When lists are lodged, the number of players on the list must not exceed maximum list sizes. At the same time, clubs must provide the AFL with estimates of total player payments in the current and following year, which must prove the club is not and will not exceed the salary cap. (AFL Rules 5.3, 6.1, 6.8, 7.2, 7.9)

The club know their salary cap situation better than we do. If we're offering $800k, we've got room to pay him $800k.

The fear mongering that we're going to lose players because we're paying a good player a good amount of money is silly.
If it were a Buddy Deal then it may have been a problem. But it isn't. The other thing is that when the APA finally agree to a deal then the cap will rise, by a considerable amount and this will help. I still think the Soft Cap needs to rise by an extra $500,000 even after the $500,000 rise.

I am thinking the club may have though. He has spent more time out than in and when in after injury was incapable of rucking, which is why we traded him. I think they are probably slowly losing patience.

To be fair when fit and not suspended he played. Was never playing in the back end after a long layoff coupled with Hickey being ahead. Big year next season for Ladhams though 100%. He has all the tools to be a very good ruck let’s see it.

isn't it "porous" because port's big defenders are mostly interceptors?
maybe i don't pay enough attention to them ...
Two interceptors. But Aliir has had to play as a lock down lately with McKenzie out. They are undersized or young with the experienced players out.

Gettable says Melican to stay
Stephens to go.

Watch on Soldo to Swans

Soldo a very interesting one. The games I saw him play to end the year are about as effective as I've seen him play at AFL level. Athletic, strong, and confident with the ability to play forward. Would be a good, relatively affordable option.

From today's "Gettable"

Looking ahead to next year, Logan's name came up amongst others as forwards coming OOC next year

- Lewis Melican likely to STAY ON with a new deal (view of rival clubs) - Cal T

- Dylan Stephens "in the box seat" to go to North - Cal T

- Keep an eye on Ivan Soldo (some discussion about some link to us) - Riley B

Sidenote:
Bulldogs have had a contract in front of Jordon Sweet most of the year (like Dyl has)

Esava will be at Port - Cal T
Riley is full of it. If we wanted another ordinary ruck we could at least trade a guy under 27. I am not sure he will fit in at Swans.

I would offer the Dees Ladhams as steak knives in a trade for Grundy.

Am really more confident in MacAndrew. Needs more muscle but is miles ahead as a ruckman.

Dont mind the idea of a Soldo or Sweet type but am a big fan of Moyle.
Stretch's improvement from last season to this was massive. He went from pretty much looking lost on an oval field to making a reasonably solid debut in the AFL. He was always good on the tap but this year his general play and basic skills are much better. He also seems to have a good temperament and character (in contrast to his ruck colleague). Needs a bit more bulk and strength, improve his tank and basic footy skills and I reckon he will be an asset.

Only problem is he is a shocking kick. He can miss from less than 10 metres out and field kicking is not very good. You would need to have runners going past him at all times. I am not certain he will fit our style and demographic. He can kick a long goal though. He averages:
21.05 HO
2.3 Marks
8.3 Disposals
0.40 goals
3.02 Tackles
none of those stats are giving me a nice warm, fuzzy feeling

I reckon he is going to be a very good ruck. His tap work is super already.

I don't really value a ruckman's kicking skills tbh. Hickey, Mumford were hardly good kicks but effective as rucks in good sides of ours.

I don't think we'd be recruiting a star like Grundy, but Soldo is a bustling, athletic and powerful guy who could be more than useful at relatively affordable rate.

Has helped Port Adelaide retain players, it’s about setting a culture.

Travis Boak as the prime example when it could have been easier for him to go to Geelong, he stayed.

It wouldn’t be a stretch to say they are now somewhat of a destination club, we can’t say the same for ourselves and have lost quality players over the last decade. All Australians, a Brownlow medalist and current club captains.

It’s ok, everyone is entitled to their opinion, I have stated mine and all I am calling out is as a club we need to get tougher and more creative with our negotiations with trades.

For whatever reason a majority of you are happy with the status quo, which is more bewildering for mine.

Happy to leave it at that.
Post Nick Stevens and supposedly setting a culture of retention (even though I've already explained why it's not comparable to Dawson), Port have lost:

Schofield - a very handy player (best 22), literally to the PSD the next year to Freo and he had to bypass a bunch of other clubs to get there

Carr (the next year also)
Pickett
Burgoyne
Cornes
Brogan
Pearce
Chaplin
<bit of a break>
Wingard
Ryder
Howard

As well as other fringe types. Despite Stephens high pick, he is just that at the moment. He should be worth a 2nd rounder, but given the PSD option we should settle for a 3rd if that's the only option, because it would achieve nothing unless the Eagles said they were interested.

Whilst true compare the Wingard deal to what we got for Dawson, Burgoyne they got a kings ransom for too (he was worth it but that was a win-win)

So with the likely recruiting of McKay, Melican staying and Gould at best staying on as a forward, leaves us pretty stacked for key defenders in:

McKay, McCartin, Rampe, Francis, Melican, Edwards, Arnold

Can't see why we would draft O'Sullivan unless we let Edwards or Arnold go. If we decided we don't want another key defender and we manage to move our first into the 5-10 range, how about "the wizard", 170cm 67kg small forward, Nick Watson. Him and Papley would be an awesome combo especially when combined with our talls.

So all of our big name trades fall through. We're resigned to keeping Melican as our KPD (not that I have an issue with that - other than perhaps his durability) and erre looking at Soldo as a backup given Grundy has chosen Port.

Not the worst outcome.
I think I prefer a developing ruck like Sweet. I am sure we can draft a Key defender. In the meantime we have McCartin, Francis, Arnold & Melican. Lewie was pretty good earlier in the season. I liked what he was doing.

We drafted a small forward last year in Konstanty, there is no need for another one. If we trade up and I'm on the fence, it better be for a specific target that's worth it. Durrsma seems the one that sticks out.

Doggies have lacked a bit of outside run this year. A trade involving Sweet and Stephens could suit all parties.
