No,

We get Pick 38 ( Ben Camporeale) and pick 69 ( 57 points)

Pick 38 (465 points) 20% discount = 372

Pick 40 (429) - 372 = 57

This is why we will trade this pick out if the bid comes

Riley Beveridge said if we get a bid on Ben we will trade that pick out and match it to select Ben and then immediately trade back in to get another selection

The discount is fixed at 197 points for any bids after pick 18, so it would be:

We get Pick 38 (Ben Camporeale) and pick 59 (161 points)

Pick 38 (465 points) less fixed discount (197) = 268 points needed

Give Pick 40 (429) - less cost of 268 = 161 remaining - pick 40 slides to pick 59

Ugh. Forgot that rule.

Gutsy trade by North, but credit to them for making their move now. Gone are the days of waiting and/or trading back for most situations.

If say, Richmond traded their original Pick 11 to North for their F1 and North picked their CHB Whitlock, it would seem ok. Still a gamble, but ok.

Here, Whitlock drifts a bit, so North actually get a bonus very low F2 and the same player Whitlock.

Good move by both Clubs, and their unique situations. North are clearly hitting the GO button. Even if they've given up a Top 5 F1, they've got their 1st Rd CHB in now. And Richmond have clearly committed to 5 years of full patience.

I am a bit confused. Can someone categorically point to our ability to trade out 40 if a bid comes earlier for Ben?

I had thought you can’t trade out at the moment a bid comes if you want to then match.

Having a look at how this might go...

28. ?? (won't be Richmond)
29. Dogs
30. Weagles
31. Dogs
32. Saints
33. Port
34. Freo
35. Hawks
36. GWS
37. *
38. Port
39. *

Dogs - prob won't bid on Ben, likes of: Moraes, Ough, Dolan, Alger, Davis
Weagles - Davis would have to be in their sights. Otherwise a tall Shanahan, Whitlock. Unlikely to bid on Ben.
Saints - almost certainly after a mid, very surprised they didn't pick one earlier. Maybe Gross or Davis. Ben definite possibility, and not just out of spite.
Port - Hoping Shanahan or Whitlock will fall to them. Locals Dodson & Clarke maybe. And yes, Ben a possibility.
Freo - Davis if available. Maybe Gerreyn. Doubt they'd bid on Ben.
Haw - Moraes, Ough, Davis. Unlikely to bid on Ben.
GWS - Dunno...Maybe a ruck? Dodson, Gerreyn. Or a mid... and Ben would be up there.
* - Could see a bid here. Think they'll just go best available, need everything. One pick at least will go tall.

I think there will be a bid on Ben, just because there's a lack of quality mids remaining.

So... a phantom 28-40:

28. ?? (won't be Richmond) - Shanahan
29. Dogs - Moraes
30. Weagles - J Whitlock
31. Dogs - Ough
32. Saints - Gross
33. Port - Dodson
34. Freo - Davis
35. Hawks - Dolan
36. GWS - Clarke
37. * - Sims
38. Port - Gerreyn
39. * - Jaques

If we've still got 40 at this point, we have several options - Mraz, O'Farrell, Barrat. Alger also a tantalising option. However, I fear that a bid on Ben will come in that 35-39 range. Hopefully we can trade out and back in and have another pick in the mid-40s and still find at least one of this group available. Or Dennis, West, Nicholls or Burmeister should be around still.

My order of preference of those left I consider in the relative range. Really love Jaques and Johnson as players but not sure we're going to invest in another half back with our pick. Really really hope we don't see a Ben bid before our pick.

Shanahan
Gerreyn
O'Farrell
Johnson
Jaques
Alger
Dennis
J.Whitlock
Clarke
Mraz
Ough
Gross
Moraes

How I rank them as players not accounting for a needs basis would be a bit different but we're a very good chance to get a good player if a Ben bid comes after 40.

If a bid comes in at 32, I would do a deal with the Lions

Trade pick 40 for 49 and 56, 49 and our 55 covers the bid

After we obtain Ben, go back to the Lions

Trade 63, 64, 67 ( which come in a little) for 47

Essentially we only go back 7 spots
Depends how many picks Brisbane intend to take I suppose. They started with 6 spots available. Maybe 4 picks? They've taken 2. This deal gives them 40 and 46 to use on those picks (an upgrade on 46, 47), so sounds fair, I guess.

They do have another couple of academy kids, made 1 is bid worthy, but we could shuffle more later picks to balance rule requirements

It’s been done in several previous drafts, you can trade out the pick when the bid comes, you just can’t trade back for the same pick

Saints - almost certainly after a mid, very surprised they didn't pick one earlier. Maybe Gross or Davis. Ben definite possibility, and not just out of spite.
Travaglia has decent midfield potential, Tauru can certainly get leaner.

Regardless, the Saints have next gen bids coming in, they might not have another active pick.

If we can get permission to use our futures, I would be keen for us to target pick 29. Eagles and whoever is gunning for pick 28 will be chasing a tall, and the quality is still on the board.

If we don't go a tall at 38 (if we get to it without a bid) I'd love either of these two. Johnson can play anywhere on the field, Jaques a bit more of a locked in defender imo. That said I think it's highly highly likely we go a tall.
