It does look like the most favourable draw we've had for some years. So many changes at the Saints with the new season approaching, right now it seems impossible to predict how it'll unfold. I remember reading somewhere a while ago that with every new season there's at least two teams, often three, that fall out of the eight from year to year. Thinking about that with this year's finalists, you'd think the most likely teams to be replaced in the eight might be maybe the dogs and tigers, possibly Freo? Wouldn't be too surprised to see Melbourne take a little dip either, or the pies.

I'd expect Carlton to push into the eight, Port too, and think the Suns might well have their best season yet. Hopefully we're in the mix there somewhere, a couple of early wins could set us up nicely.

I'm strangely confident we beat quite a few of the the 50/50 sides, especially at Marvel against Carlton, Richmond and WB. Hell, aren't we actually the last team to beat Geelong (at Marvel)?

I can see a clear bottom 4 in WC, Ess, Nth and Haw. Crom, GWS, PA, GC in the next 4 from the bottom. Gets pretty even after that. Saints, Dogs, Blues and Rich inn the middle. Coll, Freo, Cats, Dees, Swans and Lions top 6. I expect Lions and Dees to be the best 2.

We actually got a FAIR Fixture for a change based on our ladder position, after year's of copping fixtures harder than our ladder position.
Our 2020 fixture was actually fantastic from memory (definitely very good, with lots of games scheduled for Marvel), but then that all went out the window with Covid, and everyone just played each other once.

Then they gave us the hardest fixture in the comp two years running!

St Kilda Saints

Thursday Nights: 1
Friday Nights: 2
Marquee Match-Ups: Ross vs Fremantle in rd 1 (Marvel Stadium), 150th.
Who You Play Twice: Gold Coast, Carlton, North Melbourne, Richmond, Hawthorn, Brisbane.
When Is Your Bye?: round 12
Defining Stretch: Ross Lyon’s Saints might need to be 13-6 after round 20 to play finals — because August games against Carlton, Richmond, Geelong and Brisbane (Gabba) is a scarier finish than The Blair Witch Project. The mood for the 150th birthday party against Essendon at the MCG in round 3 will be set by what happens in a tough opening fortnight against finalists Freo and the Dogs. Contrast the vibe at 2-0 or 0-2.
Expected Finish: 8th-12th

Carlton, Geelong, Richmond and Brisbane, yeah good teams that we beat except Brisbane and poor kicking.
Why will they improve and we won't?

I think we might take a while to adjust to Lyon so think we probably have to come home strong. I expect a bit of a wobbly start and improve our systems and cohesion as we play. If we can nab a couple of early games again similar opposition it will make finals a lot more likely.

I don’t know about that .. not saying we won’t take a while but it won’t be as radical a change in style as when we went from Thomas to Lyon … there’s been some good examples of teams adjusting straight away .. Geelong with Scott port with Hinkley Carlton with voss pies with McRae

Obviously examples the other way too but I think it could go either way !

Success and playing good, attractive footy gets rewarded..we’re yet to earn that!
Essendon, no finals win since 2004, no top 4 since 2002, so they have earned their Anzac Day and Dreamtime game every single year?
Nothing to do with earnt.

I like that the last 4 games are difficult but not impossible. Much easier playing the Cats at the start of the season than the end, and Brisbane at the Gabba never a cakewalk. Tigers and Blues should be biggies too.

In each of the four, St Kilda would be odds on to lose. But equally all very winnable with the right application. Great way to end the season, seeing how far we have to go or head into finals full of confidence.

Hawks and north are surely going to stay winnable. And Gold Coast and Richmond are as good as any other side in the next group of sides. At least Richmond means both games are in Melbourne. Gold Coast the one that could go from easy to maybe not so easy.

I expect North to improve a bit but still a work in progress. Hawks will struggle. They have lost a lot of quality and haven't got quality youth coming in behind it.
