I honestly expected at least Clemson to join the SEC but Big 12 makes more sense from a getting to the playoff standpoint. They'll both go to the 12 and be the best 2 teams straight away.
The SEC wasnt going to happen since they are not happy with ESPN. the big12 being 50/50 ESPN/Fox but Fox are putting up the extra cash to get them.

What's the point of that. It's a sideways move at best.
I think they feel the ACC is next to get picked apart like the Pac-12 was. the yearly money is less then $10m apart and it will cost a stupid amount to buy out of the GoR

Unless there's some new tv deals to be signed if they join, but they're going to be miles off the pace of the SEC or BiG10 deals.
Big12 signed the deal late 22 but doesn't start till next Aug. They went so early because they jumped ahead of the Pac12 while they were still alive. About $40m per school but goes up into 50s by the end of the decade.

Well short of the 75m the SEC are getting. Or the 90m the big10 are getting

In 2026 ESPN have an option for the back 10 years of the 20 year deal. Feel like they will be forced to exercise it. Either to keep FSU/Clemson and co happy or because a few schools left so won't want to pay as much.

That's why the next 12 months will be big for them.

The musical chairs stuff around realignment is fascinating (if it didn't destroy the sport). The reasons conferences chase teams to join is more tied up in a TV market over the team being good, or having a fan base (BiG10 chased Rutgers to get the NY TV market).

If they're not adding tv revenue, and they're also a difficult partner, you can see why they might be left without a chair when the music stops

It is destroying the sport. its all about money now. regional rivalries are being killed over some extra $.

Like how does it make sense for the former Pac-12 teams to fly to the the east coast every other week. even worse for non revenue sports.

Football just needs to be seperated, for the sanity of everything but I think that ship has sailed.

It will when the SEC and Big10 break away and swallow up a bunch of the others and offer them smaller cuts and the big names get bigger cuts.

It will be a Fox league and ESPN league where they have a joined playoff.
