The Detroit Lions had a 21-20 win in Dallas over the Cowboys all but in the books. However, referee Brad Allen controversially decided that something that clearly happened did not.

Allen incorrectly ruled that left tackle Taylor Decker did not report as eligible before catching a brilliant 2-pt. conversion pass. Video evidence clearly indicates otherwise, as did postgame comments from Decker and many others.

The Lions subsequently failed on a last attempt to score the two points, eschewing chances to kick a game-tying extra point and going for the win.

Cue the outrage from pretty much everyone. And it’s warranted…

Decker was neither a) at the end of the line (WR Josh Reynolds was there - Decker was the second in line), nor was he a yard behind the line of scrimmage (he lined up next to Reynolds). Whether Decker reported to the ref as an eligible receiver or not is irrelevant in this case - he was made ineligible due to his (and Reynolds’) positioning.

If Reynolds had lined up a a yard behind the scrimmage line, and the same call was made, then the outrage would be justified. Of course, if that had happened, that distance probably would have been the difference between making the play and not.

So why did the referee not say this? Cause controversy creates clicks, that’s why.

Here’s how they lined up on the penalty play:

And here’s how they lined up for the next play - notice Reynolds is now starting a yard behind:

Surely the cowboys effort against the 49ers would be up there?
Yep, very selective use of stats to claim that as the third worst D effort of the year. Ignores the fact that the D created a pick six, and at the end of the first half (despite being on field for over 22 minutes of the half) hadn't given up a TD.

I'm not saying the Eagles D was anything other than abysmal today, but no way is that the third worst D performance across the league this year. Hell I can name two Eagles games alone where our D played even worse than today.

Reynolds was lined up off the line of scrimmage - he checked with the line judge twice and got confirmation (unlike Kadarius Toney a few weeks ago). The rest of your post is irrelevant

Been watching the Eagles for 25+ years and today was the worst defensive performance I've seen. Pathetic from start to finish. Historic numbers too, the most allowed 1st downs in a game is 40, we weren't far off lol.

Think our coaches have lost the locker room, one and done this year for us unfortunately.

There's literally nothing selective about Success Rate as a metric. Its purely a count of "Did you get a certain % of the yards required for the next 1st down based on what the current down was?"

You can argue about how well it reflects the actual performance, but calling it selective just indicates you don't understand what you are attempting to criticise

The way he used the stats is what I am pointing out - also you are assuming he is quoting the "Success Rate" stat as reported by the NFL, he isn't - he's selectively leaving out 4 teams and 3 weeks of the year. If he is going to quote a stat in that sort of comment, he needs to include all games played across every week by every team.

Tepper's losing his marbles A11dAtP0w3R

Love that the fan he threw the drink on is straight away trying to climb up through the window into the corporate box. While Tepper runs away...

In the first play Reynolds is not covering the LT. It looks that way, kinda, but hes actually a yard back from the center, the ball, his helmet behind the shoulders of the LT. Thats part of the trick of the design, to appear covering the LT but actually not By rule, a total of seven players including two eligible receivers have to be ON or close NEAR the LOS. They have seven players serving that 7 line of scrimmage rule. The WR far to the right is on the LOS as part of the 7, and the slot is as far behind the RT as Reynolds is the LT.

So the four players considered behind the LOS are Reynolds, that slot on the right, the QB and the RB. As Reynolds is not covering the LT it means the LT is eligible, whereas the RT is ineligible being covered by the WR to the far right.

Also the trip the refs called on Dallas was actually by a Lions player.

The NFL will just hope people forget, like how the Lions were f**ked over with bad calls in Seattle early in the season costing them a win, and stop again week 18 when the refs dragged the Seahawks over the line against the Rams killing the Lions playoff hopes.

Is this also a selective stat?
