I know someone already mentioned it but Fox Footy draft "expert" Mick Ablett is clearly a bit of a dullard.

In what world is Dodoro a "genius" for giving up pick 31 in order to move up one spot and secure Caddy.

Here's a thought Mick.

Geelong would have known Essendon had an interest in Caddy, hell we all did given it's been well speculated in the media and wouldn't have done the deal if they were intent on securing him for themselves.

Effectively Dodoro gave up pick 31 when he could have done nothing and taken Caddy at the selection after Geelong.

I hate to say it but if anyone is smart here it was the Geelong recruiting team.

Honestly some on here bag Hine despite 4 GF's and 2 flags in 13 years.

Dodoro hasn't put together a list capable of winning a final since 2004.

What a genius.

If you’re short for money? Don’t worry, the AFL will prop you up.

If you can’t recruit? Don’t worry, the AFL will prop you up.

If you can’t recruit, suck and have no money? Don’t worry, the AFL will prop you up.

If your entire game plan sucks? Don’t worry, the AFL will prop you up.

Why win flags when the AFL can prop you up? We’re all about equality here!
AFL here - we actually employ 23 "strategic propping managers" - it's a full time and quite demanding role given our objective's moving forward

There's still a number of decent KPP's left on the board including Murphy, Reid, Morris, Edwards, ZZ and Schoenmaker, all of whom were either touted or had suitors in the first round of the draft.

IMO we're in a similar position to last night where we can basically wait and see which one slips through to us.

Ollie Murphy: I'm a fan but apparently his draft testing was poor (I don't have access to this) which is why he is sliding.
Archer Reid: Inconsistant, Brisbane linked to him
Logan Morris: Already linked to us and makes sense.
Mitch Edwards: Rumours of non football issues.
Arie Schoenmaker: Rumours of non football issues.
Zane Zakostelsky: Athlete rather than a footballer.

Others to look out for -
Archie Roberts: Rebounding half back
Cooper Simpson: Underated midfielder with pace. Has been injured
Koen Sanchez: Forawrd / Mid with pace

The 2024 draft is mid heavy so I would go tall with Morris / Reid / Schoenmaker.

I think some people are under the impression that SSP is only to fill rookie spots
Not true. Can be used to fill any list vacancy. Rookie or Senior list
I'll take your word on it but can you provide any media article for this confidence?

I've had a bit of a look and they're always talked about as rookie additions.

Perhaps lazy media wording.
I'm certainly under the impression that anyone picked up as an SSP goes onto the rookie list only, and don't know of any examples of those recruits going straight on to a primary list. I would think the primary list would need to be finalised after tomorrow's pre-season draft, with a minimum of 36 players, and that we may end up elevating another rookie (along with Johnson and Markov), if we don't take two more selections tonight.

I to would appreciate the confirmation because I don’t think an SSP player has been added to the senior list as of yet. The other factor is that we have rookie list spots available (I count 3) and I find it odd that we’d fill one or two of those tomorrow whilst keeping a senior list spot open. Pending confirmation of course, but my guess is one of our rookies will be upgraded unless Wingard is turned around as an PSD selection and the SSP is only for rookie spots.

With Markov and Johnson being upgraded we have two rookie spots available. Our rookies are:

Begg, Dean, Steene, Carmichael.

It’s a little ambiguous, but to me this reads that SSP selections are rookies only:

AFL club eligibility for the SSP and MSRD

A club is eligible to select a Rookie Player during the SSP or MSRD as follows:

  • If a club has a rookie list spot available
  • If a player suffers a year-ending injury or retires, the player can be placed on the Inactive List and be replaced by an SSP or Mid-Season Draft Rookie Player.

^ I was just about to post that as well, in almost exactly the same words (though I would have put them in alphabetical order)!!

Would be good if we can use our next selection to draft a kid who has a written draft profile.
Hopefully not an obscure player recommended by an ex Collingwood player coaching somewhere.

It’s that pest Markov never formally being on the rookie list that tripped me up! I suppose 2 rookie spots and 1 senior list spots is doable from an SSP perspective, but the rules do seem pretty straightforward to me that SSP is rookies only. It’ll come out in the wash I guess 🤷‍♂️

It's silly to call Dodoro a genius, but equally silly to criticize him for trading up to get our guy. It was impossible for Essendon to know for certain that Geelong were not going to take Caddy, or predict whether another team would trade up. We obviously had Caddy as a priority, and he was the best list fit for us in our draft range. We played it safe, and lost what is currently pick 36 by doing so. I'm fine with that.

This article makes specific mention to SSP being rookies so I'm baffled that we'd only take two picks tonight. We currently have 34 seniors with DeMattia taken last night and the minimum is 36.

If we only draft one tonight, we'll upgrade a rookie. However, 3 rookie spots to fill from SSP and MSD seems excessive, but if they think the odds are better with blokes who've been further screened by training with us, it's the way to go - I suppose?

There looks to be some interesting options via SSP, but I’ll be honest none of it is moving the dial for me as a missed opportunity.

Can someone explain the bidding on Swans linked player last night vs just picking DeMattia?

Especially if DeMattia is one we wanted at the time.

Has to do with taking out some other clubs pins in the process?

As time goes by I think we’ll see clubs increasingly use the SSP system because the access you get across a training block is reflecting an increased hit rate v the speculation of the rookie draft or late national draft picks. Three rookie slots for six train on players over three live rookie picks every day of the week please and thank you.

I think you're on the money with some of your notes on the remaining KPP. Edwards and ZZ are probably the most speculative of the lot of them, though Zakostelsky being a KPD means developing him should be an easier task than Edwards as a ruck/KPF.

Ironic that Reid has been linked to Brisbane, given he gives Hipwood vibes to me - talented, but relies on others making him look better, or having a very favorable match up to exploit.

I like Murphy and Morris the most of the group - what I've seen of their games/talents will translate the easiest at the top level so they would be my two, though granted they do have their knocks (mostly around athletic profile - but again this can be improved).

It’s super easy. We rated Cleary ahead of Demattia and for a time last night we were a chance to land Cleary depending on the timing of other FS and academy bids.
