Gather Round tickets snapped up in record time

The AFL is pleased to announce that more than 195,000 Gather Round…Festival of Footy tickets have sold… with five of the nine games sold out, 20,000 more than this time last year.

Member on sale on Tuesday saw a significant uplift in demand for tickets this year, selling more than 100,000 tickets in the first four hours, in comparison to the same amount in 24 hours last year.

This year there are an extra 47,000 tickets on offer for fans with the two Saturday matches being ticketed separately.

Tickets still remain for Collingwood vs Sydney Swans on Friday night, Carlton vs West Coast on Saturday afternoon, Melbourne vs Essendon on Saturday night and a very limited number of restricted view tickets and tickets for the Pepsi Collective for Port Adelaide vs Hawthorn on Sunday evening.

AFL CEO Andrew Dillon said it was clear Gather Round momentum was not slowly down.

“The demand for tickets this year was significantly higher than the first two Gather Rounds, with more than 195,000 tickets being purchased in the first two days,” said Mr Dillon.

“A ticket to the matches at the Barossa Park was always going to be one of the hottest tickets in town and the fans have certainly illustrated that by selling out both matches so quickly.”

South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas said: “Gather Round continues to exceed all expectations.

“We are honoured that so many footy fans from around the country are making the commitment to travel to our beautiful state to experience this event like no other.

“They’ll be truly welcome.

“If you haven’t got a ticket already – get in quick!”

Tickets for the remaining matches can be found here.

Here you go as a snap shot.....scroll down for top 5 by club

Unsurprisingly, every club's membership is dominated by regions that were traditional heartland and recruiting areas branching out from those heartlands.....obviously suburb population does some heavy lifting such as why Reservoir shows up for Collingwoood, Carlton and Brisbane, and Werribee for Dogs, North, bombers and the crows

Cranbourne get's a look in for the bombers...... all the others heartland heartland and migratory extensions of those heartlands (eg Sunbury particularly, but also Ballarat and Werribee / point cook)

And the last point is THE point. Marvel is disproportionately convenient to Essendon than it is to MCG tenant clubs

From that article you posted:

Carlton, Essendon, Geelong, Hawthorn, North Melbourne, Richmond, St Kilda, Sydney (South Melbourne) and the Western Bulldogs all had their biggest Victorian membership bases in their respective traditional areas.

Essendon

2024 members: 83,664
1. Essendon, Aberfeldie and Essendon West
2. Sunbury and Wildwood
3. Cranbourne, Cranbourne West and Cranbourne East
4. Ballarat, Ballarat Central and Ballarat East
5. Werribee, Point Cook

The way people talk about Docklands and the MCG as if they aren’t two stops apart from each other and easily accessible from every train line in the city.
There is a difference for those of us on the Sandy line where the trains terminate at Flinders and you have to change. Its not terrible going there but its shocking when you come back from the ground. Often wait 10 minutes for a Frankston train to take you to Flinders and then have to wait 15 minutes for the Sandringham train at Flinders.

It doesnt stop me from going but it would do for others.

FWIW, they actually put a football special on for us on Sunday which is the first time I've seen that to Southern Cross since we stopped going around the Loop.

The Qld government's latest Olympic backflip will see Brisbane Lions end up with a 63k capacity brand new stadium just north of the CBD.

Will be interesting to see just how big the Lions can get their attendances in the future - however RIP The Gabba.

BRISBANE is set to have a new home ground from the 2033 season following the Queensland government's announcement that the Gabba will be demolished and a 63,000-seat stadium built at inner-city Victoria Park.

Premier David Crisafulli confirmed on Tuesday the new stadium would be the centrepiece of the 2032 Olympics and then be home to the Lions and cricket after the Games.

The Gabba will continue to host AFL home games until then, before being demolished for residential development.

It’s a political mess but in the end I feel it’s the right outcome, especially for cricket and AFL. Great for the Lions and the games growth.

At least after the Metro Tunnel opens, Sandringham trains are meant to go straight through the city and out to Werribee/Williamstown (replacing the Frankston ones) so it will be one train only for you.

A huge benefit of the new plan is that there are no more wasted seasons without a proper stadium in place. Seems like they can stay at the Gabba until the new one is ready and just move across, with only the 2032 season disrupted. In the original plan the Lions were facing several years without a home.

I’ve bit my tongue, but thank you. Oh the drama of going to the other side of the city.

Interesting that’s it’s only slightly bigger than Optus. Populations roughly the same.

Side little tid bit.

This week is the final incarnation of Maddies Match before they wrap it up.

In the first few years I remember it being often a sell out and then nearly vanishing over the last few years.

A good win last week may help push this one up around the 35-40K mark?

Why are they ceasing “Maddies Match”?

I don’t think Tigers fans will be too enthused by heading to Marvel so it could be 33-35,000 crowd. If Tigers fans roll up, it could be close to 40,000

The west. Almost every time I go to the footy I have to pass Docklands on my way to and from the MCG. It's never struck me as a problem.

It is relevant in an assessment as to why some clubs' fan bases might in aggregate be more inclined to one stadium over the other.

Also, 2 stops doesn't capture the full picture either. From the west you would generally have to switch trains. It also depends on which way trains are going through the loop.

Worst case scenario you have a train switch and 4 stops (8 min journey).

I understand I choose to live in the country and it’s my choice, but try a 2 hour drive, multiple train changes once you get to wallan. You leave the G to find out they all running to Flinders, so you have to do ANOTHER train switch and all off a sudden it’s 3am and you aren’t home yet.

If you really want to go you will go.

I think the biggest relevant factor in being inclined to one stadium over the other is your ‘home stadium’.

Docklands can be both a world class stadium and not home.

Likewise the G can be an average stadium and home.

People like you and me don't mind changing trains, but that isn't the same for the vast majority of people. It is what it is.

Yeah this is the point.

And when you are assessing behaviour on a mass scale, it is actually the people for whom the extra 10 minutes each way and associated hassle are enough to prevent them going that is of relevance

Every time i go to the G I usually don't get home until after midnight. They usually only have one line running back through Footscray and it is impossible to physically fit on the carriage at Flinders if you don't leave ten minutes before the siren and walk there, don't even talk about Jolimont.

And it’s just about the same for people going from marvel to bayside. People here forget that we all love footy and will do just about anything to go to games but that’s not how most people are. that’s the way I see it at least.

Crowd tonight 30,098
Demonstrate how that would be possible based on facts?

Shite Essendon historically draw 27,500-29,000 against the Dockers / Power in a normal slot.

We know that the Thursday impact is ~20%. Thst sees the attendance around the figure I’ve called.

I might be wrong but I’m trying to lean on past crowds as a guide.
