Just my opinion I’m fairly new to aflw.
I think Sydney Afl needs to be developed into a feeder competition for Giants and Swans the issues are the focus is on Academy players and most players in Sydney are mature age players that may have come into the sport late or just starting to develop and just need the opportunity.
There is No pathway other than Academy under 18’s.
The players that are over 20yrs get no elite coaching (no disrespect to Sydney Afl Coaches) and need to move to VFLW which is a bit unrealistic for most considering No payments ,careers etc. and need to stay, some are lucky enough to be Train Ons , however are restricted to only one Training day with Aflw Squad which isn’t enough to really develop to that next level. Teams shld have opportunities to potentially have 2-4 development players added to list to allow the Full Time Training and Practice games etc. This way if any injuries etc when called upon they are ready physically ,mentally and strategically.
In my opinion Sydney should have a VFLW combined Team that can play in that competition or the Swans have a VFLW Team mix of Academy,Mature Age players and AFLW listed but play the entire competition. This will allow development of not only Players but the Sydney Afl competition to become stronger and not 2-3 Team focussed.
Sleeping on our draft take I've become pretty happy. Zippy is a quality player who fits Gowans' game plan. The three late picks all fulfil a need, a link up forward, a genuine backup ruck (thankyou!) and a defender who might double as a defensive mid.
I still would have preferred McDonald as a tall forward but I guess there's always next year.
Hopefully Davies and HamiltonA will step up.
I can see why we took Amelia. A little taller at 173cm, RMC suggested she has good acceleration and speed, links up well into the forward line and is strong defensively. Had a consistent season with 0.7 goals and 2.3 tackles off only 7.3 possessions . Looks strongly built. At worst good depth. The interesting thing for me is that not one of the Allies players got drafted despite many of them being rated in the top 50 (2nd-3rd rounds). Those players include:
- Emma Juneja and Ellie Veerhuis from the Swans Academy
- Ellie Hall, Ash Patton and Amelie Prosser-Shaw who I think are all from the Giants Academy
- Tatyana Perry from the NT
Very interesting. Yet, we weren't unwilling to select Amelia Martin. It's unclear whether that is simply because we rated her higher or because she filled a need. Gowans did say post-draft that we used those later picks to fill needs so maybe that's why we favoured her over, say, Juneja. However, Juneja, for all her talent, also seemed to be a bit unfit and that might suggest less professionalism (or maybe just less ready to play?). I agree there's still hope for those other players to get drafted to the AFLW, including as soon as this season.
Is there any way we still list the academy girl/s? (Juneja)
