2024 VFL Season - Finals

- Frankston are playing standalone clubs for its first four games: Williamstown at home, Port away, Bullants and Coburg at home.

- Our three interstate matches are all Saturday games and will be finished up by Round 14.

- Gold Coast will be playing us at Frankston for the first time since the northern states joined the VFL.

- Sandringham will play us at Frankston for the first time since 2015.

- We have away games against Geelong and Werribee once again. Sunday and Saturday afternoon, respectively.

- Other home games include Sydney, Collingwood, Casey, and Footscray.

I'm reasonably happy with this draw. Not having to travel to Arden Street, the Hangar, the AIA Centre, or Gold Coast are positives. Only negative for me is having to go to Geelong again, but at least it's a Sunday game instead of a Friday night like last year.

I’ve got an interest in GWS and we are only seeing them 5 times in Melbourne and 1 time in Geelong….oh well. Only 1/3 of their games in Vic. Was hoping for a few more.

Of coursethis isn’t a draw it’s a fixture…..I need to keep reminding myself of that.

The stand alones should should be happy, 2 battles of bell street, even though I see the Ants home game says tba, I presume it’s just the whole AFL thing but surely that’s at Preston City Oval. If Coburg can’t snag a win with this draw then it is time to either merge of move along.

... well, two-thirds of a fixture actually.
It’s weird that the stand-alone who really are not impacted don’t have their home games listed for the last third.

would be weirder to have some of them out and not the others for the last part of the season. I'm sure where stand alones play stand alones they would be pretty quick onto having a date for those last few rounds.

True

Port Melbourne being forced to play a home game v Casey at Casey is pretty funny.
Yeah I saw that- is there any reason, feel like I’ve missed something. ports only listed for 9 home games, 8 if you want to include that dee’s game

The VFLW play ‘away’ at casey the same day as the men.

Frankston have signed key forward Harrison Jones, who played for Dandenong Stingrays and trained with North Melbourne's VFL squad in 2023.

I thought it was pretty strange decision by the VFL to have some stand alone teams play twice. It’s funny to think Port Melbourne will play Frankston twice but not play a bunch of teams at all.

I hope it’s a good thing, hopefully it can help stand alone teams do better. Hopefully Coburg playing Northern Bullants twice can help those teams get at least one win each for the season.

I honestly prefer them fixturing it how they did last year though. If I were a player playing for a stand alone team I would want to play as many AFL affiliates as possible to get the exposure.

I certainly understand why some people would see it as a detriment that we play less games against AFL reserves teams, out of concern that we won't be properly trained against the best in the league. My opinion is that trying to create any meaningful form of equalisation in the VFL is a fool's errand, and it's better for standalone clubs to play against each other more often and foster genuine rivalries (which is something you can't really do against an AFL reserves team) that get people excited and passionate. That's the most glaring flaw of the VFL in my opinion; the lack of passion from the wider footy community that sees the VFL as a player development tool and not a worthy competition worth winning.

It’s the first step to removing teams from the VFL

Short analysis for GWS

Play twice … Dogs, Hawks, Swans
Don’t play … Coburg, Pies, Tigers, Bullants, Bombers

Looking at the fixture then, does the balancing up for the stand alones lead to imbalances for the aligned….not playing Coburg and Bullants.

You would think at least the aligned double ups could be avoided to then include Pies, Tigers and Bombers.
And have the aligned clubs all play once. I don’t know if this is unique to GWS or all aligned clubs have 3 double ups and 3 aligned clubs they don’t meet.

Why is Port persisting on playing night matches in colder times of the year when in the past this has been a failure and why are we playing a home game at Casey ?

Turf is getting done at NPO that weekend by the council that weekend according to the club

I wish they would televise Saturday afternoon games instead of early Sunday games.

As a free to air kid growing up, it meant there was a something to watch on the Saturday.
Instead of both AFL and VFL on Sunday.

Doesn’t really affect me now.
