A lot of work for someone and its not as fun playing off a spreadsheet, i think we can find something better. TheBench looks like it could be goodDo we play this next season as purely a point scoring league and hope they re-introduce categories from the following season? Or we maintain the league in the AFL fantasy platform, use if for fixturing etc.. but maintain our own separate scoring in a google sheet or something like that with the actual category scoring, ladders etc.. and see what they bring us in 2024. Thoughts?
If everyone is keen to give this a go, I'll spot the $10 and try and get things setup. Can be a rolling cost that the previous season's Premier can cover Heavy is the head that wears the crown...Frequently Asked Questions
##General Questions **How much does it cost to play TheBench?** There are two versions of TheBench. 1. There are FREE competitions with defau...thebench.com.au
worth the read as an alternative
i know I would definitely get $10 value from this, but would add up if people are in like 4-5 leagues ect
Apparently it doesn’t cover categories, that isn’t one of the customisationsIf everyone is keen to give this a go, I'll spot the $10 and try and get things setup. Can be a rolling cost that the previous season's Premier can cover Heavy is the head that wears the crown...
There’s now a survey on the site to possibly keep category leagues alive for 2023
Hi guys!
Long time no talk.
Glad to see you guys are looking for a way to push through.
Just wanted to give you an update from a little way behind the curtain.
I've been working with a guy named Danny Page from dannybetsnba on a bunch of NBA statistical data stuff.
As soon as UF went down I jumped at the potential chance to develop a replacement to help fill that gap in the market. Even if it looked like s**t, I just wanted it to be functionally the same. Part of this meant I to reach out to the AFL for an API to use for live data updates.
NO deal, which was the expected response. However, UF then almost immediately updated their site with the survey about a paid service.
The belief now is that the AFL deal went through too close to the start of the season for them to implement category scoring on their site/app. So the plan was to ride out 2023 and then relaunch categories in 2024.
Why they didnt keep UF in place for one more year, I don't know, but now that they are putting a $ value on it I think that they are going to spend the cash to roll out categories for THIS season and try to recoup the rush job costs from the fans.
Either way, I hope you boys stick with it because I'm 99% certain it'll only be a single season blip before categories are back with a vengeance next year!
Good luck, have fun!
Cheers

The way LWP worded it made me think AFL fantasy adopt categories and charge us for it, where as they might have made it free next year. One we pay I don’t see them stopping unless SC offers it freeI think they will still use the old UF site for this season and merge everything next season.
I am in three (!) spread sheet dynasty leagues, and they are way more fun than UF in my opinion, and that is even without category scoring!A lot of work for someone and its not as fun playing off a spreadsheet, i think we can find something better. TheBench looks like it could be good

lol damn thats a lot of leagues my man. I hear what you're saying and mightve agreed at one stage but these days i just really like being able to check live scoring during games and what not which seems more challenging via spreadsheet to know the score of the game with 5 mins left etc.I am in three (!) spread sheet dynasty leagues, and they are way more fun than UF in my opinion, and that is even without category scoring!
Thanks for the info mate. Understandable in some regards, but good to know.Reading between the lines -
AFL Fantasy made the UF guys an offer too good to refuse. People have been screaming for an app for years and they never developed it, presumably because the project just got too big for the team they had. Don't forget; Ultimate Footy started as a passion project for fun. It wasn't ever planned that it was going to get as big as it did and legitimately compete with DreamTeam and SuperCoach. If the AFL are gonna buy you out, then you're probably selling pretty comfortably.
The vast majority of leagues on UF are still point based. So, from a numbers POV, it makes sense to just merge things and roll on in 2023 with points only. The AFL Fantasy crew could then work on the outlay and data feeds for category scoring and bring it back in 2024.
What they didn't take into account is that the majority of leagues that were paying for the upgrades and who were really attached to UF were the category users. It was their point of difference. The raw numbers might not have been there but our small majority ******* LOVE this style of game.
My personal cash comp has been going since the 2011 season and when the announcement first went up we had 3 people instantly say they were out. It's category or nothing.
Because of the backlash the AFL/UF are going to try and keep catagories alive for 2023, at a cost.
It makes a heap of sense to just run the UF site for another season and give people time to prepare for the migration in 2024. Why they didn't do that initially ($$$$) is beyond me. Just take the hit, keep everyone happy, and move forward. I wouldn't be able to guess the numbers but I assume we will still get a category game in 2023 now but there will be a fee.
TL;DR - UF probably lives on in 2023 but then we move to AFLF-Cat
