With Marchbank, McGovern and Plowman all with major question marks re their future at the blues, it really makes sense for Kemp to be again groomed in the backline. I expect 1 if not all the 3 above mentioned to gone at the end of 2023 with their contracts due to expire.Interesting that Terry from Blue Abroad said that Kemp isn't training with the mids this year. Training backline.

I still don't understand why we don't have a specialist goal kicking coach.

100% but can't hold onto these guys if they aren't producing and staying on the field1.Gov very important.
2.Marchy bonus if available.
3.Plowman break glass in case of emergency only.

No denying McGovern is good at it if and when he is fit. But I expect him the only maybe to survive out of himself, Plow and Marchbank. Marchbank would have to have himself one stellar year to get another contract after last year receiving just the one year. And I like Plow, but I suspect the club maybe looking beyond him with Cowan drafted and Kemp destined to be a backline set piece. If Gov’s body holds up, which the clubs now fairly confident it’s now sorted out, i think he has a mortgage on the 3rd tall backline position…
Very important piece of the puzzle down back with the skill set he possess with both how he sets us up rebounding and intercepting…

Great summary!!!Some observations from training yesterday, noting I was located at the Royal Pde end.
[*]Charlie: one word - BEAST. Couldn’t be more impressive with his will/intent out on the field. We know how good this guy is.
- JSOS: looks super fit. Pretty much led every run/sprint he took part in. He’s a real leader out on the field. Then played a key lead up role in the match sim, handballing off players running past - generating overlap and run.
- Dow: Definitely provides a point of difference and complements our midfield with his ability to break the lines. Running was a little better than in past years. Still not sure how bad he actually wants it. Feel he’s well down the list.
- LOB: Could not fault him. His running capacity is incredible, and has bulked up as other posters have mentioned. Looks like he now has belief.
- TDK: needs to stop jumping and then while in mid-air trying to work out where the ball is. He’d be much better off just watching the ball and taking less spectacular marks.
- Acres: will be the bargain of trading period. Such a solid player. He’s strong, physical and reads the play well, linking well the other players. Also beat Cripps in a number of contests.
- Holland: didn’t notice him as much as other posters but looks to be a player. Him and Binns will push each other along.
- Carrol: from my view, his skills were solid although he often looks for 20-30m passes.
- Kemp: was definitely playing defence. He was marched up against JSOS when down my end.
- C Durdin: love what he bring. Has many Boomer Harvey attributes and feel he’ll end up as a midfielder in time. Just a natural smart footballer. Definitely has bulked up.
- J Martin: still looks like a twig. Either can’t put size on or is allergic to the gym.
- Weiters: looks like a boss out there. did get a minor knock but was able to carry on
- Newman: did recognise him initially. Definitely a lot slimmer and moving well.
- Fisher: loved what I saw of him. Seems to be our link man around the midfield. Expect a big year from him.
- Lemmy: didn’t do a whole lot but seems to have goal sense. Did a few nice things to suggest that he has the ability.
- Binns: super impressed with him. Thought he out worked hollands across the session. Also linked up very well during match sim, using using his running to get a few 1-2s and really break the lines. Has more toe than I expected.
- Young: didn’t train but was BOG when it came to signing autographs. Was 1st to start and last to leave. Absolute champ.
Overall, was an impressive sessions. Seems
to be a big focus on moving the ball quickly with lots of overlap and short-sharp switching. Players like fisher, LOB, Acres, C Durdin, JSOS, Motlop will be critical for us this year.
No doubt anymore significant injuries to either of McGovern or Marchbank will most likely have their papers stamped, let’s see how they go…No denying McGovern is good at it if and when he is fit. Cowan looks like he is going to fit in nicely.
Whole generation.definitely losing the next gen..................er, not.............
He clearly has some kind of hamstring issue. He did his usual boundary line runs. Then went inside to gym. I went in to the cafe and saw through the window he was doing hamstring work with a training and then repeatedly shaking his head and pointing to his hamstring. Clearly a frustration and ongoing saga for him.
OBrein outworked Setter F last year ,better runner on the wing and ended up more effective...been a loooong spell to get OBrein to be where he needs to be to sustain a significant career seeminly on a wing....his foundations were alwayes there plus he has no doubts continued to work on his game no doubt with help and we are seeing progression...Am happy for LOB to stay on a wing,he can run out games and works well at timesSo glad to hear LOB looks comfortable and is now fitter and stronger than ever.
I wrote him off years ago.
Every great team has a gun winger. If the reports are true and he continues his improvement we’re in a good spot. Keep proving me wrong mate.

Dows progession was similar to LOB until last year,i always thought the two were of similar skills perhaps in different areas, however Dow just hasnt grasped his opportunities, even now he still seeminly doent have an AFL basal fitness compared to the others, his burst is at times Elite however disposal often sub par....
He needs a lot of work....and he needs to make up in his mind he wants to be an AFL footballer.......[the club has to help him turn that corner and not at another club where he quite possibly would excell to some extent]
Watching Heath Buck’s video it certainly appeared like Lochie is running on top of the ground. In one of those 2 minute runs he’d put a fair bit of distance on Charlie and one of them he must have got a third of a lap or more ahead of Dow who was really labouring.I think the thing O'Brien has always had going for him is he has the right set of traits for his position. He has always been an elite kick, had a massive engine and above average speed which are the most important attributes for a winger. He just needs to get his contest work to a bare minimum acceptable level, improve his execution under pressure and find a bit more of the ball.
Dows burst is a weapon, and he has good hands in close, but he can't find much of the ball (particularly outside the contest), has poor disposal and poor endurance which limits his ability to run defensively. He's also small for a pure inside mid which is probably why his contest dominance doesn't translate from VFL to AFL.
Compared to O'Brien there are larger holes in Dows game in terms of what is important for him to succeed in his position. To top it off on-ball is most often where the best players play. If you look at almost every club the competition for on-ball spots is much stiffer than wing. O'brien can probably be the 18th-24th best player on our list and get a game every week. Dow probably needs to be in the top 8-12.

It's what elevates us as a team.Really pleased to hear LOB is tracking so well. Only a young 23 with 60 games under his belt.
A reasonably healthy list and this type of player development will get us there.
