Nah

You can manufacture a forward line of any size and shape, you can't manufacture KPDs

Can win flags with merely role player KPDs. Not that we need to with Weitering, but it has been done on the odd occasion.

WBD did it with Hamling and Roberts, somehow, albeit an outlier.

If you want, you can play a forward line with no key position forwards and adjust your movement forward to suit a smaller forward line.
And you can do the same with a smaller defense and running a heavier zone and intercept system with more midfield flood. Both are more difficult to pull off.

You can manufacture whatever.

Every week a 'shorter' team beats the 'taller' one. It's not as outlandish as being made out (not by you).

Completely different era, no 666, stand rule, which has sped up the game, allowing more open forward lines

Dogs have struggled since, due to their undersized defense

That’s not manufacturing a KPF. That’s adjusting your game plan, and as you said, playing a forward line with no KPF.

The same could be said for defensive tactics like playing a loose man and zoning.

I should highlight that neither scenario is ideal, and I’d obviously much rather have healthy KP players at both ends, but game plans have to be adjusted or ‘manufactured’ based on the cattle that’s available.

Absolutely, much more difficult as a defensive unit, unless you are happy with Caleb Daniel lining up on McKay
I'm very happy with Caleb Daniel on McKay. I'm not happy trying to play a backline with no key defenders.
There a reason one part of ground is considered offence and the other defence.
Defence you want to deal with all sizes but forward line is up to us how we do our own movement.
I'm surprised a few people think playing small down back would ever be a choice on purpose...
We need key defenders. Non-negotiable if you want to be a good footy side.

Pies won while playing a taller defensive unit compared to our forward line

Although we did beat the Swans and GWS

At the pointy end, better to have genuine KPDs
That's not at all how the pies won that game. They won that game because we kicked it religiously to their half backs. The intercept mark numbers were massive. I.e mobility and leap. The mid sized types. Not the out right talls.

We didn't adjust to Moore and Co double teaming Curnow and couldn't bring the ball to ground. It was that simple... The defensive unit was fine and found a way despite losing Weits.

Completely agree

Exactly. Forward line is your choice and other team have to adjust how to deal with it.
Defence is called defence for a reason so you do not want to be found too short if opposing side plays two to four talls up there that you will struggle to stop marking if you not have key defenders in place.

You mean they outmarked us due to being taller defensively, while we were undersized once Weits went down?

Three of them play in a seven man defence. Williams and Kemp also to be considered.

If all were fit Doc could push to a wing if required. Kemp up forward. Would be a great problem to have but unfortunately there will always be injuries

AA form @ HBF Sam Docherty? Don’t be changing what’s working. Versatility is nice but Vossy has said players will play where they believe they’re best suited & he doesn’t seem to be deviating from that.

We played poor footy for most of the game... i think Weiters going down threw us off massively.

Ridiculous stuff nitpicking between who is our MOST valuable player.

We have 5 champions in our team. In alphabetical order, Charles, Cripps, McKay, Walsh and Weitering.

If all 5 play, we won't be losing many games going forward. If 4 are playing, we still won't be losing many.

We have a deep bench to fill the remaining 17 spots in the 22. But if those 5 play, and 1 of our rucks, good luck to the oppo.

All 26 and under too.

And when Charlie managed to mark it on the wing he had no other talls to kick it to. Charlie really stepped up in Harry's absence, but Harry has been sorely missed.

Ahoy guys, always good for banter on the main boards so hoping it's ok to pop in.

I don't think it is as foregone a conclusion that many (professionals and amateurs) opinions predict. Carlton with a few key soldiers down and Essendon needing to prove a point is the perfect storm for an upset on the cards.

I expect Carlton to win, far to much firepower for Essendon to contain, however it would not surprise if Essendon pulled there finger out, especially with the 150 year celebration on for us.

Well to explain my lens….I wasn’t coming from the angle of trying to rank them. I was coming from a perspective that I remain very very confident of our immediate term prospects because of the direct and indirect (knock on) impact of Harry returning.

I should point out how carlton went on our 150th anniversary but I blanked it from memory
