Game Day 2023 AFL Draft - The Late Male Edition

Ok, I’ll put it another way.

We have often found gems with late picks.

Off the top of my head I can’t recall a ‘slider’ that became a gem.

Happy to have anyone we’ve picked up in the last 10 years as to evidence of a slider turned solid. At a pinch Johnson, but I don’t think he ‘slid’ heaps. Plus he’s still establishing himself.

Like others have mentioned Balic and Valente ‘slid’ and didn’t do anything.
Eh? Sonny Walters.

He was talked about as a top ten pick and went through to the second round, that's genuine slider.

Not like Adam Goodes at the ground ball, but slider still.

Yeah he slid, but I mean about 15 blokes would be talked about as top 10 and we had 2 picks, so naturally the talk would be there. He fell to 21. Slider? Yeah.
Is he any good? I mean unknown but tracking ok.

I’m happy to hear about any slider picked up by any team that has actually become better than where the pick suggested.

Im not adverse to taking Sam van Rooyen as a back up forward tomorrow.
Does anybody have any knocks on him?
From what Ive seen he has the skills to kick goals but needs to work on his fitness etc.

Yeah Walters was definitely a slider. Jack Darling, and I'm pretty sure Luke Parker were also sliders back in the day. There will be loads others too.

If Josh Simpson qualifies, Johnson absolutely does. Could argue Young and Serong were sliders too.

Clohesy at 5 tomorrow will do it for me

Then Sharp as an SSP

Would like to put Kuek on the LTI and trial another couple of SSP players too
We have two picks in the actual Rookie draft not just pick 5.

Sharp will be via SSP on 27/11/2023 as an injury replacement for Corbett.

We can hold one of the two picks back so we can have another SSP.

We won’t be placing Kuek onto LTI. He will be back playing around May/June - and seems to be tracking along quite well in his recovery. Plus there was a conversation about this and whether moving Corbett to Rookie and then LTI from Rookie list. I think we determined can’t do SSP with rookie LTI.

There is the example of Jai Culley as MSD injury replacement. He was playing regular AFL in season.

See my post above laying out our list spots

I reckon we are a chance at either holding pick 23 for a SSP/MSD or if we take 23 then we put Kuek on the LTI for MSD

We determined that 3 teams have put rookies on the LTI in the past year so it can be done, (Seedsman, Culley, forgot the last)

Back onto the 23, I reckon its much more likely that we hold it for an SSP, let a couple players train on to try and get the spot, the only risk that in the 10 or so picks we miss out on that player (or maybe someone else offers them an SSP spot) Do have to remember that we went in 1 player down last year (used on Stanley in the MSD), so that is also a possibility.

Cox was AA and pick 20 in Twomey's late phantom. We picked him at 41. Fairly similar in that regard to Murphy.

I wouldn't call Simpson or Delean sliders. They went about where they were expected.

Young slid from an expected pick 3 but Serong wasn't a slider. Most had him outside the top 10 and it looked like we reached for him at the time and most around here had no idea why. We all know now though.

Have to agree. Last year was very Meh.
Taking 2 rucks when we had Darcy and Dogga already really killed last years mood

Then we took Wagner in the main draft when he could've just been a DFA or SSP

Then we also seemingly went early on Emmett, it really was a strange one last year

Think the draft is actually gonna turn out alright (Emmett and Wagner look nice and I really like Davies), was just a mix n match of random things going on

Yeah that's true, but Cobbler is hedging by claiming Johnson didn't slide. I mean, come on.
Did he really slide much though? Probably should have gone around pick 13 or 14, slid to 21. A bit of a slide but not massive. I do remember on that night most clubs had Erasmus ahead of Johnson for example and had wanganeen milera Hobbs and the likes around that range too just ahead of Johnson.
I recall Johnson being ranked very similar to Chapman the year before who went at 14. Actually Nathan O Driscoll was a little bit of a slider, some expected him to go around 20 but he went at 27.

For me good examples of draft sliders include the following in recent years:

2020 - Jack Carroll, ranked about 15 to 18 range, slid to pick 41
2015 - Harley Balic, ranked around pick 15, slid to 37
2017 - Charlie Constable picked at 36 having been regarded as a first rounder by most draft rankings
Valente from memory was rated about 18-20, late first round but fell to 32. Moderate slide I suppose.

Young slid from an expected pick 3 but Serong wasn't a slider. Most had him outside the top 10 and it looked like we reached for him at the time and most around here had no idea why. We all know now though.
Young definitely a slider and at the top of the draft it doesn't take a massive shift to be a slider. Pavlich notionally a slider, albeit one we manufactured.

In the first round a slip of half a dozen spots ia definitely a slider.

Tom Green was the big slider in that draft. Went at 10 and should have been pick 1. What a Phenomenal player he is. Stupidly we had two changes to make the giants pay pick 7 or 8 for him that year but we were too nice. Supposedly it was to “maintain future positive relations” 🤔

It didn’t exactly do us any good when they said here’s junk pick 53 - take it or leave it, for Jesse Hogan a year later, before allowing Jackson Hately to walk to Adelaide in the PSD a few days later for nothing, instead of accepting pick 40 for him from Adelaide which we would have gladly taken.
They wouldn’t budge on giving us more than 53 for hogan but then were happy to piss pick 40 down the drain a day later to make a point.
