What have our current lot of small forwards done to be ahead of him?? Owies has shown the most for me, but really he is averaging 8 possessions a game and 1.1 goals which is hardly screaming out pick me.. Honey & Durdin have shown glimpses but are a long way from locking in a spot..

Most teams, even the successful ones throw in a 1st gamer round 1 and it becomes their spot to lose, i would be happy for Motlop to be given first crack.

My 7th spot went to Tyler Durdin ... 6th to fisher .. because the club needs to have a really good look at him this year to see if he is in actual fact an AFL player ..

Cuningham is Best 22 when fit.

Is he?

His best games are electric. His worst are not good enough.

Obviously there have been injury and continuity issues, but he might be one of those players where you are waiting for it all to click. But it never does.

He's dangerous up forward and has brilliant patches as a mid. But he is a specialist in neither role and can get lost on a HFF.

I hope he recovers from his knee injury and carves out a best 22 niche for himself. But he is no more than fringe player to me (for now).

Can we expect 2 from group of owies honey fish Motlop Fogarty and durdin to feature in rd1?

Absolutely. I would expect 3.

Wouldn't surprise me if he lines up in the pocket round 1, yet I could also see a scenario where he doesn't debut until a bit later, like Durdin.

As you said, small forwards can often play early, and it's going to come down to a combination of his form, the form of our other smalls, and also the structure Voss settles with (ie how many smalls are playing).

Wouldn't surprise me either. If he has an extremely good preseason and impresses then he is a chance. I think Durdin and Honey are sure things, they will be there, the rest will be competing pretty fiercely.

I don't think he needs to kick bags to get a game either. Small forward role isn't really about that so much as it's going to be about his work rate, physicality, ability with repeat efforts which will translate into pressure. If he does that then the ball winning and goal kicking will follow and he will be in the side but it might take a bit of time to get there. In saying that he is a talented young player with a well developed body.

Cuner's is another that needs to decide if he wants an AFL future.

Are there any Perth based fans that can report on how Motlop played at senior level in the WAFL?? This is generally a good indication of how quickly they will be able to adapt into the senior side, if he only played Colts then he might need longer to develop before he is ready..

Not Perth based but watched 2 full replays of WAFL seniors, where he looked comfortable at the level and impacted well. Of course a lower standard

From what I have seen, think he will play early and wouldn't surprise if does a Kysaiah Pickett, but not concerned if he spends a season at VFL level

Confidence
Cuners 🔒 if fit. Too much talent and class.

Completely agree the lad has talent. I wonder about his mental toughness and ability to (please don't laugh now) learn a game plan. He looks so lost a lot of the time.

He, for me, is an instinct player and when it comes time to read an oncoming or out going play on the field he gets lost in space ...

I assume you mean Corey..

Cunners was best 22 prior to his injury as one of our midfield group, but since then we have acquired Cerra and seen Dow come on and Kennedy show something so he DC now needs to earn his spot back in the side

Will probably help him learn the game having a midfield coach that is not John Barker or Brent Stanton

Time will tell, I think a few may (or at the very least appeared) to suffer from the same thing ... I am still filthy at our stoppage setups for the last 2 years ...

And yes I meant Corey lol .. it was a play off fight club :)

Looks like a race to the final spot for Motlop, Gov, Cunners, Durdin and Owies.

Loving the sweet Honey love.
It looks like it will be Cunners - his lead is not much but pretty hard to dislodge.

I don't totally agree with the consensus 22, but I can live with it.
We are gonna have some lively debates in the team selection - each week.

Hopefully, we have some luck with injuries and the debate can be more around - which fringe player is best for our structure and give us a better chance for a win against a given team - horses for course :grinning:

I haven't had a close look, but we should have 16-18 locks and 4-6 fringe players.
The good news is that our bottom 4-6 (fringe players) will be much better quality than those that we have in 2021 - due to this pre-season changes, injury recoveries and natural growth :D

Final bounds in 2022 - bring it on!

I saw him play in the finals against Claremont and Subiaco and whilst he didn’t rack up a heap of possessions he was able to get into good spots and generally looked dangerous close to goal, although he did butcher a possession in the Claremont game with a lack of composure that cost them a certain goal.
Part of me hopes that Owies and Durdin should be good enough to keep him out at this early stage of his career, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he played early in the season and I definitely think he has a higher ceiling than both of them.

Forwards definitely the hardest to select ..
McKay, Curnow, Martin locks

Silvagni or McGovern? Not both

Honey, Durdin, Cuningham, Motlop, Fisher, Owies, Fogarty for the remaining three spots. Queries on all of them.

No resting ruckman. That’s a good thing imo.

I assume you did not watch any footy in 2021 if Silvagni is not a lock.

I think most of our forwards have looked lost the last few years (might help with better midfield delivery from Cerra and even Hewitt feeding Walsh/Martin who are part of the chain rather than starting it)

if the key forwards (targets) don’t know where it’s going, not much hope for the small forwards

I watched every game. Some of them twice.

I have Silvagni in my starting 18 based upon his form last year but he hasn’t proved to be consistent enough - largely due to injury - to be considered a lock.

Look at it this way. If we play two rucks would you be happy with this forward line?
Pittonet McKay Fisher/Honey/Owies
Silvagni Curnow Martin
Looks unbalanced in my view - something might have to give.
