2024 VFL Season - Finals

The best players from the 2024 Smithy’s VFL and rebel VFLW seasons will be celebrated when the 2024 VFL and VFLW Awards are presented on Monday evening.

The event will be held at Palladium at Crown on Monday, September 16 from 7:00pm AEST, hosted by Nigel Carmody and Jess Webster.

Among the awards that will be announced are:

• J.J. Liston Trophy (VFL Best and Fairest)
• Lambert-Pearce Medal (VFLW Best and Fairest)
• rebel Coaches MVP Awards
• Smithy’s VFL Team of the Year
• rebel VFLW Team of the Year
• Rohenna Young Medal (VFLW Leading Goalkicker)
• Jim ‘Frosty’ Miller Medal (VFL Leading Goalkicker)
• Debbie Lee Medal (VFLW Rising Star)
• Fothergill-Round-Mitchell Medal (VFL Rising Star)
• Umpires of the Year
• Ann Rulton VFLW Volunteer of the Year
• Alex Gillon VFL Volunteer of the Year
• VFL Life Membership

The 2024 VFL and VFLW Awards will be presented ahead of the 2024 Smithy’s VFL Grand Final, which will be played on Sunday, September 22.

This weekend’s preliminary finals will determine the teams that will compete in the 2024 Smithy’s VFL Grand Final. Both preliminary finals will be played on Saturday, September 14.

The first preliminary final between minor premier Werribee and the Brisbane Lions will be played at Avalon Airport Oval from 11:00am AEST.

The match will be a repeat of last year’s second preliminary final, which the Tigers won by 30 points to advance to their first Grand Final since 2005 before going down to the Gold Coast SUNS in the premiership decider at IKON Park.

It will be the third-consecutive preliminary finals appearance for the Brisbane Lions, who will be looking to atone for losses to Werribee and the Casey Demons over the past two seasons.

The second preliminary final will be played between the Footscray Bulldogs and Southport Sharks at Mission Whitten Oval from 2:00pm AEST.

The Bulldogs finished the Smithy’s VFL home and away season in second place and will be looking to secure their first Grand Final appearance since winning the 2016 premiership.

The Sharks are aiming to reach their second Grand Final in three seasons, having played in the 2022 decider which they lost to the Casey Demons by 32 points.

Both preliminary finals will be broadcast live and free on the Seven Network via 7mate in Victoria and 7plus nationally. The matches will also be live streamed on AFL.com.au and the AFL Live Official App.

Had it from good authority that the AFL will change nothing at this stage
They need to remove the byes , why should 6 teams on the same weekend not play

They do it to extend the season so the afl reserves players have somewhere to play for the majority of the season.

It seems so simple.
21 clubs. 21 rounds (20 matches one bye).
Everyone plays each other once in a season (home one year, away the next).

Too logical to have simple, it seems.

more interstate travel, funding, the AFL bye, competition equalisation with rest periods, stand alone assistance w/ playing each other more often

some reasons off the top of my head why this is not going to happen, could probably go on

heard some whispers Murphy could be back on an AFL list by December. Johnson I was a little surprised by but can see why. Grey a finalist in the Fothergill-Round medal was well deserved

Tied for 10th last year. No nomination

Tied for 6th this year. Only a nomination

30 votes in the last 2 seasons combine. More than any other ruckman comfortably.

Had 65 hitouts, 17 touches, 4 marks and 10 tackles vs Werribee earlier in the year.

If he does anything close to that and Sharks win. I can’t wait for them to find a way to give someone else the Norm Goss

Not saying it does or did, surely everyones moved on now. People can redeem themselves and make up for lost time following past mistakes.
