Is anyone else concerned by our potential midfield next year being way too slow. With the consensus on here being that we'll prob go with Lalor and Smillie as our first 2 - where's the zip? We have ...
  • Taranto
  • Prestia
  • Ross
  • Hopper
  • McAullifee
  • Sonsie?
  • Banks?
  • Dow
  • Lalor
  • Smillie

Who in the draft best meets our needs in the midfield - certainly not a combo of Lalor and Smillie - I can't see our recruiting team going there. I like Lalor and maybe Smillie if he slides to 10 - but more than anything we desperately need a quality speedster in the midfield. Or do we target that with our later picks - which is risky IMO
Not personally
I think a “slow” looking midfield is actually just a midfield that is being caught out of position on the rebound

The fastest looking midfield from the past 10 years that achieved success was ours and it was Cotch, Dusty, Prestia, Grigg, Nank, Lambert, Graham and Sheds for the most part if anything on paper it’s a slow midfield

None of those players are “fast” but they were smart and covered each other and had the benefit of our fast small forwards that would push up the ground to help defend a rebound (Georgie, Butler, Rioli)

Contested ability, defensive accountability, burst speed, footy iq and a clear and coherent gameplan is far more important

Agree, I posted this last week.

Draper or FOS at one would be perfect.

That's why 6 and 18 to Nth is crucial so that Lalor can be complemented by one of the above

Wouldn't be surprised if Tassie come along and make a godfather offer to Cadman, hence if we want him, we need to act.
He's not going to sign with Tassie at end of 2026 to play only VFL in 2027. Tassie comes into the comp in 2028. Their draft concessions just start a year early.

I suppose when you look at Brisbane's midfield it doesn't look fast either - Neale, McCluggage, Dunkley, Ashcroft dont have lots of leg speed. Like you say the other factors can definitely mitigate that need. Leg speed may be more important on the outside and off Half back - players that can break the lines like rioli.

Bauer's height is 192cm
Lefau's height is 195cm
Balta's height is 194cm

Don't get me wrong, 2 cm might be a lot to some people especially when it comes to the nether regions but you can't say Bauer isn't a key position player because he is 2cm shorter than one of our key defenders.

Believe me I'm probably the last person that could be accused on ignoring ways to build the list.

If anything I over think the list build scenarios and try to form my opinion around all options.

Earlier this week I posted a depth chart and possible best 23 for next year to highlight where I see holes in the list.

Our best area is defenders where we're quite solid, but there are a few getting towards the end in Vlastuin and Broad who are both 31+ IIRC.

Our midfield is deep in terms of inside mids but light on for outside class. Yet when you look at a lot of the wish lists it's mainly inside mids that people want to draft, where as I've been strong on getting hybrid mids and outside class.

As for our rucks and KPF stocks they're a mess. Nankervis and Lynch are our only proven options and both could be gone in 3 years time. So I'd have no problem if our recruitment team opted to target a genuine ruck and 2 genuine KPFs in the draft. There is no guarantee that we'll land a free agent or trade for a ready made option over the next few years so cover our bases now and get in players that are highly rated without having to decide on getting them or a midfielder
But that is exactly what you're doing!

You've dismissed trading and FA out of hand by saying.....
"There is no guarantee that we'll land a free agent or trade for a ready made option over the next few years"

You're solution to that is to throw more darts in this draft with the hope that one sticks.

I think everyone knows that we need outside run and class, but by taking up to 4 KPP's you eliminate the possibilities of drafting those types. Armstrong, Shanahan, Trainor and Dodson for example don't meet those needs and by taking them we miss out on Lindsay, Berry, Hotton and Oliver who are exactly the type of players that we should be targeting.

Yes, we are weak as far as a top line KPF is concerned and I would say that our rucks are worse, by all means bring in a quality young ruck/forward that the young team can build with.

Do not bring in a multitude of KPP's who are notoriously hard to find in the draft where the failure rate is much, much higher.

Pick them up through trading and Free Agency where you know what you are getting

It's all Tiger71 has to work with

Yeah that’s how I see it as well

Even if you look at our side last year we regularly had Bolton in the middle

Proud for pound possibly one of if not the fastest mid in the comp
When he won the ball and found space he was explosive and couldn’t be caught

But if he didn’t get first possie and his direct oppo does who he didn’t man up on the oppo team has an outnumber

Bolton’s speed equates to **** all because even IF he can catch up to his man they have the quick release option anyway and our midfield looks slow as a result

If Bolton was playing during our prime years in a similar scenario as soon as the ball bounces lambert busts his gut from the half forward line or Baker from the half back/wing to pick up Bolton’s man and get rid of that outnumber

It’s essentially how we played it except we just swap Bolton’s name for Dusty

It isn't just what height you are. How big your body is has a bit to do with it. Your head/neck complex could be 5cm bigger than someone else the same height. Means your body is 5cm shorter. They would crush you.

Not too bad. However that centre line is absolute shite.
Unfortunately, this draft will not correct the mistakes of list management decisions from the past 3 years but it puts us on the way.
Isnt next years touted number 1 pick a gun midfielder from SA, Sharp? will replace Prestia in the side.

Have you seen Bauer's athleticism?

Port Adelaide zeroing in on either Shanahan or J Whitlock with their first pick.

If we want Shanahan, we will need to use 10 or 11.
Norf will be thinking they may get a rnd 1 slider @ 62

Some genuine line breaking pace and penetration in the midfield would be nice.

Hopefully McAuliffe steps up too. The forgotten man.
Na think Kmac is still pretty fresh in everyone’s mind

Ross is the forgotten one

Is FOS fast? Draper is, maybe Jagga. Looking further down the list there is some quality outside speed especially Hotton and Lindsay. They become extra important if we do go big/slow at the top
FOS is certainly not slow, Mick Ablett was talking up his ability to side step out of tackles today on SEN.
What he run a 3 sec at the combine?! , so that speed along with his agility is going to give him the ability to slip most opponents.

Ablett was also glowing in his assessment of Hotton, who while not a mid, is quick. Said his ability to get to the drop of the ball at spillages was eye catching.

Talls are a crapshoot.
Rare to confidently predict a gun while they are still growing into their size. Armstrong looks the best, but still not sure he would make a #1 forward. There are promising talls throughout this draft though. We will get a couple at the right picks.
Agree with not being #1 Fwd
I would only take Armstrong if we know we're in with a chance of getting Cadman.

I recall that Lynch wasn't even a KP until his last junior year - he grew like 10cm

If we end up with Langford at 6 i would be pretty happy.

Closer to the draft i hate that there is no out and out no brainer picks in the top 5. Anyone think the top 5 in this draft would make it into last years top 5?
Reid and McKercher would still be there
