Serves everyone right for believing in us
I also distinctly recall thinking in 2004 that we were going to win the premiership. We were 9-3 and had just won Queen's Birthday at that point.

I think that was the same season we were on top of the ladder with ~five games to play.

We missed the top four, and got knocked out by eighth-placed Essendon in week one. :$

Just looked it up. On top with four games to go. Lost the last four and our first and only final.

I just hope there is heat on Tim Lamb.

Bloke continues to pat himself on the back while bringing in journeymen who struggle to even been on an afl list. These last 3 years including Billings, Mcadam, Dunstan, Schache, Hunter and most likely Fullerton (let’s be honest if he is behind Brown he is also going to be trash).

Our list has gone backwards with us losing Jackson, Grundy, Jordan, Brayshaw, Bedford in the same period.

I can’t remember the last trade the bloke “won”

Watching Jordon and Bedford thrive in their roles at new clubs after MFC prioritised Billings and Hunter says a lot about Tim Lamb.

They both left because Goodwin wouldn't play them. Not Lamb's fault.

And bit of a reach to say we "prioritised" players we brought in with picks we wouldn't have used anyway. They were bargain gets that we rolled the dice on.

My favourite loss apart from the Essendon final was when Carlton easily accounted for us at Princes Park with cooked Lance Whitnall and young star Ryan Houlihan running riot. The same Carlton side we’d beaten by 105 points 3 months earlier…

In his last three seasons in red and blue, Jordon played 18, 22 and 25 games. The 'not playing' excuse does not wash in his case.

Bedford is fair enough. He suited us 16 times in his last year only for the coaches to make him be an unused sub on 8 occasions. What an insult!

Calling Billings and Hunter 'bargain gets' is completely dishonest. They would only be a bargain if they performed above their cost. In no sane world would any one call them 'bargain gets', they are performing way below expectations; the price was right.

I've seen a few articles that said prior to the 2007 season starting we were getting pumped up as the best hope for a Victorian team to break the interstate dominance over the premiership.
Totally correct really

Melbourne frothing over an out of favour fringe player is so on brand.

Meanwhile our competitors are looking at blokes like Mcclugage, LDU, Weitering and Taylor, we are focussing on big fish like Angwin. Bloke looks like Sparrow 2.0 with his 12 disposals a match.

Out of those 65 games, he was unplayed sub 3 times, subbed off twice, and activated sub 9 times.

Saints get a future 3rd for Billings - Currently that would be pick 51.
Bulldgos got a future 3rd for Hunter, lost track of where it go traded to, but would have been pick 50 or later.

We didn't get anywhere near using either of those picks. Not sure what expectations you put on players brought in on those kind of trades, but I certainly haven't expected much. That's on you for having unrealistic expectations not based on actual value.

Come on now Jordon played sub more often than not.

I said the same last year and look how that turned out.
Good strategy.

Pick one or two of the hot trade options, discover that they don’t choose us or even pick up the phone, blame Lamb, Billings, Hunter or God for the tragedy

It's fine to bring in fringe players if you think they have something to offer or even if you want to add depth. They're almost always cheap and every club does it.

All of Sydney's gets last trade period were on the scrapheap at their former clubs. They just targeted well for their needs.

I know nothing about this GWS bloke but don't really see the point in melting over a prospect at round 11.

Does Billings and Hunter's output match or exceed the expectations that you had for them when they were first brought to the club?

Be honest.

No, but I do blame Lamb for being unable to convince any best 22 players to the Dees in the past 3 years despite us being in our flag window and have the lure of success.

He will have **** all hope of convincing any decent players when we start to drop down the ladder if he can’t convince any when we are up the top.

Hunter was fine last year. Billings has been more or less what you’d expect a flaky fringe player.

Exceed. I thought both would likely be mostly VFL and if they played regular games it was a massive bonus given what we paid for them. Was worth a shot as both have skill sets that we needed, and we literally only gave up picks we wouldn't have used anyway.

Not my fault if you expect a player traded in for a future third to be a gun.

I hoped for better too mate.

I have a horrible feeling though that no matter what anyone does as a gesture to equalisation, we remain on the wrong side of the ledger in VIC, along with Saints, Dogs, North obviously, even Hawks. We can put our calls in, but we can’t force someone to pick up the phone. One premiership wasn’t enough. Hawks got three in a row but it didn’t put them in a Geelong position where all they need to do is go “ahem” and a gun free agent says I am yours forever.

May, Lever, Melksham, Hibberd, Langdon all picked up the phone pre 2021.

However once success came it seems our recruitment team have rested on our laurels and happy to pat ourselves on the back when we bring in VFL plodders, despite most clubs usually going harder at bringing in established talent when in the window.

Not my fault if you expect a player traded in for a future third to be a gun.

I never thought Hunter or Billings would be a gun players. You are imagining a position I have never taken to try and win a debate on the internet.

For two out of favour players with ~10 years exerience and >150 games played, I would expect them to be serviceable and available for selection most weeks.

Instead we have got Billings who is consistently the worst on ground, and Hunter has been exiled from the senior team for having behavioural and substance abuse issues.
