Today’s the day coaches normally find out who genuinely put the work in away from the confides of the club.

I know some people take issue with the amount of time players now spend away from the club, but I’m not one of those. The NFL is a good example of what team based professional athletes are expected to do in their off seasons. AFL fitness standards are more than likely at an all time high.

It's not about fitness, it's about practice and repetition of skills leading to being able to execute under pressure and fatigue because you've done it a million times before. Novak Djokovic would hit a tennis ball nearly every day of the year. Steph Curry would shoot a basketball nearly every day of the year. These AFL players and clubs are only half serious.

I’m of the opinion that if you’ve made it all the way to the top (AFL list) and you’re a below average kick, or have some other deficiency it’s there forever.
Example Wines was a bog average kick when we drafted him and still is.
Yes you get the odd one that improves but in general what you see is what you get.
 
Been in Ballarat nearly a month now, guess I should check in and see what's going on.
  • Everyone here sounds like Ken.
  • I really need to see the ocean again.
  • Not sure they know there are more then 10 clubs in the AFL over here
It’s the not the beach but at least you have Lake Wendouree

You are kidding yourself if you believe AFL athletes come close to training as hard as NFL athletes when they are away from the facilities during the off-season.
 
Build up to the season now . Should be interesting to see what we come up with as a forward group .
What becomes of Burton ?
What becomes of Ratogalea
What becomes of Marshall ?
Can any of the draftees break into the side .
Can Burgoyne take another step forward . ?
Is Richard’s a best 23 player ?
Can Boak still be a regular?
We’ve got great ruck depth this year . Can we play two rucks ?
Will Ollie Lord improve enough to give us the physical forward ? Can Wines and Drew be in the same team ?
Will Logan Evans continue to improve ?
Plenty of intriguing questions

When you can be paid an outrageous amount of money, have bonuses greater than the average afl salary whilst also being traded or cut without any notice, I would be pretty motivated as well.

It goes beyond that, because many of the highest paid players with the highest amount of guaranteed money and the utmost of job security, also are the hardest workers on their teams.

To a point yes, but I recon one can work on butter fingers. It’s a hand eye coordination & probably panicky combined.

I agree, AFL players have around [emoji6] months off & proper training for months of preseason. That’s & … soft

I reckon there are ammo players who put in more post-season training away from their clubs than many AFL players.

Pretty much.

If an AFL player was able to be cut like in the NFL, things would be very different.

Head NFL coaches will tell players that they will be selling cars this weekend if they don't shape up.

Went to training yesterday. Watched Rory Atkins kick a goal and immediately run up to Ken - who was already waiting there with his hand up for a high five.

I was almost excited for 2025. See you all at the footy in 2026.

After training Ken's gone to the other coaches, "I've seen enough of this new young Atkins kid to decide that our post Charlie forward line is going to be him one on one in the goal square. Move everyone else up past the wing, it can't fail. I'll be at the TAB until early March if anyone needs me to clarify more details. Get to work"

We'll all be eating our words when we win the flag in 30 years time.
 
I'm sure that NFL players are well prepared for their roles but they wouldn't make it half way through a quarter of Aussie Rules. NFL is all about bursts of power and speed and very few players would surpass 500 to 600 metres of high speed running a game. The average NFL player covers 1.2 km per game with the wide receivers covering an average of 3.2 km. The average AFL player covers 12 km per game and midfielders cover over 17 km per game. No other game I can think of can compete with Aussie Rules for the combination total minutes of fast running, distance covered and the intense application of strength and power. Therefore you might be very fit for NFL but lack the fitness of an AFL player.

They also work on technique. We are yet to see a significant improvement to our player's skills in the last decade.

That culture though.

How many AFL players actually say they want to be the best (and put in the work for it) rather than throw in the generic line that they will do what the coaches ask?

Our closest to that attitude were Tredrea and Wingard, and Wingard got pulled up by coaches for thinking that way.
