Could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the basis of it is that his life is in Brisbane. Though, we'll see if he's highly rated compared to his name.
Similar scenario to what we're going to see this year with Kalani White in our academy. He's F/S eligible with the Dees but has lived his whole life on the Gold Coast and obviously has the choice of either club. I'm not overly confident he'll choose us (not sure he's even that good tbh) because his father Jeff is a diehard Dees man, but it would be interesting if he did end up choosing the Suns. It would be a pretty strong endorsement for Queensland footy over the next two years if we had sons of AFL legends Luke Hodge and Jeff White choosing to stay in QLD when they have the option to join a big Melbourne club. Almost like a reverse Marc Murphy situation when he had the option to go F/S to the Lions and chose to stay in Melbourne instead.

I've got no idea about his son, but Jeff White is terrific on ABC Radio and also with some of his short videos on Twitter. Very high footy IQ.

No doubt. I always thought it was a shame that we didn't keep him beyond a few years when we hired him as our inaugural ruck coach. He put a lot of time into guys like Tom Hickey who went on to have a pretty good AFL career. Jeff was with us between 2009-2012 so his son Kalani probably wouldn't even remember that time. At least Cooper Hodge would have memories of the old man donning the Lions jumper and potentially wanting to follow suit.

Jeff White's not the only coach you should have kept for longer than you did.

I was thinking more about Guy McKenna actually.
I'm of the opinion that we should've moved on Guy McKenna earlier. My preference was to replace Bluey with then-assistant coach Ken Hinkley (who was universally loved by the players) when that was seriously discussed towards the end of the 2012 season. Ken only left because he knew the club had committed to McKenna for several more years. I think it's more than obvious now that Hinkley is a better coach than McKenna ever was and I'm confident he would have coached us to better results had he taken over at the end of 2012.

Why wouldn't you want to come to the Lions at the moment? Best team in the comp with a pretty strong projection for the next 10 years. Hawthorn did well last year but can they back it up? Also, is Sam Mitchell going to end up being outed as a bit toxic? Time will tell I guess but I could see his coaching tenure going pear-shaped pretty quickly if he isn't careful.

Jeff White’s an AFL legend? 🤔

Jeff White’s an AFL legend? 🤔
How would you refer to him? Number 1 pick, AA ruckman, Demons BnF winner, State of Origin Victoria rep, 250+ AFL games, played in the 2000 GF etc. He kind of did everything a ruckman can realistically do without winning a flag.

Would you prefer something like former AFL star?

I’m not being critical, but labels such as legends and stars is bandied out way too often for players that don’t deserve such standing.

Matthews and Voss are legends. Ackermanis and Lappin were stars.

I’d go with former AFL player or former AFL no 1 pick when describing White but that’s me; all semantics really which I should’ve left alone.

Fair enough. I think it's mostly subjective anyway since we don't have recognised criteria for those words (unless we're referring to the Hall of Fame Legend status).

The point of the post was that convincing sons of notable VFL/AFL players to stay in Queensland instead of joining their father's club in Melbourne would be a great sign of growth for footy up here and both of our clubs have the opportunity to do so over the next 24 months.
