Assuming Tom and JOM are not injured I don't understand why they're not playing. Surely a full on warm up against good opposition would benefit their preparation. Are they not walk up starters? Can they flick the switch when the real stuff starts? Well at least we get a glimpse of the future midfield tmrw.

No Tom or Jom.
Let's see how the new-look midfield goes.

The Midfield is interesting..

I am going to say Worpel,Wingard are automatics.
I would say Duke is close to the above and reading between the lines in his interview, I think S.mitchell is very keen to Have C.Mac skillset in that mix rd1!
Looking like Finn,Phillips,Shiels,Ward,Long,Morrison are battling it out for 1 or 2 spots.

I wonder if we'll get an explanation for Mitchell and O'Meara missing or if it's literally just to get a better idea of who will partner them come round 1.
my pure speculation, it might be a combination of giving young blokes one last chance to claim a spot, while also getting Tom and JOM cherry ripe by giving them this week off, and then a couple of quarters next week for Box Hill.

3 Qtrs of a low intensity praccy match, and a few intra clubs.....no reason not to be cherry ripe for Round 1.

I'm sure the fitness staff know what they're doing about kms in the legs. I like the idea of giving the kids a chance to claim a Rd 1 spot, and also an eye into our mids without these 2

Yeah. Omeara usually good off a light preparation and Mitchell generally just performs every time he goes out there. I hope the challenge is put to the rest of the players to stand up in their absence and bring the physicality missing last week.

Hawthorn has named a squad of 26 players to take on Richmond in Devonport on Saturday in the AAMI Community Series.
Match preview: Hawks take on Tigers in Tassie
The clash, which kicks off at 1.10pm, will see Chad Wingard and Luke Breust make their first appearances for year, having missed last week’s outing against Collingwood.
Meanwhile, Tom Mitchell and Jaeger O'Meara will be managed and will not play tomorrow.
Head of Football Rob McCartney said that O'Meara had minor hamstring tightness out of the match against Collingwood, while Mitchell, who has had an uninterrupted pre-season, is being rested in readiness for Round 1.
"Given this is an AAMI Series match, we have decided to take no risks, with our sights firmly set on facing North Melbourne in Round 1," McCartney said.

Just watch him carve it.
What exactly were people expecting from Phillips? I think he's unfairly judged - he was never a superstar at Collingwood either - by the end of his tenure there he was playing VFL. He seems to thrive when the team is rolling.

You mention some different players all vying for 1-2 spots (it's 2).

It's likely 2 mids roles.

You get 3 on field + 2 wings, 2 on bench and wings/hb for us usually can play both Morrison for example.

Morrison is picked pretty easily.

I'd have

Reeves locked as the ruck with Jaeger, Titch and Worps locked in as mids, not exactly locked starters, it could be Titch/Worp/Wingers we don't know but those 3 will play, Wingers will play but wont count towards the "mid spot" as he can play forward and likely spends a fair bit on a flank and fwd.

You get CMac or Ward on a wing also, both can play it and likely will.

You get 2 mid bench spots, could be Newc and Jaeger with ward and cmac on field or whatever, Wingers starts or gets named as a mid for example and you have a half forward spot likely open (basically just to be named there and rotation) which could be any one of the mids.

Finn is close but just misses out and one of Howe or Shiels probably get the 23rd spot (If not Finn)

With Phillips likely one of the EMG.
---
Mitchell, Worpel, Jaeger.
Wingard, Ward, CMac
Morrison, Newc.

From who you have named.
Makes it easier with Day/Imps out and even Bramble now to fit in Cmac and Ward.

He’s a bit of a workhorse. Just keeps rolling.

I reckon he’ll be ok as a starting mid, as he’s generally pretty clean in the contest.

Audition time!

Can DGB give the coaches enough confidence to let him take Frost's spot? Frost can also push his case with little run available for round 1. Can both cover for Hartigan entirely?

Josh Morris' papers close to stamped (unless he's injured)

Newk, Ward, Mac, Phillips, Shiels, Nash, Finn, Long. Which ones get to round out the midfield with Worps, Tom and Jom?

Reeves or Lynch?

Can Jeka push Kosi?

Can Brocky make the case for another specialist forward instead of a rotating midfielder with Breust, Wingard, Moore and Gunston all available?

Plenty to watch for, even if the line might be about 39.5 with those teams.

I'm keen to see (IF Jeka plays) if he can push out Kossie, he has what we need and all the strengths for a perfect CHF.

Nash, Shiels, Wingard, Morrison, Worpel, Newcombe, Phillips, Maginness, Macdonald, Long, Ward = 11 midfielders for Hawthorn

Ross, Cotchin, McIntosh, Edwards, Baker, Prestia, Martin, Ralphsmith = 8~ mids for Richmond (I imagine there's a heap more that'll rotate through)

I wonder if we'll actually have enough rotations to get time into our mids?

Richmond seems to be a pretty close to full strength side and I have no clue how close to full strength ours is if I'm honest- which is quite exciting.

Big test for a young midfield. I would say Mitch and O'Meara are midfield locks, everyone else is fighting for the remaining spots.

Hope Jeka gets a good crack, nothing better than having key forwards fighting for spots.
