If they weren’t tied to the club - would any of our father son or academy boys be taken in the draft?

Is Rome a chance to not be taken?
I get the feeling that Benny and Rome will be taken and we are keeping it low key.

The other two should get a look in and I think will be more related to list spots, Logan Evans type of thing

Dylan Alexander’s mock had Armstrong sliding to us, and us taking him. He’d be difficult to pass up if there and would set our key forward stocks up for a very long time.
That would be very nice but I think he's tempting for a team early who doesn't want to pick up a midfielder and he might go earlier than predicted like Aaron Cadman in his year.

They are actually on to something with Josh Dolan. Genuinely quick, good hands and uses the ball well. No problems seeing him as a pretty decent small forward. Any pick 30 plus is looking pretty good value.

29 and 36? Has that been reported somewhere?
It is implied in the suggestions we want to trade up from 13.

That would need to include at least one of them.

And I can't see any of our father sons or NGA being worth 36.

So if we want to select them then it would make some sense to use that pick elsewhere.

Barrett and Montgomery late picks.

Rome wont be taken unless we've nominated him. Usually only 10-15 SA kids get picked and he would be around 25-30 in the rankings.

The others, forget about it.

Is it just me or does Welsh look a bit overweight?

No one will ever know because feelings.

We'll get Benny Barrett as cat B. No one is main drafting him. Rome's only chance is we rookie him. I can't see any other F/S having a chance.

I wouldn't be surprised if we passed on Rome and asked he Montgomery and Francou to come and join that SANFL futures player list we can have.

No talk on bids coming on Port players in an article in the Herald Sun. They don't even expect Welsh to attract interest.

It really doesn't seem like we have much either given we haven't kept enough picks in their range or rookie spots.

It's a shame. I'd rather we cut the rookie list harder and give the FS a go there rather than keep dead wood.

The reason we need a forward/mid in the Berry mould at 13:

1. We are in the premiership window- recruit for now
2. JHF is our best clearance player- see stats below- he must play more midfield and less forward in 2025
3. That means we need a young kid who can offer something inside 50 in 2025
4. In 2024, the worst player in our team consistently was a "blue collar" small forward (McEntee, Evans, Narkle). Replace the 22nd player with class to get the biggest improvement we can

2024 Clearance Stats- Averages

As a team we were 2nd for Centre Clearance Differential, 6th for Other Stoppage Differential and 4th for Total Clearance Differential- so we are good in this area already but the following shows we could be better and have a real competitive advantage:

Horne-Francis 54% CBAs for 2.5 centre clearances per game....3.3 Other Clearances per game
Butters. 66% CBAs for 2.1 centre clearances per game....2.8 Other Clearances per game
Rozee. 62% CBAs for 1.7 centre clearances per game....2.7 Other Clearances per game
Wines. 56% CBAs for 1.9 centre clearances per game...3.0 Other Clearances per game
Drew. 56% CBAs for 1.4 centre clearances per game...2.7 Other Clearances per game

If JHF plays more midfield time, we can expect even better clearance stats. This midfield is already set for the next 5 years. Mead 2027 will do a job similar to Wines 2024/2025.

Meanwhile, only Richmond and West Coast were worse than us in Ground Ball Gets (average). I couldn't find a breakdown for I50 ground ball gets but the eyes tell me this was definitely a big problem I50. Given we played the "bomb it to Charlie/Rat" tactic most of the year, this stat is even more damning.

Turning your biggest weakness into a strength is the best way to improve.
