Less than a week to go. This week has seen coaches and others go back to interview their preferred candidates, formalising the scenario. This of course comes with leaks forming through players, players family and friends and player managers.

Like Cal said yesterday some names are big focus for us. Lalor, O’Sullivan, Smilie, Whitlock, Bo Allan. There’s been a ton of work lately on all these guys. I’d have these guys as favourites for our first picks. I’m still not sure what we do at Pick one. Media is all over Lalor but I’ve heard strong word on FOS being the one. So we will see.

I know West Coast are thinking both Bo Allan and Jack Whitlock are not gonna be at their first pick so I expect Jobe Shanahan to come into play for them if all falls as expected.

Still a lot of water to go under the bridge. But some names are now coming out as more favoured for certain teams. A lot more will come over the weekend then Cal’s mock will be as close to what happens as possible.

All I know is it’s an exciting time to be a Tiger. 🐯
music to my ears regarding the players you mention at our first four (I'm lalor>fos in preference though)

if armstrong is on the board, would it be him over whitlock or do we rate whitlock the same/higher but with ruck chop out ability?

Why Shanahan for West Coast? I'm amazed that Whitlock was on our radar, literally the last player we need.

someone tell me their Smokey ….. someone you really like in this draft that hasn’t been mentioned much
Fan of Xavier ivisic who doesn’t make too many lists - tough bastard with huge workrate, reckon he could develop to do a kane lambert role which was so crucial in the flag era
& I’d look to rookie Floyd burmeister.

nank's 31 near the end of next season, and while obviously we can pick up reject shop rucks and maybe get on with that, I think it's just worth it to bank dodson

I know we've got 2 cat b basketball rucks but they're so far off it and we probably won't have another shot at a prospect like this in a while, so would be great to get him at the "start" of our rebuild. and with the amount of picks we have it's not like we're putting all our eggs in dodson's basket

like some of the numbers he puts up are insane. a 32d, 10cl, 5t game is huge for a ruck, and he still has upside after skipping the whole of last year for basketball

Haven’t heard Armstrong been mentioned. But lots of info regarding Whitlock which shows work being put in. So I’d go with the rate him above Armstrong.

In response to zero demand, and utilising my in depth knowledge of the draft based on reading stuff from people who have read stuff from people who watch the players, and who are not actual employed to draft players into the AFL, here are my thoughts.

Firstly, doing this is more worthwhile than whatever it is I am actually paid to do.

Secondly, we should think of this as a rebuild over multiple seasons. 2024 is not a one off for draft picks or trade/FA.

Thirdly, the whole is more than the sum of its parts. Drafting should think more broadly of team structure and balance - see GWS getting so many good mids that they start shedding them left and centre.

Fourthly, yeah whatever. Oh yeah, structure is 1) midfield, 2) spine, 3) rest, and leadership and character is super important to me. We have a good amount of young KPDs. After that not a lot of depth in younger guys. But we also have a number of talented young players, who look like they can become good role players at least.

Context -
  • This draft has a abot 35ish first round quality players. So every player we draft is good. This is a good draft to build the core of a list.
  • The Tigers are likely to be last next year. May surprise, but still will likely have a top 5 pick.
  • This year is top end mid heavy, with a good number of good but not elite KPs. A number of the draft gurus have said that next year has multiple KPs better than any this year. So I wouldn't reach for a KP until the really good mids are gone.
  • We can trade into a better position this year, and into next year.

Only richmond picks, and focussing on type of players. Assuming no trading, btu discussing trades.

Pick 1 a player who can crack games open - So likely Lalor or FOS. Lalor has huge upside - elite multisport athlete. Never truly fit or dedicated to footy. Lalor great leadership, which I rate very highly. FOS injured this year, very very good at many things. Possibly Lalor for upside and leadership, but it's hard because he hasn't truly shown what he can do so far.

Pick 6 a mid who absolutely offers a point of difference and leadership - Jagga is my hope here. He would be perfect.

Picks 10 and 11. If high end mids have slid then pick them, otherwise difference makers. I am agnostic to position if the mids aren't here, just get guys who can make a difference.

Picks 18, 20, 23, 24. Round out the positional structure. Also looking for guys who will be competitive at the AFL level and allow us to build a long term balanced team. So I am OK with a ruck, KPF, small forward, rebounding defender etc. Not looking for a KPD (trainor is great, but I am very leery of his concussion issues)

Trade wise.
  • If we can do a double trade 1) Saints 10 or 11 plus 20ish for 7, the 7 and 20ish for 2, then we get 1,2 , 6 to build a high end low risk midfield in one hit. Fill in holes thereafter. And we keep 10 and 11 for he best of the rest.
  • Slide for a later 1st + F2. Do that a few times and get 2 or 3 F2's. Next year teams will need points and F2's will be very valuable.
  • Trade for F1's if possible.
  • Buy picks with our spare cap space.

May end up with less picks this year. But better quality. Then next year 2 or 3 1sts plus the ability to trade into other firsts for 2025 or 2026. Get the best available - hopefully a top end mid and top end KPF.

By 2026 have a strong midfield for a decade set up, spine set up, top end talent for small forwards and ball movement. Then fill in with more drafting, trading and FAs.

Not a list of p[layers, but more of a strategy that I hope we follow. This is a great year to suck and have our draft hand. Pity there is no Reid this year, but very happy with where we are at.

Lalor FOS Smillie Sharp would be a nicely balanced midfield.

Who knows what happens next year but if you do pencil in Sharp, and then think about the balance of Lalor/Smillie/Sharp, there is a need for the class of FOS.

…particularly if we’re not shifting out TT or Hopper anytime soon…..

Sharp and Lalor do the defensive work so well, Smillie is the modern tall midfielder who will extract it, I want someone with some X Factor alongside Lalor. A play finisher

Don’t see us going for Pick 2. A long shot. North want too much and we do rate others around that mark. So we will just have to pick one.
Geeze that’s a bit of a shame
But understand if it price is too high it’s just not worth it either

Watched the video of the young boys back at training Adem spoke quite well so maybe this is his comfort zone

but what I did hear him say that the young boys are the future and that there will be 8 new players sitting in the rows with them.

Sounds like Blair may not be trading too many picks in this 'super draft' especially since most commentators are saying 2025 draft haul is a little bit of meh!

Now if his verbal skills have improved let us hope it translates into the coaches box.
