2024/2025 Gold Coast Draft & Trade Periods

Not really, live trading would of allowed us to cash it in on the night for a premium
Would have needed to trade it for a future pick to protect it until Lombard bid and then try to get back in.

It seems it will take a F1 to get an early 2nd round pick so would have to be a player we rate highly to be paying that price. Hopefully they've done a Geelong and actually scouted some of the less exposed draftees and can find value in the second half of the draft

I agree that we could probably get Rioli only for pick 6 but it could go to the last hour of trade. I don't think Tigers would pass on pick 6.

We also got picks 51, 61, 70, 76 in Rioli trade for Lombard bid. Essentially, we traded picks 6 and 44-49 for Rioli.

I don't think we could do live trade on draft night to get points for Lombard and also overs for pick 23. Too risky, IMO, need a club with picks ready. E.g., Lions also traded pick 20 during trade for points.

Yes, we could trade pick 23 before draft when picks trade window is open.

I'm just putting this here because I want to be able to look back on it in 5 years time. Being a somewhat consistent draft watcher, if I had my pick of the top 10 for this year it would be;

1. Levi Ashcroft

2. Murphy Reid

3. Jagga Smith

4. Isaac Kako

6. Taj Hotton

7. Leo Lombard

8. Tobie Travaglia

9. Cooper Hynes

10. Finn O'Sullivan

Guys i'm not as hot on that people rate very highly

  • Sam Lalor
  • Josh Smillie
  • Bo Allen

I'll have a go

1. Ashcroft
2. Armstrong
3. Lalor
4. O'Sullivan
5. Smith
6. Langford
7. Lindsay
8. Travaglia
9. Draper
10. Lombard

My favourite is Harry Armstrong - the kid has sticky hands, is accurate and can kick 60m effortlessly from a set shot. He may not get the ball much but will rack up goals at high efficiency once he develops.

Also big fan of Lindsay - classy left footer who racks it up and uses it well

Not a big fan of Smille - he's big but doesn't use his physicality as much as what you would like

Hello, how many picks will Gold Coast take?
I think Gold Coast and GWS should consider trading On draft night.
Perhaps 21,f2 for your F1,pick 40 or whatever you have after Lombard bid.

I like Lindsay the most(outside the top5) and would love to trade back in for him or Hotton

Sounds Liam Baker’esk

Hardwick type of player

Some interesting tidbits about Lombard in this article. Grew up a Richmond supporter and idolised Dusty (will they be teammates next year?). I'm sure he'll be ecstatic to be coached by the guy who he dreamt about playing for when he was younger and having Richmond guys like Rance + Grigg will only add to that.

The part about being a jiu-jitsu national champion and only playing footy "for fun" on the side just shows how important our academy is. Based on this article, if our academy didn't exist, Lombard would probably be lost to the game and would have likely followed in his father's footsteps by chasing a career in MMA. Instead he's about to become a top 10 draft pick and a potential superstar for his hometown AFL team. How good!

LOMBARD WANTS TO DO IT FOR MUM

Gold Coast Suns Academy member Leo Lombard says his mum is his “inspiration” as he eyes an AFL career which he hopes will allow him to give her a more prosperous life.

The gun midfielder was raised by a single mum on the Gold Coast.

He grew up competing in jiu-jitsu and took part in the Pan Pacific Championships in 2017, as well as winning a gold medal at the Australian Open in 2018.

Lombard had played footy “for fun” on the side, before joining the Suns Academy and quickly thriving.

“I was doing jiu-jitsu for quite a bit until I started taking footy seriously when I made it to state sides,” Lombard said.

“I just love footy more, to be honest.

“They (Suns Academy) have helped me out so much on and off field. They’ve even helped out my mum as well.”

Lombard models his game on players like Suns veteran Touk Miller and Port Adelaide star Zak Butters.

He is a tough, quick and agile midfielder or half-forward who is a fierce competitor and finished the under-18 national championships with the Allies this year as a joint winner of the Larke Medal.

“I only had the one bad game with Vic Metro, but I was super grateful for that and surprised,” Lombard said of the award.

“I just wanted to win, to be honest. I felt like if I played competitive, that we’d have a good chance of winning. When we did lose, we didn’t lose by much.”

Lombard played in the Suns’ VFL premiership as a 16-year-old last year and featured in a further eight state league games this season.

“I spent six weeks with the Suns in the pre-season, so I think that really boosted my confidence and made me back myself in for each game,” Lombard said.

The 18-year-old grew up a Richmond supporter, dazzled by Dustin Martin.

However, he is now all-in on Gold Coast and hopes to join the Suns in November’s national draft.

“I haven’t been told anything yet but it would mean the world to me,” Lombard said.

“It’d be good to stay close to my mum.

“She’s my biggest influence, to be honest. She’s been huge for me, and I look up to her. She’s my inspiration.

“I think my next goal is helping my mum out.”

Don't think Leo has ever had any interest in "following in his father's footsteps", his father has had absolutely nothing to do with him.

Considering Hector is a black belt in jiu-jitsu and parlayed those skills into a long MMA career, I would suggest that's a big part of the reason Leo did jiu-jitsu when he was younger. Jiu-jitsu isn't very popular in Australia, particularly 10+ years ago when Leo started doing it. They may not have a relationship, but that doesn't mean Hector's occupation had no influence on Leo as a youngster. Anyway, the real point of the post was that our academy likely prevented a very talented kid from pursuing a different sport. That's a win for us and the AFL.

He was just speculating. Listening to him he has nfi what happens with Rowell, but needed to create a headline.

Also mentioned Rowell extended in preseason last time.

IMO, it will a bit worry if Rowell does not re-sign during off-season.

I honestly don't have a worry in the world.

I think Rowell's agent might like to hold off a bit though, it seems to much of a given that he is staying and he might wanna give the club a scare to work the best deal.

Expect Rowell to re-sign for two more years. That will take him to free agency and maximise the amount he can make (from us and other clubs). I'm fairly sure his agent will be pushing this as well because he stands to benefit more through the free agency route.

Can you just tell us what they say about Lombard please. I can’t be bothered listening to that shite.
He thinks the earliest bid for Lombard will come at St Kilda first pick (7).

St Kilda probably will bid on Lombard at pick 7 or 8 because their president was so outspoken in his criticisms of the academies and father-son rule recently.

I think it’s almost certain they bid on Kako and Lombard. Hopefully Kako first. If Sam Marshall was 15-20 range rather than 20-25 they’d probably bid on him too
