Without wishing to cast any shade on Jas I'm not quite sure why. She's a tallish forward now to play at her 4th club. Perhaps someone has a better idea than I what she offers.
Sounds like Gowans knows her well so maybe he sees something in her that's going to compliment the team. But do agree that 4th club doesn't auger well but maybe she might be our AFLW version of Ruck Jesus's?

Tallish yes, but she's played more down back. She may be seen as an attempt to plug the hole EllaH will be leaving. They've kicked tjhe same number of goals in their AFLW careers.

We cleared out most of our (mediocre) depth players. Adding one or two back (as DFA freebies) makes some sense in the hope they might be moderately better than what we let go. We already had a pretty young squad and it will become very young if we fill most of the vacant spots with draftees.

Separately, I read on the AFL site that Richmond have interest in Beruldsen (as we do in Imogen Brown), and Smith is also being courted by Freo (but might yet stay with us).

Here is the article in referencing this. Also things have gone quiet on Ella Heads which is a little weird to be honest as it was almost locked in as a certainty.

Sydney is hoping to secure North Melbourne's Lulu Pullar, though negotiations remain ongoing, while talks around a deal for Imogen Brown to head to the Swans and for Montana Beruldsen to get to the Tigers are also in the works.

Bella Smith has interest from Fremantle, but also remains a realistic chance to stay at Sydney, while Carlton secured a deal for Gold Coast captain Tara Bohanna late on Monday afternoon.

I was a bit puzzled why we didn't grab Imogen using the same free pick rule as we did Holly.

We'll presumably pick Juneja that way this year. Maybe the Swans had their eyes on someone additional (that they thought a better prospect than Brown)?
I’ve wondered that too. Decided the most likely explanation was we didn’t rate her that highly until she impressed in the VFLW campaign, and by that point our list was full.

Not sure how I feel about losing Beruldsen. At the moment she’s a strange mix of exciting potential with her genuine pace and willingness to take the game on, and some truly dumb and unaware footy.

After Beruldsen's impressive VFLW campaign, you'd swayed me endough to hope she could translate at least some of that form into the AFLW. Whether it was the step up in level, or the Swans AFLW being so often on the defensive, or something else - it didn't happen.

Could Ellie Veerhuis be the additional one we prelist.
It's annoying that we had to pay by giving up Beruldson who I've enjoyed watching for her high energy and potential. I think she wasn't selected for the last few matches of the season which had surprised me a little as I would have persevered with her and she was replaced by people that have since been delisted..wasn't Imogen Brown an injury replacement top up for Richmond and now they get a good player for a trade..I'm excited to have Imogen though.
We seem to have paid quite a bit in terms of our second draft pick for Darcie from Geelo g. From all the trades of all the clubs so far she seems to be the highest valued so far?
I'd be happy with Lucia Painter in the draft...talks and plays impressively

If we’re going to prelist any, Veerhuis seems the second obvious choice. Though I noticed in Juneja’s profile on RookiemeCentral she says she quite fancies the chance of being drafted interstate. So maybe she won’t choose to be prelisted. (I think they have a choice.)

I also just read Painter’s piece on the AFL site and thought she sounded like something we’re missing in our midfield. Hurley and Gardiner are great but they’re both quite slight. Two seasons of shinsplints sounds concerning, though. Is that something that can be addressed by smarter training, which she’ll get in an AFLW programme? I’m already frustrated by Ham’s ongoing foot issues that threaten to prevent her becoming the top liner you’d hope for from a very early draft pick.

If Heads leaves which sounds inevitable on the last day of the trade period tomorrow, hopefully we get Ports 1st.

Said earlier

#4 (5) - Lou Painter
#15 (16) - Sienna Tallariti

So if we end up getting Painter and then Tallariti as the Heads replacement it isn't the worst trade period.

Yes some will be disappointed by Bella Smith but she had played 36 games for 11 goals, yes she has played down back but if you remove the 5 goal game against WCE she is down to 6 goals in 35 games and has played a solid 10-15 games as a forward. Yes she is young but she doesn't seem to be soo prolific compared to the best in the comp

Good choices..I just found a few videos of Tallariti. She marks well, kicks a long way and steps her way around well.

Smith will struggle to get a game at Freo.
She struggled to a get a game with us this season. And had it not been for those five goals against West Coast, most of us would probably have expected her to be delisted.

I do think she has some attributes though. Height being one of them. She needs to get herself properly fit, and get a bit more competitive (mongrelish) in the contest.

We were already undersized before the departures of Smith, and probably Heads.

Mitchell is improving, AA Brenna is undersized, McCarthy had 1 good game, Ham is injury affected. The talls cupboard is very bare - even if Lexie and/or Giselle can show some key-posi form.

So Port essentially acquired Heads with a shift down of two places in the first round (and some later pick shuffles that are probably inconsequential in the overall scheme of things). We slipped down a few picks in the third round by exchanging Heads for Van Loon.

Apparently both Sydney and GWS attempted to attract Eilish Sheerin - but she's gone to North instead. There doesn't seem much go-home factor north of the Murray.
I guess that, given her age (>30), the prospect of playing in a successful team (as well as staying at home, where she probably has an established life) is more attractive. Probably don't blame her.

Moloney,Van loon, Brown, Pullar, Velardo, Grierson, pick 4 and an Academy pre list would be a significant upgrade on what we delisted even with Heads/Smith/Beruldsen going.

Well, I feel like this trade period hasn't really gone to plan so far. By which I mean according to what I envisaged - I daresay it's gone a lot closer to what the club had planned.

I didn't know anything about Moloney but she seems a good get, albeit not a particular need. I'm curious why she left Geelong where she was valued and getting games.

Losing Heads is a blow. Losing Smith after her breakout last game is disappointing. Both players are talls and that is what we most need more of and so far haven't done anything to address.

The trade return for both is underwhelming - especially for Heads. Port has basically given up nothing to get Ella - their first pick moves back two spaces but they got an extra pick back when they swapped around some later picks. If you took Heads out of the trade it wouldn't look like a strange deal for Port at all. But - lucky them! - they got a player they rate worthy of a 5 year contract who was close to AA squad selection and who is young thrown in the deal. Pick 49 is probably reasonable for Smith but we're not going to get someone ready to play with that pick in the draft. At least we got van Loon in return but she looks a step down from Heads sadly.

Swapping Beruldsen for Brown is a loss in the short term - we have to make it a win in the long term.

Grierson is some useful depth - as noted already, probably more useful than the players we delisted - and she cost nothing. She's also versatile, experienced, and 174 cm.

Remains to be seen which other deals we get over the line today. Pullar and Velardo are both defenders. Velardo is Heads height. If we get both of them, together with van Loon and Grierson, there should be a lot of competition for medium defender spots and good depth in that position. We'll have exchanged quality (Heads) for depth. We will depend on Mitchell and Tarrant maintaining their form and fitness. If they do, we'll be fine. If they get injured, we'll have depth to draw on.

Apart from Heads' departure, I'm satisfied but not excited about our trade period. The main disappointment is losing height when I thought we wanted to gain height - but we're adding experience and depth, which is great. Heads' exit is only disappointing but there wasn't much we could do, I fear. It stings that we didn't get a better trade return.

The draft is going to be much more exciting. Our first pick is going to net us an excellent player. I'm hoping for O'Hehir. Plus we'll get Juneja. Plus I'm thinking we may get one other player late in the draft.

Recapping, by my count we have lost 11 players!

Delisted: Szigeti, Steane, Sheppard, Whelan, Vale.

Retired: Woodward, Lochland and Bullas .

Traded out: Beruldsen, Heads and Smith

We have to downsize our list by 2 spots. So far we have Moloney, Brown, Grierson and van Loon coming back the other way with Pullar and Velardo anticipated. So, if we get all of them, we have 3 more spots left (11 departures minus 2 downsizing of list minus 6 players brought in via trade/DFA): pick 4, Juneja and one more.

Does this tally with what others are thinking?
