The new york giants hard knock episode about the barkley negotiations is aging very poorly for the giants. Clearly shows the ineptitude that runs from the mara family right down to their front office.

Its also why Hard Knocks offseason wont be as indepth next time. Teams wont want to look like fools like the Giants.

There would be a call to replace Darnold based on his last two games if there was a viable QB replacement on the bench at the Vikings. That kind of form and the innate tendency to turn the ball over mean that any evaluation by another team to sign Darnold in 2025 is going to be a complicated one. There are some desperate teams out there, and a general lack of good QBs…..
Rodgers to the Vikings mimicking Favre's career path.

You don’t pay rbs period. Plus Barkley only this good cause his playing behind 2nd best oline in football.

Tracy is decent replacement at 1/15 of the price of Barkley, that money is better spent elsewhere. The giants were still going to suck with Barkley bottom 5 team cos qb sucks. Also giants will get end of 3rd round comp pick for loosing him in free agency. Only bad decision giants made was having it appear on hard knocks.

Just because recent modern thinking/trends is to pay QBs and WRs and not pay RBs doesnt mean it should be absolute or copied from team to team.

I wouldve paid Barkley and not paid Daniel Jones...not in hindsight but way back then it was obvious...Barkley the face of the franchise, best offensive player, and Jones a bust.

Browns did the same error paying Watson all that money when likelihood was he would lose his mojo given the embarrassment of his off field actions.

King Henry is worth the money and we have appreciated all the teams that passed on signing him.

The dont pay RBs argument is wearing a bit thin, its not like they are being paid a fortune anyway (everyone lost their mind over the Chuba Hubbard deal but he only got 15m guaranteed). I think it just depends on team makeup.

I think the dont draft a RB in the first round still has merit however. Better off using that resource to get a bargain at another position that you would have to pay far more for (like QB, WR, Edge, DT, OL)

It's a line from people who haven't followed what's happened in the league this year. Some franchises identified a undervaluing in the market for elite running backs and paid in free agencyBarkley, Henry, Jacobs.

All three have had big seasons and are significant reasons for their teams success.

There is likely a difference between their value to good, and bad teams, but the idea that a team that wants to contend should never pay one is falling out of the orthodoxy imo since the CMC trade.

Saquon has won us multiple games this year against what we were getting from the position last year (which involved a thousand yard rusher).

Can't see why that's a bad use of the 12m cap if we want to contend while we have this roster, which surely we do.

Yep, 12m is **** all given the influence he has on games.

Still rather draft a rookie rb in 2nd to 3rd round and run him into the ground for 4 years rookie contract + 1 franchise tag then let him leave draft replacement. Will get 3rd round comp pick for his lost.
Cost about 18 mil for 5 years. The money better spent on oline or dline.

In case you havent noticed there are plenty of veteran RBs performing at a high level well past their rookie contracts. Plenty of rookie running backs who get injured or arent good enough to see the field to run into the ground.

It's wild to me that anyone could be watching Barkley and Henry beat the shit out opposing defences and thing "nah, not worth the money."

Those 2 are a different class of back. They aren't taking hits in the first half, they're doling them out before they wreck that same defence that they've beaten up in the second half. They have longevity because of their style of play, and their respective teams are riding them hard this year and winning as a result.

The notion that Gainwell or Shipley would be doing the same thing for the Eagles is ridiculous.

And what if that RB you are running into the ground ends up surviving just fine, is a Henry or Adrian Peterson type who can keep on going? He gets to his 4th year, demands a trade or release, you let them go to a team who ends up being your nemesis in the division/conference, etc?

Also, NFL rosters/cap are a fluid thing. As you reach his 4th year it might be just when your vet QB has retired and you drafted a rookie, need a reliable RB to help him. Or the rookie QB you already drafted had an ok/good two years but now wants that huge contract (a la Jones) but many in the building think he's a bust? Or many other things can happen like a change in HC, OC or GM. Or maybe you nearly make the SB and need to hold roster together.

Can see both sides of the argument here. If your team is shit with lots of holes I think you better building in the trenches. An excellent first round rb will probably not make you a very good team in a hurry as Giants, Titans and Panthers with CMC and Browns with Chubb sound out.

But put these players on good teams and they become huge difference who can change a team from good to contenders as has been shown with Ravens, Eagles and 49ers. Even Mixon at Texans. Jacobs. Imagine a fit Chubb at Buffalo or another good side. You’d pay good money for that. Hence I think Giants not to blame for getting rid of Barkley

Even with his good season so far I still wouldn’t have signed barkley. Before this year he had missed 25 games in 6 season for giants. Misses on average just under a quarter of the season.

For every Derrick Henry there are plenty that fall off a cliff after age 28.
