Being captain means all sorts of committments away from the track. Coterie groups, media interviews, TV appearances, etc.. Who needs that when you've just done a round of chemo?
Also the extra team meetings, leadership meetings, meetings with coaches etc.

Exactly why people should cool their heels about younger players like Weitering or Walsh becoming captain. Leadership is a journey and your capabilities and comfort in each element takes time to develop - even for natural leaders.

There should never be an age limit for when people are ready to lead, Voss was 21, Cotchin 23.

Agree there shouldn’t be an age limit - but there are everyday examples where developing leaders fail by being pushed into a role before they are ready.

You could even argue Cotchin got the captaincy to early. His form as a player dropped off significantly in the years following his appointment and his leadership was heavily criticised. In his late 20s he matured as a leader and is now considered one of the best captains in the league but that wasn't always the case.

I'm in no rush to make Walsh in particular captain too early. I think the potential cons outweigh the pros. Give Cripps a couple more years.

was walsh a junior captain anyone know?

captain of the Geelong Falcons in the TAC Cup, captain of Vic Country in the Under-18 National Championships, captain of the NAB AFL Academy squad, captain of the TAC Cup Team of The Year and captain of the under-18 All Australian team

Oh also captain of the 22 and under AFL team ;)

Nah has no experience at all.

I've mostly been the most technically skilled in my team/office throughout my career. I'm also very good with people.

As a result, I've been promoted quickly at a few workplaces. Problem is that I suck at admin/ management and I've struggled with leadership positions. Endless meetings, project management, time management, implementation. Puke.

I've gotten better with age (but still not a strength) and I have eventually carved out a niche as the white collar version of a vice-captain.

Just my $0.02 on the fact that the best footballer is not necessarily the best captain and that age is definitely a factor - even for natural-born leaders.

Similar age. So no matter what age, 20 or 30, when it's the right time
Unfortunately Jack got crucified by the club because they went too early. Co captain as a #2 draft pick after 2 seasons where he was top 5 in their b& f both years. Clearly there is no comparison with Walsh as a player but there are salutary lessons to be learned none the less.

Cripps as sole skipper and Sam & Jacob as the captains of vice for mine.

It used to also be a reward more often than not for consistent dedication and effort over a decent chunk of years. And like it or not a lot of older blokes dont listen to some young kid captain no matter how many supercoach points he gets.

I don’t know about you guys, but if anyone should be appointed captain rather than Cripps then it should (bit of a left field option) big harry. He’s got a lot of presence about him, he doesn’t get in trouble and he’s put in so much work to get himself to where he is. I feel like he’s still underrated as a player and a leader but when you really take a deep dive he’s the one that gets the entire club going.

Nodeal from me. H is too quiet to be captain imo. I think we need someone that is already in leadership group and someone that is vocal and not shy to bark out instructions.
