List Mgmt. 2024 AFLW trade and draft

McDonald ended up going at 8. Not much of a reach! There might be other reasons not to pick her. Liz made a good point above.

That’s 3 spots it’s a fair bit in this type of draft. We need class in the middle badly, even more than tall targets which everyone is focused on way too much. The 3 I wanted were Fish, Rasheed or Howley. Howley went the pick before so between the other two wasn’t fussed which one.

No doubt she's a good player. Just would have preferred McDonald so that we had at least one tall target. Love Privitelli but gee we ask an awful lot of her. I guess we'll be using tall Hamilton and Davies a lot.
Problem is LexieH plays her best in the ruck, for which she's a bit short. Her performances as a KPP are significantly more ho-hum. Giselle looked OK in the VFLW mini season, but was overtaken by Lexie in the ALFW. So Privi may be the lone marking option next season too.

Our big problem this year was turn overs coming out of defence and poor two way running such that we got burnt out the back alot. The recruitment of Fish and Pullar looks to fix this problem. Bringing in Moloney will free up Hurley and Ham to play on the outside more which again will help move the ball out of defence and also our run.

Yes we are still looking short, especially in attack but realistically, just need Lexi and Giselle to compete and bring the ball to ground, with Priv being the one to clunk them. Once it's on the deck, I'm backing Cynthia, Moy and Grunden, along with the mids, to kick plenty.

RMCentral
Amelia from the Academy is a medium forward more transition than goal scorer. Good acceleration and expected we would pick her.
Caitlin from Cats VFLW is a 185cm Ruck forward 👏👏👏
Sarah 172cm defender from Nth Adelaide had a strong SANFLW season.

I'm sure they just said Sarah was the Swans AFLW runner this last season and also a Tanya Kennedy type but more on the outside

I guess we know understand why she wasn’t prelisted. For whatever reason the Swans didn’t think she was at the level of others available.
So our only 2 academy players to get picked by the national academy have both been passed over by the club. Interesting.........

I'm joining in late and will have to catch up about our late picks and about Zippy Fish too.

I spent basically no time ever looking at Centra/Harris/Fish because I never expected them to come to us. First it appeared they were going to be top 3 picks (and Centra and Harris were); and then the pundits told us that GWS and Sydney would pass over Fish and that we were seriously considering Rasheed. So I spent some time earlier today doing a deep dive on Rasheed.

While I have some mixed feelings about Fish I can't be disappointed. She's going to be a fantastic player (widely rated the 3rd best player, although it seems that O'Hehir (the one I really wanted) jumped over her in the end) and she's a lovely, bubbly personality. She'll play from R1 next year and make us better. The mixed feelings relate to (a) she's not a tall which is what we need; and (b) I just wasn't primed to be selecting her.

Conversely, as I mentioned above, I did spend a fair bit of time google-stalking Rasheed. Her ties to Port Adelaide and to Adelaide the city really do run deep. Her grandfather, Noel, emigrated to Australia in the 60s. His cousin got him in to barracking for Port. Noel converted his wife Ibby into a Port fan. Both his children - Indi's dad, Roger, and Indi's aunt, Hitaf, formed strong ties to the club. Hitaf went on to become their General Manager - Communications for 10 years including through the period when they won their 2004 flag. Ibby (indi's grandmother) works as a volunteer for the club. Indi's had all the PAFC greats as family friends through her growing up. Plus Indi has a small nuclear family but a close extended family that are all based in Adelaide. Clearly that's why she slid to an SA team. Despite all of that, there were a few tidbits I gleaned and clung to in case we drafted her. 1. Her mum is a Volkswagen dealer (my most impressive bit of detective work). 2. Among the Port greats that are family friends is Stuey Dew. 3. Maybe we could have gotten Chloe Molloy around her as someone who was a passionate supporter of another club that has transitioned to being a Swan and flourished. Anyway, enough of that...

Now I have to do a deep dive on Zipporah. Plus the others (although I expect there will be less info available in their cases).

Rasheed the worst flight risk ever apparently, which is a bummer. Don't want to waste a pick only for her to bail home.

Hopefully I've shed some more light on that. I really do think she would have been a risk of returning home at some point down the track. In her draft interview she said how fanatically she supports Port and lamented how "unlucky" she was that this is the first year the draft has turned national. I think the Crows have a better chance of hanging on to her. I haven't seen any footage but I heard her family donned Crows scarves after she was drafted, which is nice.

Caitlin Reid and Sarah Steele-Park about whom, along with Amelia, I know exactly zero. Time to do a little research.

Keep us posted on what you find!

Given that background she's probably even a risk pick for the Crows and might haul arse across town to Port :tongueoutv1:

Here's a wrap of our draft.

Overall I feel like between the trade and draft we have become a faster team at the expense perhaps of some contested strength. The gains outweigh the losses and I think we will be a better team in 2025 (but with plenty more room to grow further in future seasons).

What happen to Emma Juneja?
I guess we now understand why she wasn’t prelisted. For whatever reason the Swans didn’t think she was at the level of others available.
They used to think the same about Imogen Brown. Things can change.
I liked what I saw of Juneja in the VFLW, so maybe down the road.

So our only 2 academy players to get picked by the national academy have both been passed over by the club. Interesting.........
It's a bit concerning isn't it.

Were the national academy selections tokenism? Just added a couple of our academy girls to show they're taking an interest.

Are the Swans ignoring their own backyard? Or is the backyard empty?

If neither were good enough to add to an AFLW list, why not? The gold coast academy seems to be becoming a production line, did they start earlier?

The above are just questions, for discussion. There are no axes being ground here.

Just my opinion I’m fairly new to aflw.

I think Sydney Afl needs to be developed into a feeder competition for Giants and Swans the issues are the focus is on Academy players and most players in Sydney are mature age players that may have come into the sport late or just starting to develop and just need the opportunity.
There is No pathway other than Academy under 18’s.
The players that are over 20yrs get no elite coaching (no disrespect to Sydney Afl Coaches) and need to move to VFLW which is a bit unrealistic for most considering No payments ,careers etc. and need to stay, some are lucky enough to be Train Ons , however are restricted to only one Training day with Aflw Squad which isn’t enough to really develop to that next level. Teams shld have opportunities to potentially have 2-4 development players added to list to allow the Full Time Training and Practice games etc. This way if any injuries etc when called upon they are ready physically ,mentally and strategically.

In my opinion Sydney should have a VFLW combined Team that can play in that competition or the Swans have a VFLW Team mix of Academy,Mature Age players and AFLW listed but play the entire competition. This will allow development of not only Players but the Sydney Afl competition to become stronger and not 2-3 Team focussed.

Sleeping on our draft take I've become pretty happy. Zippy is a quality player who fits Gowans' game plan. The three late picks all fulfil a need, a link up forward, a genuine backup ruck (thankyou!) and a defender who might double as a defensive mid.
I still would have preferred McDonald as a tall forward but I guess there's always next year.
Hopefully Davies and HamiltonA will step up.
