I don’t mind the players coming in…

Boyd with more leg speed makes sense.

Kemp versus marchbank I’m not sure on. Kemp is quicker and can leap/mark.
Marchbank comes across a little less nervous compared to kemp although both made some crucial errors last week.

I do like the way Boyd plays but I am a little concerned that he hasn’t played in a high intensity match and hence maybe we should have kept kemp in the side.

Lions board going off at the upcoming umpires saying they’ll definitely be wanting an all Victorian GF…..just ridiculous.

I have a Lions supporting mate who tells me it is all rigged and that the AFL have already decided who will win (not the Lions, in his view). I said that if I played along with that logic, doesn’t it mean that if Brisbane win the premiership it was just decided by the AFL? His response was that if the Lions won the flag it would dissuade him from the view that the competition is all rigged. I will leave others to make inferences on this logic.

Logic isn’t bad - Blues vs Pies GF is an AFL wet dream.

The betting agencies who are very significant sponsors might not be to happy about the shortest favorites losing thou

Some brave calls made by Vossy and the MC. But they are staying true to themselves and selecting the team that best suits the opposition.

Harry and Jack M pick themselves and make our forward line so much stronger. In hindsight we may look back and say the extra week off for Martin had him super fresh for this. I think the Boyd and Hollands selections are well warranted as they boost us in areas we were lacking. Boyd as the lockdown defender on a small/medium and Hollands as the running machine who helps all over the ground.

Must say, the topic of discussion with my carlton-obsessed mates has been our concern with Brisbane's small/medium forwards. Weiters and Marchbank are good matchups for Daniher and Hipwood. Marchbank more defensively minded than Kemp so gets the nod.

It is these small/medium forwards (Bailey, Rayner, McCarthy, Cameron, Ah Chee) who are the worrying matchups. But we now have Newman, Saad, McGovern, Boyd and Cincotta to match up which balances us out a lot better. I can see Kemp being the sub due to his versatility.

Very strong team put on the park, with the new additions adding to our run.

Bring the fight. Make it a contest. Stay in the game.

We are a massive chance if we can get this game on our terms!

Can anyone find a respected media or football person (non carlton) who is tipping us?i

I’m surprised by talk of a 45 pt Brisbane win.

If you look at Brissy’s record in the month prior to their Port final, they only just got over teams they played - including home games.

It’s not like they’ve been smashing everyone;

48 point win Port (H)

12 point win stkilda (H)
24 point win collingwood (A)
6 points win Adelaide (H)
3 points win dockers (A)
41 point loss goldy (A)
11 point win Cats (H)

This is a much closer game than most expect.

We are every chance!

Nope, the pressure we applied in those games won us the games, the bad kicking happened as a result of that. I don't understand the need to downplay our victories. If we go on to win a premiership this year it will be on the back of our efforts in the Melbourne game.
Just being a realist. We have had some luck which sometimes you do need. Luck goes both ways. All Melbourne and Sydney had to do was kick at a semi reasonable accuracy and we lose. It could have easily gone the other way. We get second and third go at it. We have to make the most of that, realise things weren't quite working and make some changes. We were outplayed by Sydney and more by Melbourne on the night, we defended for our lives and they both made mistakes. We lacked run and we have added run to the team. Now it's up to us to win this game without relying on opposition skill errors.

Yes pressure was good, but these are teams who have played in grand finals and won a grand final. I think we are overplaying the pressure part, they just made bad mistakes.

I'm tipping Brisbane wont. We will have to keep scoring shots close or in our favour. We need to be better to beat them and I think we will be.

Boyd is made for finals, as I said earlier he plays every game as if it's a final. His speed, one on one defensive ability, run carry and precise kicking is exactly what we have lacked the last two weeks.

Martin, a week off may have been what he needed anyway. He'll be fresh and he's in blistering form.

McKay is now a long way away from his knee surgery and that concussion. He'll be cherry ripe.

Hollands is another who is made for finals. Again he is the speed and endurance we need. Forget about finals being too tough for him. Finals is not about being big. It's about the intensity. You need to be able to play at a high level of intensity and to be ultra competitive. Which he is. He'll wear the physicality, he will dish out repeat efforts, he will run blokes down he will cover a lot of ground at speed and he will be good.

Our selections are really good. Docherty going forward I am warming to.

Think Cuningham or Owies makes it as the sub. When the sub comes come on, Docherty will go into the middle.

I don't know if they'd be quaking in their boots but they'll certainly be very worried about Paine missing in particular. Even if Gardiner is a decent backup.

Charlie or Harry have to put them to the sword this week.

Funny how in our biggest game in 10 years we have arguably our least injury impacted playing list.

All of a sudden there are 5-10 blokes desperately unlucky to miss out.
Not sure Pain missing is quite correct. I expect there will be pain aplenty for the Lions.

FWIW, changes to teams since first match up this year:

Honey - Martin
E Curnow - Cottrell
Young - Marchbank
Kemp - Boyd
C Durdin - Fogarty
J Silvagni - TDK

Quite a bit stronger.

For them Gunston and Payne out, Zorko in.

No doubt we are relatively stronger this time around
yep agree + plus grunt. we're a different team now and playing pretty much on our terms.

Moreover, watch the Port-Lions final (Kayo mini for example).

Port played poorly, missed shot after shot after shot - 1.5 or 1.6 in Q1, the Port backline was hobbled and slow, yet Port were still only down by 15 late in Q3 (when Brissy went bang, bang...)

Yep. Our half forwards push up really hight, cover huge ground and he's a massive part of that. Try and lose defenders by blowing them up or lose them in traffic and if we have a play where we move it quick and fast, get lose close to goal.

I like the idea of having Cottrell, Hollands and Walsh doing huge distances out there. They are going to get lose a lot. Going to blow a few of their players up and take them out of the game because going with guys like these means only running defensively.

He's been good.
yeah, great call. He certainly can read the play, just needs to be a bit patient at times and one or two body shoves away from being awesome up forward.

We've got this, I feel it in my bones. My gut has been accurate all year and I just know that our boys can do this. Big O was an issue last time but pitto and TDK will work him over. Our midfield is too deep and all are in form and fit. Cerra and Walsh to run rampant and George to nullify Neale. Sheer weight of number of entries to a full strength fwd line is going to be too much for Brissy with one of their big guys not playing.

They think this is a formality for them but we're ready and hungrier and have a shite loaf more ticker.

We can do this. Blues by 13

We won both weeks because 9.14 and 9.17 is horrendous kicking. We could have easily lost by 3-5 goals. The part of the game where we won was because the opposition made mistakes.

19 scoring shots to 26 and 18 scoring shots to 26. You would expect them to be losses. Luck dictated that they weren't
Over this scoring shots argument about Melbourne losing rather than us winning. 2 main reasons.

1. Playing better gives you better shots at goal. Remember we were kicking terribly inaccurately earlier this year? Then we started playing better, resulting in easier shots at goal and us kicking more accurately. They didn't miss sitters for the most part. Because they weren't give easy shots for goal.

2. Look at our inside 50s in the 2nd and 3rd quarter. So many easy passes were put straight in loose deefenders laps. We had poor kicks resulting in no shot on goal, they had theirs with the kick at goal. They had more scoring shots because our bad kicks were the ones directly before the Shot on goal. Both bad football, only one gets you a score and only one gets recorded for media to focus on.

Having said that, I agree with you that we needed to make changes to improveandi love what the MC have gone with.

Now that TDK is a threat forward, the Lions defence is going to struggle to contain Charlie, Harry AND TDK.

Takes a lot of heat off Charlie.

Noting Martin too, is capable of kicking a decent bag...
So it will come down to our mids winning clearances and getting the ball in quickly to give our forwards more looks.
