Still plenty of highly rated players available, including KPPs and tall midfielders, for our next two picks. Clarke is still there and I hope we can get him. A pity we couldn't have held onto our pick 50 (which has come into pick 45?) but its possible a player we wanted is still there at the end of the draft.

Win 3 flags in 4 years, bottom out 4 years later and trade out players whilst those premiership players have currency and get 8 picks in top 25, 4 in the top 11 before matching bids, in one draft.

That's how you quickly transition from a super successful era to the next generation.

Cotchin, Dusty, Rance, Riewoldt, Edwards were all top 11 or top 30 picks and they won their first flag 8 to 10 years after being drafted and came from drafts over 3 years. Their next one might not take as long.
Depressing

Drafting gerryn would just seal it for me

Using 2 high ish picks to draft players in positions (small forward / ruck) teams regularly fill via late picks / rookie.

Like the reverse of moneyball.
Ridiculous take. Greene, Pickett, Watson, Weightman, Daniels all first round picks. There are small forwards taken late, but there’s also KPFs, mids, rucks etc taken late too.

As for Gerreyn, if we pick him it will be in the mid 30s, well and truly mid-range pick territory where you start taking a punt on players

Are you a fan, Macca?

If Shanahan, Gerryn, Clarke are all on the table in six picks, who would you take?

I am yes, Clarke would be a very good pick

I dont think theres been a club whos won a flag on the back of a stack of picks in one draft so not sure why people are assuming Richmond will jump straight up there again because of this.

Geelong had 8 picks in the 2001 super draft and its drafting and trading between 1999 and 2001 was the base for their dynasty. Only had 4 in top 30.

Geelong's drafting
8 Bartel
17 Kelly from a trade with Melbourne for Bizzell
23 Charlie Gardner They received this pick for trade of Justin Murphy to Carlton. Gardnier was traded in 2007 to St K for a 6th round pick not used by Geelong
24 Steve Johnson
40 Gary Ablett - Father-Son pick
41 Henry Playfair received the pick from Melbourne, part of Bizzell trade. Traded to Sydney in 2007 for pick # 44.
55 Traded this to Melbourne for Brett Grigic
69 Mathew McCarthy
81 David Johnson

The good thing Richmond are doing, is doing this rebuild draft early, while they still have some of the senior bodies and premiership players around them, to set them on the right path. Had Richmond just meekly continued to fade out and slowly rebuild, they would've been in a far longer rebuilding cycle.

They're years away still, and probably set to finish last next year, but they'll be bouncing back to being competitive in 3-5 years, vs the 5-10 they were looking down the barrel of.
