2024 VFL Season - Finals

Interesting to see in two season so far, the WC winners have all been belted in the following game. can Williamstown buck the trend tomorrow…

Williamstown are playing right now. Leading by 14 points at half-time.

As much as the wildcard has benefited us this year, I hope the AFL recognises these results as a sign that it's not a great idea. 7th and 8th aren't expected to be flag contenders in a normal final 8. Throwing in an extra game and taking the bye away from them is just going to make it harder. As for 9th and 10th, even if they win their games the reality is that nobody will ever win a flag from those positions. The gulf in quality is too big.

Watching Southport record a big win and the Lions lose was a nice way to enjoy the pre-finals bye weekend!

Is it possible a Williamstown v Werribee Grand Final could happen ? Would be amazing, standalone VFA stalwart and historical clubs in the big dance ?

Great day getting my 2 VFL teams up, Willy in particular beating BH out east,
was only 5-6 weeks ago we got done on the same ground by six goals.
Kept BH goal less until mid 2nd term, defended well against the wind and ran the ball well.

Had a rough patch a month or so ago, thought their season was over but have now won a final (2?), so whatever happens from now it's a season pass mark.

Dogs had a tougher day, just getting home, but move to a Prelim.

To those complaining about umpires in both games, water off a ducks back for Dogs fans and Willy won by 5 goals, BH were pretty poor.

Hoping Werribee go on to win the flag. Fantastic, traditional and historic standalone club from the old VFA..

As a long time fan of the VFA (now VFL) to call Werribee a traditional and historic club still sounds weird - they were a new expansion club when I started following Williamstown in the VFA many decades ago.

Williamstown have a habit of winning premierships from outside of the top 2. Most memorable was 1990 when the Towners finished 4th before winning 4 straight finals to claim the flag.

As a born and bred Willy boy who played for the Williamstown baseball, cricket and lacrosse clubs, it is always exciting to see one of the oldest football clubs in the world go deep in September.

Deeply admired club within the suburb, an army of volunteers and local support, a genuine football club.

Of course they recruit outside the suburb, Willy only has 14,000 people after all but have strong links with Williamstown Juniors, amateur club Willy CYMS (Ebinger who played yesterday is a CY boy) and strong long term links with Spotswood FC.

17 final series in the last 18 years, incredibly consistent.

Pretty hard to develop players when AFL Vic has cancelled the development league.
