Probably not though his burst out of traffic may have been enough of a point of difference to get him a few extra years.

Cunners was pick 23 and has survived 8 years despite achieving arguably less than dow. His explosiveness is probably the reason why.
A 30 p, 3 goal, BOG game against the drug cheats guarantee’s you a contract for life in my book.

I think the days of trying to make Dow someone he’s not (gut runner) are over.

He’s a stoppage / burst player. Never will be a hard two way runner. The thing is, he doesn’t have to be. We should be playing to his strengths. If it means he can only manage 75mins then so be it.

Refer to how the Dogs use Treloar as an example. He’s surrounded by gut runners which allows Adam to play to his strengths at clearances.

At times Paddy’s shown he can be brilliantly effective at stoppage and clearances. Let him rip at this and this only.

If he can’t impact when given this license than it’s over for Paddy.
Was thinking the same.....its crazy to keep doing the same over and over
and hey he might just gain some belief/confidence........i think still some value somewhere[Dow]
too many....too many wasted high drafts am vividly seeing......
Dow possibly tries to hit the track, and did try to work on this game.....just hasnt eventuated tho

Looks like you are camping out tonight Coona, maybe we can all pitch in and get a Domino’s pizza delivered to you
Nah mate. Can’t do Wednesday, Missus working and a 6yo to get to school. Had my little drive knowing no guarantees, but had twice done similar for positive results three and four years back before the Covid lockdown and cuts. Calculated risk and “lost”. I don’t get out much with some health issues. Was a big effort, but enjoyed the outing (not as much as would have liked) many an hour driving to country race meetings in another lifetime. A hop, skip, and jump for us old country folk. Back home now 700km round trip after taking slightly scenic route on way back.

Just make sure those who can make it Wednesday share the info (and pics) please.

Edit: 10 am start, just wow. Will be cooking, has been ultra tropical of late. Today no exception.

FWIW Suns focussed on rather manic ball movement like many clubs these days. A team pretty good, L and P platers in second team, not so much. “D word” has some work to do, so to speak…

Liked that training video, was excellent, a few observations based on that...

We are practicing defensive stoppages. Why? When teams did this to us, went one on one and made it all about pressure we got beaten. Think GCS game, Collingwood how they played all year. Spoke a lot about this earlier. We need to get better at this but how we structure up forward of the ball also needs to be better when this is happening so lets hope we tidy this up as well. Are we doing that? Looks like we were, tall forwards standing with their man and on the lose man is a part of that, take out the interceptor when it's high pressure in the middle. It's a must.

Ball movement looks better. Using half forwards more. High switches up the ground, get the ball into the middle. Silvagni, Fisher, Motlop are really smart footballers who can play half forward, time their leads and get those uncontested possessions we need so we aren't bypassing the position and bombing it in. Going to be harder with real AFL pressure but the idea is there. A side note, this is why Silvagni absolutely must not play ruck and why he should be in the team. He's a good link up player at half forward and we need that. Can't ruck and play a hard running game off half forward, it's just too much. Good sides can win a lot of footy at half forward between centre and 50. Martin, Silvagni, Owies, Fisher, Motlop are all good, capable half forwards, Silvagni being a bit taller is an advantage, Fisher being very evasive is an advantage etc.

Carroll didn't look to train badly, remember he's a young guy who is developing and has played a handful of games.

Youngsters Lemmy, Binns, Cowan all look to fit in out there pretty well.

If Dow was a decent kick his confidence and his team mates confidence in him would lift his game to another level. Execution and decision making look a bit scratchy.

Sam Durding, great to have, playing on Colman medallist quality players and doing fine.

Don't mind De Koning flying for marks, going to be a way to deal with the opposition player who parks in front of him. But he needs to hold a few more and not give away frees. Marking needs to be his extra curriculum.

We look to have some quality on the outside and some good run in the team. Can see this as an area of improvement. Get Acres in there who looks good, O'Brien another level, Carroll another level, Fisher, Durdin, Motlop, Newman, Docharty, Hollands, Walsh, Cowan, Silvagni, Owies, Saad etc, guys who can run, spread, lead get on the end of it, we can be more and more damaging and smarter.

There were a lot of best 22 players sitting that session out so good to see it was still a good standard with fringe players doing good things.

Hitting up those leading half forwards and half forwards who can lead, can play smart, get separation and be there at the right time, love seeing that.

As for those missing, some guys can train more than others. It's just a fact with footy. It's why Essendon's supplement saga was a big deal as the substance allowed players to train harder and recover faster which is a big deal for a footballer. Having those who pull up sore and get injured more than others doing less on the field and more inside is fine, it's probably us figuring out what works for them.

McGovern and Marchbank will be a million times fitter this year. McGovern was covering the ground really well in his handful of games at the end of last year and Marchbank is a natural runner so not worried there. A fit Marchbank is a near key position size player who runs both ways off a half back flank if needed, he will be fine and better than he was last year. Walsh appears to be recovering well by the sound of things. Sucks for Boyd and Cottrell. Young will be fine. Kennedy I hope would be fine. Bit of a worry about Cuningham being behind still. Honey may be one of these guys who pulls up sore more than others, not sure where he is at.

He can't play forward. Has no idea about spacing, leading patterns etc. Just generally where to be when.

This come from one of the senior forwards who told me they have to keep directing him constantly, making it harder for them to perform personally.

He seems to have similar problems with playing midfield too.

At this stage I am wondering if it's just the way his brain processes spacial data or situational awareness? Maybe some sort of mental block? I say this, because there really hasn't been any sign of improvement in this area over the years.

It's not like he isn't trying. The guy busts his ass off trying to get better. He just isn't.

Is very much a see ball get ball type of player. Put him in a team where he is one of the go to mids, just get him hunting the ball and he will go well. Like in our VFL team. Not a peripheral or receiving mid at all. Isn't going to react to someone else winning it (opposition or team mate) in a way to stay in the play and contribute. In our team he's behind a lot of players in the middle, it's not a see ball get ball role really for him.

Not sure if another role has been tried such as defensive mid or defensive forward. Has defensive issues but if that's his role he may do fine. Either way those positions are all taken by pretty good players so it's tough.

Et tu gbatman?

We should have an auto translator every time someone uses the term “supplements saga” instead of “illegal performance enhancing drug scandal”

Day 1 Sunshine Coast …

So what time did they train? Today or yesterday? Not happy Jan.

Headed home after 10 with the Suns still going hard at it. So bloody hot did not contemplate a session starting later.

They arrived today Coona.

See my post above (post #941)

Did my eyes deceive me or was that Cunners roving the JW spoil in the Insta story? Surely it can’t be….
From a few twitter users Marchy is only doing Monday and Friday main trainings on an individualised program... wouldn't be surprised to see Cunners the same and has just been mostly unsighted at open trainings because of it. Marchy has missed most of them yet appears in the odd photo looking to be in the main group
