B: Cunningham mccartin rampe
Hb: Lloyd blakey florent
C: gulden Warner jordon
Hf: papley mcdonald hayward
F: Wicks McLean fox

Int: jmac Campbell sheldrick amartey

Others: roberts Reid melican hamling ladhams

Am I missing anyone obvious?

The others don't play a pressure fwd role, so fox seems to be a lock. I can't see them leaving out the 3 talls, so picking another tall like Reid or ladhams would be unlikely.

I also can't see how sheldrick doesn't get selected considering rowbottom is our only natural inside mid.

Imo sheldrick and fox have a strong chance of being selected.

Just ignore them Eddie, if we lose, we lose - c’est la vie, if we are down 0-2 after 2 rounds - c’est la vie.
In 2017 we came back from 6 straight loses to finish sixth on the ladder with the third best percentage and one win out of top four. Yes I do remember we then ran out of tickets and crashed in a big way in the semi, but my point is we are never out of it, so if we do happen to be 0-2, I will still believe!
This.

For me this is a winnable game, but that's not the same as saying we will win, or that it will be a disgrace if we don't.

I'm usually very nervous at the start of a season because I have no idea what to expect. The 2019- 2021 period was an exception, where I had no expectations before the seasons started that we would come close to contending. That was proven to be the case in 2019 and 2020, and then we surprised in 2021 with rapid improvement and some wonderful victories.

Those seasons, with low expectations, were arguably the most enjoyable ones to be a supporter, because I could look forward to just watching the players without any associated stress. But the novelty value of that mindset would wear out pretty soon if we ever (again) become a consistent non-contender.

You're missing the entire midfield mate :p

Possibly the biggest selection issue will be whether we select 3 tall backs (McCartin, Rampe and maybe/maybe not Melican). I think in turn that will hinge on whether Petty is selected for the Demons. There are very mixed messages emerging about Petty and the Demons are being very coy. Afl.com.au have predicted Petty will play and added this comment:

The Demons haven't ruled out Petty (toe) and Spargo (Achilles), but the premiership duo might be up against it after sitting out both pre-season games. Recruits, draftees, bolters: Who makes the cut for your club's first game?

If the Demons have only Schache and van Rooyen and no back up ruck, I don't think it makes sense to select all of McCartin, Rampe & Melican as well as Blakey and potentially Fox. A bit of ducks and drakes going on I reckon.
Goodwin ruled Petty out yesterday

Until Amartey can play 4 quarters of football I'd have Reid in the side every week.

And with his record Sam can be relied on?

That said, Joel must improve his fitness and reliability. Hopefully this off season has allowed improvements.

Amartey is seen as a power athlete that will give bursts of impact. His body isn't built for endurance or to play 4 normal quarters of footy. He would've had a better fitness base by now if he could. I doubt there'll be any physical improvement in Amartey. Imo the expectation on Amartey being a solid contributor for 4 quarters & having an improved fitness base is misguided. It would be like asking Mclean to be as nimble as Amartey or Mcdonald to have a big leap like Amartey. Their bodies aren't built to move in that way.

I don't mind Amartey only having an impact for the 1st half of the game because that's my expectation of what he can physically achieve & what he's shown. You plan for that by having an appropriate sub to swap him out. If the coaches think they'll get a 4 quarter performance from him or more TOG at the same effectiveness then they'll be disappointed more often than not.

My last attempt at R1 side:
B Cunningham McCartin Lloyd
HB Blakey Rampe Florent
C Campbell Gulden McInerney
HF Heeney McDonald Papley
F Wicks Amartey Hayward
Foll Grundy Chad Rowbottom
Int Jordan Roberts McLean Sheldrick
Sub Fox

I think we will see plenty of Gulden on ball and I am excited to see how our young mids go. Imagine if we are 4 and 0 when Adams and Parker are fit to play - would be a very interesting conundrum our match committee will have!

I'm leaning with this 23 too if Melbourne is going to be as short as it currently appears. Not sure about who will be the sub though.

I think the last spot on the bench and the sub role will be a three-way race amongst Fox, Roberts and Warner. That’s if Hayward is available.

If Hayward isn’t available I think Fox will be a definite starter, with Warner and Roberts taking the last bench spot and sub spot (in either order).

I was feeling confident we could cover for Mills, but losing Parker and then Adams has dented that confidence significantly. Never good when you keep losing players who all play the same position as it really tests depth.

Sidenote, when are the teams announced?

Where does roberts play if he's selected? There's no spot in our current defence. So wing or inside mid?

0-2 does matter , we need to start beating decent sides especially at home and get going early

chasing our tail has killed the team at times

So much this, as it allows you in the back end to selectively rest players, it's what Collingwood and Brisbane earnt the right last year to a degree. If you go 0-2, 0-4, you might MAKE the 8, but you aint winning you are using so many tickets to get there you have nothing when it really matters.

NewsCorp/Code attempt at predicted OR team

Foll: Brodie Grundy, Isaac Heeney, James Rowbottom
