SHARKS!!!

Standalone GF!
Gee whiz! Southport have been incredibly impressive since entering the VFL - two GF appearances in three years and it probably would have been three GF appearances in four years had they not cancelled the 2021 season when Southport were sitting pretty second on the ladder. Well done, Sharkies! Now go and claim your first ever VFL flag and make it two premierships in two years for the city of the Gold Coast!

The Queensland teams have been highly competitive ever since entering the VFL. Funny to think back when the NEAFL was merged with the VFL and people had genuinely concerns that we wouldn't be able to keep up.

Southport in 2021 were helped by the fact they pretty much played another QLD side every second week

cute that the last two grand final losers get to go up against each other to win their own. might have to wander my way to Ikon Park next Sunday....

Southport travelling to victoria three weeks in a row is ****ed for a part time competition

The VFL does a half decent job at ensuring the QLD/NSW sides don’t overdo it on the travel front, but of course the final series is a different animal.

yeah, there is literally no way around it. Shout out to all the workplaces for letting them have the last couple of Fridays off

Amazing to think that if Southport wins, that the “Victorian Football League” winners for the last two years will be Queensland teams!

Got some decent wins against Vic teams Carlton, North and Essendon. Also beat other AFL reserves teams Gold Coast, Sydney and Brisbane. They really only had two easier games against Aspley. Plus, they proved next season they their position on the ladder was justified as they made the GF.

Not just Queensland teams. Both Gold Coast teams!

It's a Victorian based competition, which they knew when they joined.

not for this thread but maybe the name of the competition needs to be changed from VFL to reflect that there are now 5 non Victorian teams playing from the East Coast (the reserves of the 4 AFL teams and Southport)?

Changing the leagues name won’t change the fact that it’s a Melbourne based comp

doesn't make it less ****ed for part time athletes and staff that are probably not even that
There isn't really a solution to it unless you either make it a fully-professional league or close to it (which will be a huge cost for the clubs involved) or find another place for the northern clubs (which would also be extremely costly as you'd have to establish a new league from scratch.)

Southport are many times better off than clubs like Preston and Coburg, they are comparatively wealthy and have far better facilities, as evidenced by the fact they have finished top 2 in every VFL season they have competed in.

They might be "stand alone", but they don't really fit into the same category as the traditional VFA clubs.

Tips for the Grand Final?

Southport's three finals:

Defeated Footscray AWAY by 10 pts
Defeated Geelong AWAY by 29 pts
Defeated Frankston HOME by 92 pts

Werribee's two finals:

Defeated Geelong HOME by 21 pts
Defeated Brisbane HOME by 20 pts

Last time they played:

By looking at only the past six weeks, the Sharks have outperformed the Tigers.

Not only did the Sharks defeat Werribee at Chirnside Park (Avalon Airport Oval) when they met at the start of August, but analysing the results of the finals shows the Sharks have a slight advantage. I.e. Sharks managed to beat Geelong @ Geelong by a greater margin than the Tigers defeated Geelong @ Werribee.

If the Sharks managed to defeat Werribee at Chirnside Park, they should be able to beat them at Ikon Park... IMO.
