Must be something in the water here today, but I'm having some mad ideas.

Tom Trbojevic aka Tommy Turbo is a former Academy player who plies his trade in Leeeeg at the Coastal Filth aka Manly. He was rated at an extremely high level by the Academy for his skills, IQ and physicality.

He turns 27 in October and is completing a double degree at Uni. He is 194cm and a super smart powerhouse.

Would he be open to switching codes?

The AFL would love it. He'd get a massive contract, some of which would be off salary cap book as a move code player.

He'd attract enormous public and media interest.
He's got a great run and jump and catches the ball well above his head. He also plays fullback, the most aerobic of all league positions. At 194cm and around 100kg could be the solution to our perceived key position issue..........🤔🤔

By the way are you sure your water does not have a frothy head on it?

Have only just knocked off my first glass of jungle juice. Makes me succinct and tractable to herd mentality. For the rest of the evening I will be my usual peaceable self.

I agree 100%.
It is what it is …

Personally, I think our best move is to create a pipeline of top AFL players through the academy, create a culture that keeps them at the club and then fight to the death to stop any Victorian play to take our academy away.

The academy is our one advantage - let’s make it work for us.
The way things are, our Academy is not even an "advantage". It is an equaliser.

I have not tried to get accommodation in Australia for about 6 months. But even then I found it impossible not just the price but the way landlords and property managers kept shifting the goal posts. Go for a 2 BR Unit @ $350/week. Make the application. Get a call saying you have been shortlisted. How much is your bid? I thought I was entering a Blind Auction. The other advice was don't offer anything less than $400/week. That was in Adelaide, not Sydney. Not sure how under those circumstances, where rents for a family home, 2-3 BR, in the areas needed to be close enough to be able to get to training are about $1,600/week.

An AFL player on $500,000/year will pay 10% to management, so that leaves $450,000, the tax rate on that is 41%. There are endorsements if the player has a profile. The take home pay would be about $200,000/year. About you average middle management salary. Rent @ $1,000/week = $4,000 x 12 = $48,000/year. That is before you even think about a car, schools for the kids, food, cafes. The tax rate probably gets cut by their management putting into place things like Salary Sacrificing. Most ordinary people could not afford what they can I know but still 30% more expensive than in Melbourne to live in Sydney. The only reason a player would come is for a premiership
I think they need a better accountant If a player on 500 000 ends up with 200 000 take home, and I reckon middle management roles would be about that figure gross. Not to be a smart a.. but if someone on that much struggles we might as well close the doors.
I might be wrong but most searches show a difference of about 10 to 15 percent difference in rent of Melbourne to Sydney. I know it's a hard sell but we keep a reasonable amount of players on our list from drafting age.
I'm probably arguing against points I've made about trying to retain players but I think it may turn a little now that Buddy has retired.

The way things are, our Academy is not even an "advantage". It is an equaliser.
It's merely and attempt at an equaliser at this stage. Hopefully in 10 to 20 years it may start reaching that status. But by then it'll be scrapped because the playing field will be getting a little to 'level' for Victorian teams' liking.

I’m a bit biased because I watched his fascinating tussles with Logan in the WAFL - but I’d be really excited if we got DGB.

He just had so many positive attributes - and skill doesn’t disappear.

Right age, in a position we need, we would have picked him in the draft (if Logan didn’t fall into our lap) …. it all just makes so much sense.

In fact, DGB would excite me more than any of the other names bandied about thus far (except Naughton).

A Stephens / DGB trade feels like a win-win.
Win for us don't know about win for them. Would be stoked.

Agree

Call me crazy, but most people buy a house because they want to you know live in it. Capital gains are nice if you are retiring and downsizing but until then they are meaningless.

In the meantime, a young player (not likely thinking too hard about retirement) can buy a house in Adelaide outright after laying five years, or have a $1m debt in Sydney.

I know where I would be playing if I was just as happy to live in Adelaide as Sydney.
So let's just accept the fact that we will not have a single player choose to come to our club for the next 5 years unless we offer them $1M.

Back in 2009 we recruited Josh Kennedy and Ben McGlynn who struggled to get consistent game time in a formidable Hawthorn squad. Shane Mumford also couldn't cement a position in a Geelong team at the peak of their powers. I don't watch many games outside of the Swans, so are there any standout players from the top teams we could potentially be looking at who can't get much time in their senior team?

James Jordon?

GWS did well to identify Toby Bedford as being in this cohort and entice him to Sydney

If the AFL decided to make it too hard to actually access players via our academy, I'd suggest all the northern states just completely do away with them and let all the talented and physically gifted kids play rugby. The draft pool then diminishes and we will have to take Victorian kids away from them.

I am really dubious about this. Bloke has a heap of talent but there are behavioural issues and he comes from the ultimate loser culture at lolNorf.

During his penance he worked as a Cleaner for Mickey Os business. Maybe they formed some sort of relationship and there is hope for the bloke.

Has the same manager as JHF who does enjoy reaming Norf. On second last year of a $700k pa contract. Maybe they are after $900k for 4 years from Norf or an alternate bidder.

He'd undeniably help our team IF fit and committed.

Would only consider if there were safeguards, inc mentoring from Mickey O and steps to get his off field life together. Latter could include part time study, connecting to culture, volunteering etc.

Mentoring from Mickey O and Goodsey is something no other team can offer

JHF manager is Ben Willliams who also manages Errol, Logan and Hayden…so not like Kinnear hasn’t had the chance to shoot the shit with him over stuff like this lately

We will probably find the NGA academies bidding will be brought into line the Northern Academy drafting. This is because and remember this for further discussion on the main board - that teams with NGA advised it wasn't economically worth it for them to have NGAs if they cant pick them before pick 40.
NGA is a wank anyway. Victorian teams have the vast majority of AFL underage players to choose from in the first place, with no go home factor. Why should they have access to these kids simply because they have 1% of aboriginal/overseas heritage anyway. Why should they be treated any differently. It was all set up just to pacify the likes of Maguire.

Hawthorn has been the most ruthless club when it comes to jettisoning players.

But they do seem to get it right these days. Certainly no JPK clangers that I can recall in recent years.

But I still believe we have real interest in DGB, so let’s just wait & see.

They let Isaac Smith walk. He still had a bit in the tank.

He’s on $1.2m pa at Sea Eagles and can’t get on the park due to hamstring issues …good luck making that work

So now bottom ten have been settled, gonna have a look at draft. Assuming North get the FA compo but not Sanders.

Round 1:
1. WCE: Reid
2. GC: Walter - NM Bid
3. NM: Curtin
4. NM: Mckercher
5. HAW: Duursma
6. Melb: Sanders
7. GC: Read - GWS Bid
8. GWS: O'Sullivan
9. Gee: Caddy
10. WB: Croft - Ess bid
11.Ess: Wilmot
12.Crows: Murphy
13.GC: Rogers - Swans Bid
14. Swans: Edwards - Ruck
15. HAW: McCabe- GWS Bid
16. GWS: Hardeman
17. StK: Archer Reid
18. Car: Demattia
19. Melb: Archie Reid
20. NM: Windsor
21. WB: Lorenz
22. Coll: Green
23. WCE: Sanchez
24. ADE: Moir
25. Fre: Leake
26. Syd: Tholstrup - Med Utility
27. Ade: Freijah
28. Melb: Delean
29. Rich: Morris
30. Bris: Johnston
31. Ess: Smith
32. SYD: Hall - mid

Looking at our position, Edwards makes sense but is a long term ruck prospect. Tholstrup has grunt and can be thrown where ever and Hall is best available at that point IMO. However, reckon we will only take three this draft which would include Cleary

If we cannot shift up in this draft, would not be surprised if trade out of first rounder or trade for a player.

Edit: NM fans pointed out missed Watson. Likely to be at Melb pick, Sanders to GWS and Gee to bid on Read.

If we use our 1st round pick on a ruckman I will throw my poo at my neighbor.

You do you 🤣

But honestly, the playing pool is full of flankers which would be the only position that could debut early for the swans realistically.

Prefer to grab O'Sullivan or Murphy but both likely gone by our pick

Someone raised a point earlier that many of the current batch of players are too polite and lack a competitive mongrel - I tend to agree

Also I was a fan of Kaelan B last year and was unhappy he did not get rookied by us

Still open to the idea of him getting rookied - especially if Owen is gone

Adelaide KB - James Bolgase seems an interesting KB depth option especially if Melican goes

My sincere hope is that we can do a deal with GC for their first which sees us draft O'Sullivan and trade in Moyes. It will cost but I don't mind. After O'Sullivan we might have a second round pick (big might) from a trade out or two to use before Cleary. Tholstrup would be OK.
Those three would probably be enough if we rookie May and Cabor.

Really want us to draft up too but no idea how we will bet a Melb or WB crack (WB to get ahead of croft bid).

Do not really have a favourite player in this draft. Like Sanders and O'Sullivan but unlikely to be there

It is really tough to predict who we will draft at our ranges.

Probably reach again. For someone not even in the projected top 50 😅

Leake seems an interesting option.

Good size and can seem to play various positions from back to forward and mid

Could be available with hawks first pick

I think Murphy with our first
Leake with second

If Cleary does not happen with our second then do for Moir, Tholstup or the speedy mid - DeMantia (I think that’s his name) and then Cleary

May rookie

Or we could trade our first 3 picks for a GC first and then pick Sanders

With later pick try to get a KPD

The top 10 of this draft is very very good
