Honestly not heard a peep about this.

I'd be very cautious - Richmond didn't know until Christmas wether Martin wanted to play this year or not.

That kidney damage took a lot out of Dusty - I think he lost 10 - 12kg or something?

It's a pass from me - at 31 it would be hard to imagine he would be coming up for anything other than a last payday.

At $800,000 PA (minimum) - well, I'd be topping up Rowell, Anderson and The Bears contracts before spending it on Dustin Martin tbh.

Rowell, Ando and The Bear will win us a flag. I don't know if Dusty on a huge deal for 2 years would.

Thoughts guys?
I think Dusty could provide that 'X' factor up forward we've been missing since losing Rankine but he's incredibly injury prone and may not play more than 10 games next year.

I am open minded.
Think he is only contracted for next year.
Has been playing pretty well this year.
Would bring a lot to the club for a year or two, not just playing and experience. Seems to be a great teammate, just quiet.
Do we want some more prime time games and general media attention? He would bring some for sure. Tigers vs Suns on Channel 7 at the MCG in prime time early in the season? Lock it in. How much is that worth to our young players? They have to play in some bigger games at some point.

And we are most likely trading our first pick this year b/c of the 3 academy kids. The better they play and look, the less likely we will want any more youngsters on the list and the more likely it will be traded.
As we found with Bowes, a high pick is worth a fair chunk of salary cap plus some later picks back for points.
Suspect the higher our pick the more salary another club would pay for 1 year.

If we can't entice a younger gun to come that we would need to use that pick for, not the worst idea to use it on Dusty + salary cap.

I think dustys off field actions get more recognition than they probably should. He hasn't done a whole lot more wrong than a heap of other players but gets more media attention than the average player would. He's still playing good footy and I think would be very very handy. He's a guy who takes a lot of pride in his performance and don't think coming up and just taking the final pay day suits his style. It could be a way for Richmond to get back in the draft if they were willing to pay majority of his 1.2 mill. Think our time to enter that window is very close and maybe a player like dusty is the difference maker. A great player to add eyes on the suns, my 5 year old daughter doesn't know too many afl players but she sure knows who dusty is.

You’d be a bit suspicious if he was really 100% invested. But if he gave the indication that he was, I’d be ok with it for a number of the reasons given above.

As long as tigers paid a fair chunk of money and we didn’t give up the farm.

We will probably be looking to trade our first rounder anyway given the academy situation.

If we can’t get a good younger player (ie Gresham) then I’m ok for giving it for dusty as long as we get picks back from the tigers for points.

Give up
Pick 8
Pick 50

Receive
Martin
Pick 23
For instance

Wouldn’t say it’s a good trade on paper, but has the potential to change dynamic on a number of levels.

Also had the potential to crash and burn.

It's a tough one, caro is saying 100 percent Hardwick will be at the suns next year, however she has a history of getting these wrong, clarko was going to be at the suns and bombers last year according to her.

On Martin, age wise he could be cooked in a year or two, however the profile it would give the club and the bums on seats might outweigh the potential risks, as it helps build the club on and off field in the short term.

Next year is fine if the tigers split the bill, but the year or two after, how much could be justified to pay him with a young and talented list? In saying that, I'd approach the AFL to cough up promotion coin to help out, but dusty doesn't really like the promoting side of things.

It might also be the new challenge that he needs. I think if Hardwick ends up at gold coast, dusty will too, but I don't see Hardwick ending up at the suns anyway.

Topping up with players like Martin when we arent actually a finals team yet is a bad decision. Look at Carlton, brought in Williams and McLovin on big money to help them contend and its hamstrung them financially and they aren't any better than they where before. Too dangerous.

Agreed, madness to go for a player like Dusty.

IF and its a big IF this is genuine it's Richmond wanting the Suns's 1st rounder.

Depends what other trades we do, can see us trading out the likes of Moyle who probably want to play seniors, he would bring in a decent return.
Definitely don't trade Moyle. Thought his games he got this year proved he isn't ready for senior games. Will be good long term but he most certainly isn't ready yet.

Richmond pay $800k-1mil of his $1.2mil contract they can have our 2nd rounder (30s) will get swallowed up anyways

That's what I was thinking. Surely one year of Dusty isn't worth sacrificing one of Walter, Rogers or Read!
Because we can tap into next year's 1st and the picks we'll get back for Flanders, Sharp, etc.

We'll be able to afford to trade out this year's first and still keep the trio.

The Bulldogs did the same a few years ago and Traded out their first round pick to Collingwood for Treloar and was still able to match a bid at pick 1 for Jamara.

Yeah there's lots of ways to accumulate points, at absolute worst scenario you can go into point deficit for next year.
On dusty he is 1 of only 3 players to average 20+ disposals and 1+ goal this season and that's in a struggling team. He is still going very well and seems his body is holding up well. Should be some fun in trade period anyway.

Ludicrous idea. He’s contracted and maturing slowly for life after Witts.
We don’t need to do anything with him but let him develop for another 12-months.

He’ll be worth even more next year if still not getting game and thinks he’s ready for a #1 ruck gig somewhere.

still playing midfield and looks good. i've watched him 80% of the season as i own him in fantasy

If Richmond are paying most of it, he'll be a clear upgrade on Rosas/Oea/Berry types, he'll get the best medium defender (starcevich types) will benefit the rest of our forward line.

7:22 ^ still got it.

I remember we were linked with Isaac Smith and he went to geelong won a flag and norm and still playing great footy at age 34, dusty missed 10 games before 2021, has only missed 1 game this season because of rest. Would be top 5 in their b&f

Only keen if we pay max $500k of his $1.2mil wage but, i reckon we get 2-3 years out of him in the forward line.

I can get on board with it. He is a triple norm smith medallist. He might only have 2-3 years left but he's right in our window. Prefer a past his prime Dusty to a prime Gresham.

He has to want to come and want to play on for a few years. Tigers would have to pay a major proportion of his salary. Could end up being our Hawks version of Stuart Dew even in a few years.

If our first Rd pick is going to get swallowed up with a bid on Jed Walters then we will need to do something with that pick.

Amazing! I know a few onlookers were predicting some or all of our three academy standouts would drop away this year but it looks like they're doing the opposite. Three matched bids inside the top 15 picks would be a phenomenal effort for everyone involved in our academy pathway. With this, I think we can say goodbye to any kind of concessions the AFL has gifted us that can't be justified. I believe it's really just the list size now so we'll have to reduce that but I think they'll allow us to keep access to Darwin players as long as we continue to play home games there.

List size really doesn't matter. We would have to probably sign VFL only players like Lions do. I am pretty sure I read somewhere that our extended list size stay the same at least until the end of 2024.
