Anyone here have us down as getting Taylor Adams a year ago? He wasnt considered a realistic target.

Anyway, we're not going to agree. I hope we go our hardest for the best players possible.

Pretty sure I had a post where I said "Mark my words, Taylor Adams will be a Swan next year" but now I can't find it... Stupid
'search' function.

Just in a phantom draft.

Nabbed ZZ with our first - bit of a reach but has a huge scope for improvement. Late B'day, athletic traits, came to game late and showed huge improvement throughout colts.

Others considered were Charlie Edwards, Tholstrup and Hardeman.

I agree with you with regards to never say never. However Adans kinda fell into our lap by approaching us due to getting less midfield time, plus having lived in Sydney, I assume was familiar with the natural advantages of the city compared with Melbourne.

Something similarlt drastic would have to happen to make mcluggage pack his bags (had to say it🤣) and leave bne for any club, let alone us.

Yeah. Liked your post.
A little more on ZZ.
Everything you said plus:

I can see this boy as a KPF.
He's 17 when he starts training. Start him out with the forwards. His two biggest areas to learn are likely to be kicking and body work. His athleticism is already great for his age and size.
Extras in kicking, leading and blocking.
If the preseason goes well start him as the third tall in VFL (assuming Amartey/Buller and Ladhams are the first two). Persevere for at least half the season. He will learn heaps no matter what. He hasn't played against men has he DQ?
If this works out we have another athletic young KPF. If not we shift him down back to further his education. At the end of the year we have decisions to make about which KPDs to recontract.

He was their best player this year. Runs his guts out every week. His recruitment was nowhere near their biggest mistake, if it was one at all.
Their mistake wasn't recruiting Kelly, who's a gun. It was recruiting Kelly at the wrong time. They failed to identify the state of their team/list and in doing so cost themselves chances to rebuild in the early stages of the draft sooner. Instead they ended up with a bunch of youngsters that didn't amount to anything - Harry Edwards, Xavier O'Neill, Luke Foley, Ben Johnson, a who's who of never-wases - and the few promising youngsters they do have now - Bailey Williams, Elijah Hewett, Reuben Ginbey - are now developing in a rabble with little to no senior experience around them.

They really misjudged where their list was at. Pure wishful thinking. Doubled down instead of biting the bullet. Wasted Kelly.

Pretty much yeah. And if they nailed the lesser draft selections they had then the pain of that is probably lessened by at least having a crop of young talent to rival say ours. But they didn't nail them, so they really have nothing.

In fairness I know of a few current Swans players who West Coast recruiters were very keen on in their draft year, so their recruiters obviously aren't idiots. But it doesn't count for much if you fail to get them on your list and instead draft duds.

ZZ has only played colts this year - no senior WAFL appearances.

But he's at the bottom end of the age cohort and not playing seniors is certainly no surprise.

If the argument is that we should be pursuing McCluggage because ... you never know ....

Then you could say the same about nearly every player in the league. Maybe Christian Petracca is tired of the culture at Melbourne, you never know.

There are realistic, unlikely, and fantasy trade targets and I think McCluggage would be firmly in the fantasy basket.

Is Petracca a free agent? I wasn't aware. I've identified a player that is a free agent and would be a significant upgrade on our list. I haven't plucked a player out of nowhere and said go get him.

Here he comes....

If you do what Kinnear did and make sure everyone knows we're on the hunt you give yourself a chance. Pretty sure that's how we got Adams. Once he knew Grundy was coming he said "why not?". The stars aligned.
Also pretty sure that's why Barrass(or his agent) approached us before bottling it.
Sure, you get used for leverage. So?

Didn't think he had. That said, he looks pretty hard for a 17 year old, but those few years can make a heck of a difference for some kids. No doubt it will show quickly. I reckon he'll end up hard as a cat's head 😺 just like Sheldrick, only way taller.
As you can tell, I'm hoping.
