Given that Aliesha Newman has now departed to GWS I wonder if we'll have a new Indigenous guernsey this year.

I guess we might but I think more likely we don't.

Hopefully it provides a little extra income for Aliesha too because I expect she gets a small percentage of the merch sold featuring her design. Aliesha remains tight with our playing group and I was sad to hear her answer the question about why she moved to the Giants that "the decision was made for me". Evidently, and slightly surprisingly, the club decided that Sarah Grunden was a better fit for our needs than Aliesha was, despite Aliesha's much greater experience. I can't see who else is going to take that role that was played by Aliesha.

By the bye, I think our Indigenous players number just one (Cooper Vickery) across all our 76 listed players following the departure of Franklin, Anthony & Newman. Is anyone aware of any others? Are any of our new recruits Indigenous?

I think you're right in regards to our indigenous representation.

Marvel’s $225m upgrade improved women’s facilities. But AFLW still won’t play there

Er um why not

But AFLW commentator Chyloe Kurdas questioned why the AFL’s own stadium wasn’t being used to support the growth of the women’s game.

I presume it's something about the crowd sizes don't justify using such a large stadium.

Players and coaches say they like playing in the large stadia and perhaps they should be listened to if the costs aren't prohibitive? Even if the AFL owns the stadium it could still be expensive to fixture games there. On the other hand, if it's not being used, perhaps there's a cost in not using such expensive infrastructure. Plus the AFL, with all their government subsidies (for stadia and infrastructure in particular) have a responsibility to the community and to develop the game.

I don't know if I have a problem with competition running alongside men's finals, especially if opportunity is taken to promote the AFLW to the eyeballs on the men's games. Ultimately I think the AFLW is going to have to run substantially concurrently with the AFLM because the season is going to get longer and you're not going to push it into the summer (I hope).

However I don't love that not only do the women have such a short season but now they also have to compress their season!? The men aren't playing 11 games in succession this season period, but the women have to play 11 games at the rate of more than 1 per week??

Eventually, when the W season gets longer, they will have to run it in parallel with the men's season. I will be sorry to be denied the extra footy in my life but it just doesn't see fair or right to shoehorn the girls' season into the awkward space between the men's pre-finals bye and Christmas. Potentially they could start the W season earlier than the men and give them some clear air that way - but can't really start too early because they need to have a pre-season and the men's season is starting earlier and earlier with the introduction of first Gather Round and now Opening Round.

Bring the crowds - get rewarded. Season opener to the Swans at North Sydney. With 6 home games.
1 Nth Sydney
1 Coffs Harbour
4 Henson Park

each club will play 11 home and away games across a 10-week period, leading to the fixture being labelled by week, rather than by round, for the first time in history.
