It's not just the overuse by hand that's the problem. They keep handpassing to stationary players facing the wrong way or to vacant grass.

If you're going to play a handball game, you need to handpass with purpose. You're handpassing to a player who is clear and can go, or you are handpassing to a better position where your numbers are. What we're doing at present seems to be more the former than the latter, but it's not purposeful atm.

I can't remember the last game we played where I felt we had the greater set of finely tuned athletes...

State of the art facilities, high level training ground with plenty of access, dedicated VFLW team through the winter to prepare on their terms, and this is the result? Where is the high performance work?

We look a different body shape to our opposition, and it's showing in how hard and fast we can run, what we can run around and through.

Two ruck system is pointless if neither of them is getting serious training in forward tactics and otherwise getting out of Austin's way.

Start with a basic system that works - built off athletic and skill execution principles that suit the list - and then build out the complexity and refine the nuances at contests.

If you don't know how to do that, you're not a professional coach: get out.

It's a disappointing result, certainly. They looked the better side for most of the day. I'd argue it could've been a lot worse but for that wind; they might've played it better, but it also caused a number of easy intercepts and marks to spill loose and become contested again. I'd also be interested in the playing surface, because the last time I saw balls bouncing at right angles like that was... well, when I played on shitheaps on the Mornington Peninsula.

But there's a bit to like. Austin looks very likely, Moody's still capable of the sublime, Celine Moody is certainly up for the fight. McKay was excellent sometimes.

We look too tall. Now, I get playing to your strengths in terms of selection, but a handpassing gamestyle when you've not got legspeed is - frankly - stupid. If you're going to play handpass-receive fast moving, you need to either be skillful enough to retain possession at all times (we're not) or fast enough to get separation consistently that putting it into space has us beating them to the now loose ball (we're not this either). We should be trying to play conservative kick-mark footy, exploiting our height and carving up our opponents on the lead and overhead; it mightn't be as exciting, but it's certainly effective if done right.

I dunno. There's a bit there, but ostensibly I agree with Mondyboy when they said the AFL stuffed us and we've yet to truly crawl out just yet.

We absolutely have the talent, but if we're going to let stars like Brea and Peterson turn into powerlifters instead of mobile footballers, and evidently slack off when it comes to athletic and skills training, it's going to make for a pretty terrible brand of footy.

This gets compounded further by playing veterans who can no longer compete at the level.

Also, we're basically playing 3 rucks, but at least one has been training as a forward.

We seem to get worse every year, unlike other teams that remain competitive

We've lost a looooot of talent since the GF appearance, a lot of it to expansion clubs. What this means is that the quality we've lost has not been able to be replaced because those clubs have been able to pick the teeth out of the drafts; we lose the Hoskings twins, Bree Davey, Tayla Harris, Stevens (I'm sure others can remember more than me!).

It's a shit sandwich, and we've not really got much choice than to eat it.

Agree Geth but as a foundation club we should be better . Carlton looked good in patches out wide but those little constant handballs to danger in close and turn over. Blake acres it. FMD.

Hoskings and Stevens losses were not that big considering the availability in the draft and also through the sign & trade period.

We should have done better in the Davey & Harris trades, but the first 2 rounds of the draft remain way more important and we never do much of anything to trade up appropriately.

This is fixable within the season and beyond, we're just shitting the bed on multiple fronts.

It just doesn’t feel like we’ve improved at all. Then you look at Hawthorn who look a tonne better than last season and have done some really handy recruiting (albeit with a heap of league assistance with top draft picks).

Abbie, Mia, and Moods were solid. Need to play Duursma and Velardo IMO.

If we lose Skepper to injury, that will be another blow.

Gerogia Gee, Lucy McEvoy and of course Prespakis were huge losses too off the top of my head

We also lost Wilson, Trudgeon and Laloifi... most of our experienced backline

AFLW did shit all to help us after we had our list raided off-season after off-season.

Some of these departures were at our request... I think we saw the writing on the wall and leaned into a full rebuild

It is what is though, no use in complaining. We just have to accept where we are.
It's going to be a painful few years.

Like a few others I am frankly flabbergasted that Duursma and especially Velardo (29 game player coming into her fifth season) aren't playing given our dearth of experience. On this point Mathew Buck said in the post-match presser that they both had good pre-season campaigns and will be in contention for next week, potentially alongside new Blue Tarni Browne.

They needed to be up by at least 3 goals kicking with the wind in the first. Scored 2 early goals then almost nothing. It seems all the same since Harford left. Nothing much to look forward to. Hope there is some changes next week.

How Dal Pos gets a game ahead of anyone is baffling.
Cannot remember a single game she has influenced significantly since she arrived. And don’t give me “leadership” … surely we’ve moved on from that being the first priority for selection.
We had the wrong players and the wrong plan today.
