Ledecky won 800m in 8.14.12.

Titmus won Oz trials in 8.14.06

2nd placed Madden did an 8.20 and in Oz trials Pallister did an 8.18.

This Titmus v Ledecky battle might be closer than it looked a few weeks ago.

Wow. I reckon Titmus has a good short, just needs to pace the middle a bit better compared to trials.

The swimming for Brisbane is scheduled for the new Roma Street Brisbane Arena,
No longer according to their new Premier. He wants to transform Suncorp for the swimming. I suppose this all depends if the Socialists stay in government up there.

Haven't been confident Stubblety-Cook will defend his 200m Breaststroke Olympic title and even less so after US swimmer Matt Fallon at day 5 finas has just gone to #1 rank and pushed Zac to #6 in the qualifying period. Zac swam 2.07.40 at the trials.

Zac is going to have to emulate his 2.06.38 from Tokyo. I for one aint saying he cant do that.

Does he??, or is it a thought bubble by News Corp???

Bobby Finke is back. Goes to 2nd ranked in 1500m

He will go close to defending his 800m / 1500m double from Tokyo. Irishman Daniel Wiffen is ranked 1st in both events.

It will great to get your update on this at the end of day 9 Russell.

Day 6 1st Aug / Finals start 4.30am AEST 2nd Aug
M 200m Back
W 200m Fly (CAN) W 200m Breast (SAF)
W 4 x 200m Free

Day 7 2nd Aug/ 3rd August
M 50m Free M 200m IM (FRA)
W 200m Back

Day 8 3rd Aug/ 4th August
M 100m Fly
W 200m IM (CAN)
Mixed 4 x 100m (GBR)

Day 9
M 1500m (IRL)
W 50m Free
M 4 x 100m Medley W 4 x 100m Medley

So days 6 to 9 my predictions are
USA 5, AUS 3, CAN 2, GBR 1, IRL 1, FRA 1, SAF 1,

My first 5 days and 20 events prediction was
USA 5, AUS 4, GBR 2, GER 2, FRA 1, CAN 1, IRL 1, JAP 1, and CHN 1 + 2 x 0.5 RSA 0.5 ITA 0.5

So USA 10, Oz 8 is similar to Tokyo. GBR 3 and CAN 3, FRA, IRL and GER 2.

I don't have an Oz Male winning an event but the 8 female events I have said Oz will win is 6 Freestlye events, and 2 backstroke events - 50m Free Jack, 100m Free MOC, 200m+400m Free Titmus the 4x 100m and 4x 200m Free relays and 100m+200m Back McKeown.

I haven't bothered to try and do silver and bronze medals, but I would expect total medals for USA to be between 25 and 30 and Oz 15 to 20.

SwimSwam will do their gold, silver and bronze predictions about 1 week before the games starts. They will be a lot more accurate than me, but I don't think there will be massive change from Tokyo for medals won by countries, just some who won a medal or two, might flip them to gold and vice versa.

Here is a partial medals table from Tokyo split between male and female and also a table showing relay results. I've only included nations that won gold and included Italy as they won 7 medals and could flip a couple of them. Netherlands I included as I thought they won 3 silvers but they won a silver in open swimming. Hong Konger Siobhan Haughey won silvers in the 100m and 200m Free.

Maybe another event I will have to change my pick. There is a swimming meet in Italy competing against the Euro championships. That might have prize money.

Daniel Wiffen did a 14.34 in April so I picked him in my list above. He has just swum a 14.53. Bobby Finke did a 14.40 overnight at US trials and second fastest in the 2023-34 qualifying period. Bobby might now start favourite to defend his Olympic title.

His brother Nathan Wiffen is in the final of a weakened Euro championship 1500m final.

Athletics statistician David Tarbotton had this graphic on his twitter site.

SwimSwam have now put up their dedicated 2024 Olympic link there in bight red at the top of their home page LHS.

Looks like they are doing a preview of an event every day. They have started with the men's 100m backstroke. I said that either Ceccon of Italy or Xu of China would win in my predictions 2 weeks ago.

They have gone for Ceccon and slotted in the 2 Americans, Ryan Murphy and Hunter Armstrong for for silver and bronze. See;
