Gary Ablett wore 35 at Hawthorn
Happy to move on from what I wrote... clearly some took it the wrong way from what I intended.

Yes, Gary wore 35 in 1982 but in 1980 playing for the reserves (my post was based on player numbers relating to the player who represented Hawthorn over both grades, not just players who played seniors) he wore number 36. His brother Kevin had 35 that year.

Anyway, as mentioned earlier, let's move on. If people want to hold superstitions about number 36, please feel free to maintain this belief. I only tried to provide my thoughts on the subject.

Cheers.

Club hasn't mentioned this. May have gone early.
Logical to assume this will be the case. If there are no other existing player moves, the club usually fills the gaps in the order they are drafted, hence Mraz in 21 then Anderson (32?), then Hill/JUH (41/45).

41 & 43 left. No 45 since we delisted Tucker. HH has our last number at 44, but I pretty much agree on the order.Mraz 21, Cody 32 then Hill 41 & JUH 43.

Platten and Rioli say hi!
Any player who is good enough can create a legacy in any number and then it's hard not to associate them with it. But when they're this young and early on in their career it's different.

Watson, Mackenzie and Macdonald all look like single digit players. Though Watson or Macdonald into 22 once Breust retires also feels right.
From memory I think Macdonald chose 31 for some specific reason. Watson said that he choose 34 to be next to Ginnivan.

I could see Macdonald, Watson and Ginnivan all staying in those numbers for 10 years.

And hopefully make those numbers rightfully famous in their own right.
Why should 3, 5, 9 etc have all the greats. I mean ok, 33 is Cyril and that's elite but no names appear in 31 or 34 that make them stand out.
Stewie Dew was in 31 but apart from him there wasn't anyone else of note. Maybe Matt Suckling. 34 had Renouf with a flag but bra-boy wasn't much chop and Mark Graham was one of my dad's favourites but hardly what you'd call legends.

Can AFL players go as high as that? Seems these days they are limited to the list sizes.
I vaguely recall some years ago a player from maybe Geelong having to play in a jumper in the 70+ range because their jumper and their backup jumper both got completely torn off.

But maybe I'm remembering wrong, and they just wanted to play some of the game in a jumper with their age on the back.
