2024 Player of the Year Leaderboard

Remove this Banner Ad

To recap, trade/free agent recruits continued to dominate the Player of the Year award with Joe Daniher and Josh Dunkley becoming joint first time winners. Despite another Brownlow year by Lachie Neale, he couldn't quite win the big one finishing second by a single vote. Harris Andrews was third, making 2023 his third season finishing in the top three places. Hugh McCluggage couldn't improve on his win back in 2021 coming in fourth. Keidean Coleman had a break-out season finishing two votes behind Hugh while also winning the best finals player and the inaugural Black-Hart Medallist for the best Lions player in a Grand Final. Tieing with Keidean was Will Ashcroft who was a strong winner of rookie of the year despite Will missing games due to his tragic ACL injury.

Can Lachie Neale get back on top after a shameful second place? Can Joe Daniher win again and we'll see if we can contact him to present the award to see how little he cares about it? Can Hugh McCluggae redress the balance of all the trade/free agency winners and win one for the draftees? And who of our new draftees will manage to take out the rookie of the year award?

2023 - Josh Dunkley and Joe Daniher (48 votes)
2022 - Lachie Neale (75 votes)
2021 - Hugh McCluggage (54 votes)
2020 - Lachie Neale (68 votes)

Are finals going to be worth double?
Oh sorry, missed this. I was thinking I'd do 1.5x for finals and double for the grand final, as per how the voting was handled for the women's last season. Feels like a good balance.

I had basically done this post last week but it got eaten by a crash and I was pretty slack in redoing it.

Unsurprisingly, we set a new record for number of votes cast with 1289 beating the previous record which, in a nice bit of symmetry, was from round 1, 2019 for our win against the West Coast Eagles (1166).

Double the votes for this one too and anointing of our second Black-Hart medallist for best on ground in a grand final.

Grand Final Results

SYD 9.6.60 - BL 18.12.120 at the MCG

10 votes - Will Ashcroft (242 votes)
8 votes - Callum Ah Chee (227 votes)
6 votes - Lachie Neale (225 votes)
4 votes - Kai Lohmann (214 votes)
2 votes - Brandon Starcevich (158 votes)

Final Leaderboard:

Winner - 65 votes - Lachie Neale!
Runner Up - 43.5 votes - Dayne Zorko
Third Place - 35 votes - Hugh McCluggage
Best Rookie - 1 vote - Bruce Reville
Best Finals Player and Black-Hart Medallist - 17.5 votes - Will Ashcroft

33.5 - Cam Rayner
32 - Josh Dunkley
31 - Joe Daniher
28.5 - Will Ashcroft
26 - Callum Ah Chee
26 - Kai Lohmann
26 - Harris Andrews
22.5 - Jarrod Berry
16.5 - Ryan Lester
15 - Brandon Starcevich
11 - Oscar McInerney
11 - Darcy Wilmot
9 - Eric Hipwood
8 - Lincoln McCarthy
5 - Noah Answerth
2 - Jack Payne
1 - Charlie Cameron
1 - Bruce Reville

Random Notes:
  • Lachie wins his fourth with a margin of 21.5 votes to go with his previous winning margins of 19, 41 and 21 votes. When Lachie wins, he really wins!
  • Jaspa Fletcher is this year's winner of the Daniel McStay award for playing all games in a season and not polling a vote. Admittedly, he did have one game as the sub. Charlie barely avoids this "honour" by polling one vote in round 16.
  • After not polling for his first six games back, Will Ashcroft polled 28.5 votes in his last seven. Last season Will polled 27 votes in the 18 games he played.
  • Brandon Starcevich polled no votes last year but this season he beat his previous season record of 14 votes in 2022 by one, with 15 votes and all votes were polled in round 21 or later.
  • Cam Rayner also had a best ever season with his 33.5 votes beating his 30 votes from 2022.
  • Ryan Lester polling history prior to his 16.5 votes this season are 6, 0, 0, 9, 0, 0, 5, 2, 8.

My son team manages his hockey side and hands each player straight after the game a list of all the players on his team squad list. Note several players don't play every week. Each players awards a 3,2,1 votes and they sometimes give votes to players who didn't play in the game.

At the end of season dinner he presents an award to the player who got the most votes in games he did not play in!!!

High of the club dinner.

Thanks for doing this ZB
