The Size Matters Draft

1. Sam Lalor 188cm Big Bodied Midfielder
6. Josh Smillie 195cm Big Bodied Midfielder
10. Jack Whitlock 200cm KPF/Ruck
11. Bo Allan 191cm Defender/Midfield
18. Matt Whitlock 198cm KPP
20. Alex Dodson 201cm Ruckman
23. Hamish Davis 190cm Mid/Forward
24. Jack Ough 194cm Defender/Midfield

For years Richmond have been the land of the short people with a number of sub 183cm players being drafted over the years, which has seen us often struggle to combat opposition midfields stacked with big bodied types. So in an effort to address that, Richmond goes down the path of recruiting a number of bigger bodied types who could become midfielders in time. Lalor at 188cm is the 'smallest' player taken in this scenario, where we target nothing but size both in the midfield but also in the KPP/Ruck stocks where we get the 2 Whitlocks as bookends with Dodson earmarked as the long term Nankervis replacement.

B: Gibcus M.Whitlock Brown
HB: Allan Balta Ough
C: Ralphsmith Taranto Banks
HF: Lalor J.Whitlock McAuliffe
F: Rioli Lynch Campbell
R: Nankervis Smillie Hopper
INT: Ross Trezise Clarke Green Ryan/Dodson

Go Big or Go Home

If we end up with that draft haul I want your badge.

We’d be better off trading all our picks after 6 for future picks and taking a bunch of rookies under 190cm.

Our list isn’t short anymore, we only have 10 players under 185cm.

I honestly don’t hate it. Maybe a tad more speed.

Replace Barrat with Dodson and it’s better.
Given he is over 188cm then sure.

10 players under 185cm is plenty.

Sooooo........

There's always busts in the top 20 picks of drafts. They're not all going to be 200+ game players.

Who in this draft is going to bomb?

It's not about size.

It's how you use it.

Pick 1: Lalor, excellent with his power and penetration
Pick 6: Langford, his all round skills make him attractive, might be a little slow but knows how to deliver
Pick 10: Lindsay, his deftness and touch allows him to split things wide open
Pick 11: Berry, really is the cherry in the front end
Pick 18: Oliver, a real terrier who's hard at it
Pick 20: Gerreyn, looks like Tarzan, plays like Tarzan
Pick 23: Jack Ough, the name says it all
Pick 24: Bank for the loyalty program

A good chance it will be the 5th or 6th best rated mid. That's around pick 6 usually.

History supports this.

And yes I have taken into account the f/s bid.

There’s a reason why we backed away from trading with North for pick 2.

I think we’ve figured out the player we rate at pick 2 will still be there at pick 6.

I think there’s a very big chance we end up with
Lalor
O’Sullivan
Smillie
Shannahan
Oliver
Hynes
M.Whitlock
Dodson (pick 24 traded for a future first and an early third rounder to get Dodson).

I think you’re close, but I’m guessing we trade some picks into next year and slide a couple back in the draft to get some value in the 30-40’s and build a draft hand for next year.

2018 it was the 4th mid - Tarryn Thomas

2019 was the 4th mid - Dylan Stephens

2020 was the first mid - Will Phillips

Who in this draft is going to bomb?

Whoever the Tigers select will hunt.

Whoever north select will only go in 1 direction.

Whoever the Blues select will be feeling down.

But to answer your question, naturally whoever the Bombers select will bomb. :)

As always it's only when we get this close to the draft where journalists speak with recruiters more and more, that questions about players start to be asked publicly. Outside Ashcroft, every other player in the top 8 midfielders has question marks against them.

Lalor - can he reach his potential/injury concerns
FOS - does he have the right attitude/accumulation concerns
Smith - is he too small to mix it in the midfield full time/damaging enough
Draper - is there a go home factor/injury concerns
Langford - is his lack of pace too much to overcome
Smillie - can he use his size to dominate in the air away from the stoppage
Reid - is he quick enough & damaging enough

Do not in the slightest envy our recruiters heading into the draft. There is going to be no shortage of melting happening next Wednesday night when the perceived favourites don't get picked where we're all hoping they are.

The knock on smile being poor in the air isn't a huge worry for me. We are wanting him to be a contested beast who can win on the outside and hurt not be the next Jack Riewoldt.

I wouldn't say Cripps is a great overhead mark for his size and doesn't really matter.
