Thinking about Zorko going back , and providing run and carry, and skills from Brisbane's back line.

Who do we have, that could do that? (so we are not dependent on Clark)
Struggling to think of many palyers we have who have both speed and skills.

Hayden Young
Reid
Simpson
Frederick

Who else?

Cooper Simpson should be given that role IMO.

Wagner, Clark and Walker all provide pretty good run from defence. I reckon Clark gives just as many metres gained from the backline as Zorko does.

I would argue 'reliable' doesn't sell his capabilities! He is lethal and has the ceiling to become a Bont clone if he continues on this trajectory.

That's a fair call. I was just trying to keep the "lid on" the prowess of one Hayden Young. Perhaps $50 on H. Young for the Brownlow - Norm Smith double would be more realistic.

Interestingly our top “metres gained” last year was Ryan (530m average, 4th in comp), Zorko was 7th in comp with 511, Clark 30th with 412. Some people will think Ryan gets some advantage from his long bombs, but he also had the best “disposal efficiency” in the team 87.8% (4th best in the comp) and second best backman behind Harris Andrews, but Andrews only averages a paltry 160m gained. I think people underestimate how important Ryan is as a distributor and metres gained player in our backline - I was definitely surprised by these stats.

His disposal efficiency is linked to his long bombs though, I think they count any kick over 40m as effective as long as it's not directly marked by the opposition.

Either way it’s helping the team if it doesn’t go to the opposition and maybe he does benefit from what you are saying but we are talking about someone with the 2nd best disposal efficiency in the whole comp for anyone that played more than 9 games. Even if you take account of 50m bombs to space you still have a very good disposal efficiency and huge metres gained

Disposal efficiency is not a useful measure for kicking effectiveness due to the definition of an 'effective disposal'.

Interesting read regarding Shai Bolton and his kicking I came across

Without disagreeing with the argument that disposal efficiency is not a useful measure for kicking effectiveness, that doesn't mean that Ryan being right up there in terms of disposal efficiency is meaningless, if only because he's proving himself more efficient than all the other (predominantly) defenders and wings that are also kicking plenty of long bombs.

More importantly, what that first article shows before anything else is that the long bomb "is often the option of last resort: to limit damage caused by an effective defence when other options are closed". In that scenario, would you rather the ball be in the hands of someone more likely to kick it straight to the oppo? And before anyone pipes up about good players having vision, opening up angles, etc., it's worth noting that the long bomb that the article starts with to show its limited value is one launched by none other than our "most dangerous" midfielder, Hayden Young.

Basically, Ryan cops a lot of flack for being extremely good at doing the kick that no one wants to do, but which good oppo defences regularly force players in his position to do.

On a related point: I took a dive into some of the data on players with the "most threatening kick". Who do you reckon comes in as Freo's most threatening kick (i.e. the player whose kicks go on to produce shots at goal most often relative to historical levels from their kicking situation)?

I would’ve thought Treacy would’ve been our most threatening kick

Omg you telling me King Huskii has been lying all this time 🙄😒

It's not as surprising as I'm sure he was up there last year in assist..pulled off some nice kicks to switch play aswell

Go Away GIF

Or maybe he doesn't suck as much as you like to play that same ol record

Last time I checked I don't think I have the anatomy to be his mum 🙄

Good for you

Just watch his last game he played. I'll re fresh your memory. GWS where he had a few touches and a few turnovers and gave away a coach killing free kick. He was putrid. Then he got dropped.

No I'm not lying that is fact.

Talk him up as much as you like but you're not fooling us

Very good stats for Shai in regard to his kicks leading to a score 53% of the time in 2022. He is probably capable of replicating that at Freo this season.

Between him and Young..... some silver service for our forwards.
