There are a few players to get extremely excited about next season. Lord, Kemp, Moir and Haynes. Yes Pick 3 as well. There are a clutch of players coming in who will make a big difference to our side and what qualities it has. Speed and pressure boosts.

Cooper Lord is a player I don't think will miss games next season. There is something special about this player. He has a really quick onballers brain. You see the tackles he makes, he comes off his man, he comes from a fair way sometimes to make them because he reads where the ball is going and reads the situation so well. We don't have much of that, we have a lot of see ball get ball but we don't have much of this.

What else impresses me is his ability to get the ball out. When he gets hands on it, he's hard to tackle, he breaks tackles, moves through traffic and is accurate and dangerous with his handball release. No panic at all. He then spreads exceptionally well. His kicking is another area that impresses me. Accurate and vision. We have a young player with an extremely good football brain and the body and talents to execute what he sees. I think we underrated him last season. I hope we see it this next season.

Moir is another player who has that footy brain and special skillset that we just don't have and you just can't teach. Watching his later VFL work and AFL work, he just has it. He's not a flash in the pan type, he's the full package. He reads the game. Comes from miles away to make a tackle. Gets to positions at just the right time to get hands on the ball. He doesn't need to run 15 Km/game. He's smart. He will win the ball in the position he is playing and he will be a big impact player. He's got that spark that guys like Fev and Betts had. Create something out of nothing regularly. They can just make thing happen by repeatedly getting to the right spots and having excess skills and anticipation. He will play most games.

Kemp is a player that has been criticised a bit but I think that will go away quickly. A lot to playing him out of position has brought that about. Watching his forward work. We have something there. His pace and endurance is excellent and he will use it to get forward and make good position when we look to move the ball quickly. He should often have space due to Curnow and McKay attracting a lot of attention. His hands above his head are good. His reading of the ball in the air is good and he seems to know where to run to get a kick as a forward. What I also love is that at ground level he has the pace and the skill to make an impact. He really is your modern day prototype 3rd tall forward. Fast, good over head, seems to read the game well, good endurance and good at ground level. I liked his run down and tackle pressure he brought at the end of last year. IMO he will be a great addition to the forward line.

Haynes there is no excitement about but if we can get a couple of seasons close to his best footy then we have a really good addition here. Haynes is a top line defender who many think has been pushed out or is too old. I would like to think that is not the case.

As for Pick 3. This is going to be a gun. A player like Smith or Draper could add so much to our team. So much. There will be pace, class intense natural footballers there for us to take and this will make us better.

Docherty I forget to mention. I don't get how some can't see where he fits into the team. Defence, Midfield as either wing or on the ball. He was even toyed with as a forward last time he was fit. Docherty is a high class player who most definitely fits into our team.

There is a lot to look forward to next season. Hopefully we get Cerra fit. Hopefully we get Motlop going.

If we can add more players forward who are genuine forwards with high level skills and forward brains we will jump. Same in the middle. We go from only 2 marking options forward to 4 or more our ball movement jumps and we become a dangerous forward side. Some pace and tackle pressure in the middle and we don't get blown away when we haven't got the ball, we just stay in it. Better depth and pace in the middle and we do more damage.

We should have high expectations next season.
I like reading your posts - keep 'em coming!

You are right, there's a lot to be excited about - I've just done my best 23 and added a lot of youth, I like the balance of our side now.

Bring on 2025 already!

I think he will surprise you given Haynes whilst at the Giants had to endure so many stomach staph infections so much so that he lost six kilos in one month that stuffed up his digestion and energy output... He was also over prescribed too many anti-inflammatories which gave him bleeding ulcers and worsened his situation with his digestion and output
He has now gone through the natural therapy remedies from around the world and is over these problems according to an interview he did on our Blues website we can Expect the old Nick Haynes of near all Australian Calibre
I hope this is the case..... Jury still out for mine. I feel he will have to perform very well pre season or in early VFL games.
JSOS and Doc in the same boat at this point IMO.

Too late now I know but WHY OH WHY did they not play in our elimination final? :straining::straining::straining::straining::straining:

With the chatter suggesting JSOS to CHB and Kemp as 3rd tall fwd next year, I’m keen to hear peoples thoughts on how that might look on paper, barring injuries of course.

How do we fit all of JSOS, McLovin and Haynes into our starting back 6 along with Weits? Is playing all 4 of them together going too tall? Mitch will most likely miss a couple with niggles (although he’s been relatively healthy these last couple of seasons)

Saad - Weit - Haynes
Newy - JSOS - McLovin Boyd/Cowan/Doc

McGovern and Haynes have superior talent but may miss through load management or injuries. JSOS for me is a smart backup and will likely play a chunk of games.

My projected best 18, with the bench being a mix of the italicised players.

Backline
Newman Haynes Cowan
Saad Weitering McGovern
...Boyd/Doch

Midfield
TDK Hewett Walsh
Cerra Cripps Acres
...Pick 3/O Hollands/Lord/Cottrell

Forwardline
Kemp Charlie E Hollands
Williams Harry Motlop
...Cincotta/Fogarty/Durdin/Moir

Hard to argue with any of that.

Who chops TDK out? H?

I would love to see Pick 3 play off of half-back where they can see the play unfold and use their ball-winning ability in D50 stoppages (all the options in the top 5 are great ball-winners) which would really help us in an area of need

Believe Moir has shown enough to show potency as a genuine mid-sized gun and is quick enough to play as a small too. If he is fit, he slots in in the forward pocket, if he is not fit enough then I'd have Motlop in before Fantasia and finally Durdin.

Docherty further up the ground on the wing is a great position for him, but pushes Hollands out of the side. This is probably my most unfair selection, I do think Ollie has shown a lot, I just don't see where he fits in on balance. Someone who sees the list build better could figure it out.

I've picked Fogarty at the HFF rather than a goalkicking small as his tackling, chase and pressure is necessary to stop running, counter attacking HBF's.

Lord looks a valid midfield rotation, and potentially Cowan could do so too. Their versatility and need to get experience into them puts them in the fold as best 22 players. Hewett is our 2nd best clearance player, he should play every week.

Boyd for mine holds over Hollands

FB: Newman, Haynes, McGovern
HB: Pick 3, Weitering, Saad
C: Acres, Cripps, Docherty

Foll: TDK, Walsh, Cerra

Interchange:

Emergencies:

Notable omissions from consideration:
Cottrell, C Durdin, Silvagni, Fantasia, Young

Despite what has been reported, at this stage, I don't think they know what they want JSOS to do next year.

Pre-season training will reveal a few things, you’d assume.

Moir & Lord should be a “lock” for the first game - the positions should be theirs to lose, not have them lost in the 2s. We know Crippa, Cerra, Hew, Walsh doesn’t work - as much as people want it to, it failed & got found out.
We know what Hewett can do & he won’t lose that sitting in the twos waiting for injury or poor form.
Our small forwards have been horrible, Moir gets the gig everyday.
We need to improve & grow, not rehash the same team.

George shouldn’t be out of the team, we fire much better when he’s out there. Run him off the pine if needed.

Move Walsh out to the wing, or back to HHF position when/if a change is necessary. Wing preferred for best team results.
Cerra fit (was very good before the hamstring ailments derailed his seasons). Good disposal can improve the side immensely vs leg speed we’re also craving.

Nope, need to evolve & get better.
George is a good player but with him at the CB we are slow - just because he is good doesn’t mean we don’t try to get better.
The mid mix was found out, even when they were all fit they were worked out.

We need to be better, Hewett is a great “break in place of emergency” but if we want to be better we need time into the kids.
George is naturally defensive, Lord showed he can be defensively strong and still be attacking.
Young players need time & support to get better - they don’t just improve in the 2s then get a game in the 1s & magically deliver.

We have the support & talent to give young players the best opportunity to shine, we just have to give them the chance to do so.

I think in many of these teams we look middle aged and slow. Control the ball and we're probably OK but I think we will need to play those with legspeed / tackling pressure and some slower players (JSOS, Haynes) will really be backup only.

B: Boyd, W, Saad
CHB: Newman, McG, Doc
C: Ollie, Cripps, Acres (Binns for some time given A's injury)
HF: Kemp, McKay, Fog
F: Motlop, Charlie, Moir
M: DeK, Cerra, Walsh
IC: Lord, Elijah, Hewett, Pick 3

EDIT: I havent made a spot for Cowan )accidentally), my favourite young player. Probably for Doc as 3rd tall / 3rd man, up & back...

Has there been a more underwhelming “big-money” recruit than Mitch McGovern?
Unfort can be rebutted pretty quickly with a Zac Williams in the same conversation.

Would like to see regular star quality from both as 1st choice starting XVIII in 2025. Impose themselves on games/clutch moments rather than the meek efforts regularly offered up in contests.

Orginal contract, really poor bang for buck with McGovern, much better on last years contract

As far as the midfield improving, that’s a two way street, starts with our best full time mids being all fit and over last years ongoing injuries, as well as the coaching department being more flexible and creative via different combinations, mixing up the rotations for developing others and spreading the load…

It's November now, so time for a revision - wait a minute, there's nothing that needs to be revised until pre-season is done :D

For my best 23, I would like the younger guys to push for best 23 - we need their energy, enthusiasm & speed - mixed with our core group, we have a really potent side.

There are question marks all over these young guys, but we need to give them an opportunity to shine.
Bring on 2025 already!

B: Docherty Silvagni McGovern
HB: OHollands Weitering Saad
C: Acres Cripps Lord
HF: Elijah McKay Williams
F: Moir Curnow Motlop
Foll: TDK Cerra Walsh
Int: Newman Kemp Hewett Wilson #3 (Smith/ FOS/ Draper)

Decisions:
  • Cowan vs Wilson - I went with Wilson, I think his speed will really help us
  • Boyd vs Newman - I love Boyd, but as I have enough young players I need some more wiser heads
  • Durdin vs Motlop - I went with Motlop and hoping for a big year from him. Our forward line needs more potency i.e. every player of being able to kick multiple goals in any given week
  • Haynes vs JSOS - I went for more flexibility with having both JSOS and Kemp in the side
  • Fogarty vs Lord - I hope we've gone pass Fogarty

More of a prediction / what I'd like to happen then a team I'd pick tomorrow.

November Update
B: Newman Weitering McGovern
HB: O.Hollands Haynes Saad
C: Acres Cripps Docherty
HF: E.Hollands McKay FOS/Jagga
F: Motlop Curnow Moir
OB: TDK Walsh Lord
IC: Cowan Cerra Fogarty Kemp

McKay back up ruck. I'd love Lord to be good enough over preseason to replace Hewett (though doubt it will happen). O.Hollands to continue his role at half back as our main rebounder. Kemp forward. Cripps, Walsh, Lord, Cerra main mids with reflief from E.Hollands and pick 3. Kemp forward.
