Game Day 2023 AFL Draft - The Late Male Edition

Did he really slide much though? Probably should have gone around pick 13 or 14, slid to 21. A bit of a slide but not massive. I do remember on that night most clubs had Erasmus ahead of Johnson for example and had wanganeen milera Hobbs and the likes around that range too just ahead of Johnson.
I recall Johnson being ranked very similar to Chapman the year before who went at 14. Actually Nathan O Driscoll was a little bit of a slider, some expected him to go around 20 but he went at 27.

For me good examples of draft sliders include the following in recent years:

2020 - Jack Carroll, ranked about 15 to 18 range, slid to pick 41
2015 - Harley Balic, ranked around pick 15, slid to 37
2017 - Charlie Constable picked at 36 having been regarded as a first rounder by most draft rankings
Valente from memory was rated about 18-20, late first round but fell to 32. Moderate slide I suppose.

There was the tall ruckman that went to Port - Sam Hayes. He was right up there and then was lucky to be drafted.

I think a ‘slide’ needs to be minimum 10+ places.

Yes, when predicted to be inside top 20 the margin should be lower. Johnson does fit category of slider… but I don’t think massively, but then we’re just asking how long is a piece of rope.

Regardless, my initial comment is maintained. I don’t recall many ‘sliders’ that then go BANG.

Hawks were massively into Johnson, they were really tossing up whether to go him with their pick 7

So the Dees took our first rounder and got Windsor (who?) and Tholstrup their own first. Then they were done. No more picks.
Is Tholstrup ready-to-go backup for Clayton Oliver?

Melbourne
Pick 7: Caleb Windsor (Eastern Ranges)
Pick 13: Koltyn Tholstrup (Subiaco)

Apparently Windsor is a 'speedy winger'.

Who will we take in the Rookie draft?
Not so sure it will be Sanchez.
Walls has historically plucked guys from total obscurity.
Read somewhere that we are looking at Xavier Walsh and Odin Jones for a rookie spot. Both tall forwards.

There is some vision of Walsh on online. Typical sort of tall rangy kid .. will need a bit of development.

Know squat about Jones

TLDR

Simpson picked as a forward who will go into the midfield, loves his kicking off both feet, wanted talent in the forward half

Murphy would've gone first round if the draft was after the carnival MVP for Vic M in the champs, sees alot of similarities to Moose, size, dimensions, running profile.

Delean kicked 54 goals this year, mercurial, good overhead mark, kicks goals in all sorts of ways

We will add another player in the rookie draft (as I expected, it seems we will hold RD#23 for a SSP pick, unless the article is just worded wrong)

Young slid from an expected pick 3 but Serong wasn't a slider. Most had him outside the top 10 and it looked like we reached for him at the time and most around here had no idea why. We all know now though.
Serong was 3rd on Twomey's September form guide. I think a lot of draft opinions rated him above Jackson, McAsey, and Ash that year. Once it became clear that Melbourne, Adelaide and GWS were keen on those players people adjusted their rankings.

Yep that's a good article. It looks like we'll add a rookie tomorrow and leave one spot unfilled to allow us to add a player along with Sharp via the SSP rules.

See my post above laying out our list spots

I reckon we are a chance at either holding pick 23 for a SSP/MSD or if we take 23 then we put Kuek on the LTI for MSD

We determined that 3 teams have put rookies on the LTI in the past year so it can be done, (Seedsman, Culley, forgot the last)

Back onto the 23, I reckon its much more likely that we hold it for an SSP, let a couple players train on to try and get the spot, the only risk that in the 10 or so picks we miss out on that player (or maybe someone else offers them an SSP spot) Do have to remember that we went in 1 player down last year (used on Stanley in the MSD), so that is also a possibility.
I agree. Think we’ll select one rookie at pick 5, pass on second pick, select Sharp as SSP on 27/11 and then get a couple of guys down for training over the summer.

Your point is valid one. These recruiters watch a lot of games and vision. Sliders slide for a reason. This draft seems a bit wacky with all the academy picks and a few of the experts mentioned that their U15/U16 years (2020/2021) ruined by COVID so that has had impact.

Let’s hope Ollie Murphy is more like slider Brennan Cox AA determined to be top 25-30 in most drafts selected at 41.

He only this season moved from Ruck/KPF to KPD and won an MVP award in the process.

Don’t think Luker Kentfield was drafted?
Looked good underage, slid out of draft calculations, another we should trial for a train on spot.
Interviewed by 5 clubs, had interest, probably a big of a tweezer size - similar to Josh Treacy and Georgiades…

I’m glad we held onto our future firsts, it was the responsible thing to do. Gives us so many options for next year. Logan or some high end kids. I’ve got a feeling port will take a dive.
Agreed. What’s our 2024 draft hand look like now (assuming it was based on this year’s ladder)?

Sounds like by your criteria you don't have many sliders for us anyway. But your criteria is flawed I think. I'd say the number of picks is not that relevant and just as likely an indication of an evenly ranked section of a draft. A slider is a player who slips out of one tier to a lower tier. That's it, and it could be a matter of just a few picks early in a draft (Young, Green), or it could be a dozen or more later in the draft (Walters).

I still remember a Mark Duffield article claiming we were interested with pick 5 (The Cerra pick) for Hayes. Then to see him slide to nearly 50 on draft night, I knew somebody had their Intel wrong.

Until it is time for us to get Mundy and Pav JR

I concur, whilst certain athletic traits are desirable in a footballer they don't paint the whole picture.
I like that we took football players who had knocks on their athletic profiles. Walls steps up again and completely ignores combine testing results.
