Geee Neale is super impressive. With his exceptional attitude and application, I’m confident he’ll go a long way in this game. Following in Tom’s footsteps is a really tough ask, but I honestly believe he’ll become a top 5 key forward in the competition within the next 3-4 years. Hard work always trumps talent.

Listening to Shannon speak, the one area that impressed was his overall knowledge of what was happening around him on his return back to the club and on the track. In particular, when speaking about with other Geelong players but also with the new draftees, that is so impressive. It seems if Shannon is a 'real observer' about what's happening around him and his surroundings which for such a young man can only be a good thing for him going forward with his future development.

It's pretty exciting how we've managed to put together a group of players coming in to their prime.

If you look at our players by the year they were eligible to be drafted we had a 4 year period from 2012-2015 where we only got 4 role players (O'Connor, Kolo, Mannagh and Atkins). Nowhere near enough to build a team around.

The 2016-2021 draft years are completely different. From there we have:

2016 - Stengle, Zuthrie, J Henry, Close, Bowes

2017 - Miers

2018 - Smith, Mullin

2019 - SDK

2020 - Holmes, O Henry, Neale, Bruhn

2021 - Dempsey, Humphries, Conway, Knevitt

That's 17 players from 6 drafts. If the development continues to be good the rest of this decade should be very exciting.

Outstanding effort by all concerned Footy Smarts: and when taking into consideration the lack of elite draft pics during that period then it's beyond outstanding..... bloody awesome I say !!!

Might just be me.. But i am not too fond of pictures like this standing next to pur club greats holding up the jumper as draft pick 44... I get it for a top ten pick or a high profile recruit but not these low picks... Feels a tad of a mockery
Bit over the top, the kids are top 80 in Australia. All have a chance to be a champion of our club.

Yeah I'm with you. They should just have a pic taken against a white wall until they're worthy.

Ignoring our father & son selections from under previous iterations of those rules, let's look at a few of our draft picks over the years:

  • Cameron Ling, pick 38; 3 x premiership player including premiership captain, Carji medalist in 04 & AA in 07
  • Corey Enright, pick 47; 3 x premiership player, 6 x AA & 2 x Carji medalist in premiership years. Also held the Geelong Cats games played record of 332 until Selwood broke it
  • Josh Hunt, pick 44; 2 x premiership player & a leg on him that many were jealous of
  • Max Rooke, rookie pick 41; 2 x premiership player & often seen as a heart & soul player during our premiership years
  • Shannon Byrnes, rookie pick 40; 2 x premiership player and also earned himself a Rising Star nomination
  • Matthew Stokes, pick 61; 2 x premiership player, selected twice in the Indigenous All-Stars team and also in the Dreamteam

Then there's other later or rookie picks who are still playing & we don't know where their careers will finish:
  • Tom Stewart, pick 40; premiership player, 5 x AA, 2 x Carji medalists, AFLCA Young Player & current VC and still a few years of his career left
  • Mark Blicavs, CatB rookie; premiership player, AA Blazer, 2 x Carji medalist and on the verge of 300 games
  • Jack Henry & Zach Guthrie, both rookie selections in 2016; premiership players & top 3 finishes in the Carji
  • Gryan Miers, pick 57; premiership player, top 3 Carji finish & shown himself to be one of the smartest small forwards around
  • Tom Atkins had forged a solid career after being a rookie selection

Yes, draft picks taken from the 3rd round onwards generally don't have the careers of those taken in the first round but being Geelong fans we've seen more than our fair share of players selected in that range who've not only gone on to forge solid careers, but to become club greats & some even club legends

There's zero reasons for our draftees, regardless of pick they've taken at, to not have their guernsey number reveal photo not taken in front of that wall - it's something for them to aspire to, as one day it may photos from their careers which gets added to the montage

There's nothing embarrassing or mocking by having their photos taken in the area

Good post. Not going to argue with this.

Strange take it’s just a number they will make it their own regardless of the history associated with it

May be a strange take, i am probably just being a tad too pessimistic on this crop.
Haven’t even pulled on the jumper yet and being judged so harshly imo

Like anything not all of them will make it but to mark their papers stamped based on absolutely nothing is extreme imo …when will posters learn to be patient and give the players a few years at least before making a call either way

Mmm, I'm sure that would've worked wonders for the morale of future gun players, in Humphries and Dempsey - and current Premiership players in Blics, Jenry, Zuthrie, Close, O'Connor, Miers, Bews and Atkins, who were all taken with pick 57 or later.

Very strange thinking.

This isn’t the right thread but wondered whether a mod might think of creating a new one based on article today in the Addy.

It ranked Well’s top 40 draft picks. Taking into account the career vs where they were drafted. Very interesting.

Might almost be better if people don’t read it and try and pick the top 10 and see how it matches up

In the meantime anybody who hasn’t read it want to have a crack at who was ranked number 1?

Point taken. Maybe just a knee jerk reaction to a player i an probably drastically underrating next ti portraits of our all time greats.

Not going to get any argument from me on this opinion. probably should just keep those sort of thoughts to myself and put my foot in my mouth.

Hi fpm84,

We are excited to announce that Patrick Dangerfield and Tom Stewart will again lead the Geelong Football Club, with the pair reappointed captain and vice-captain for the 2025 season.

It will be the third successive season that Dangerfield will captain the Cats, after taking over from Joel Selwood following the 2022 Premiership.

Stewart was elevated to vice-captain alongside Dangerfield in 2022, returning to the role for a fourth straight season.

There is a Wells thread somewhere in the ether

Excluding father sons

Selwood - yes pick 7 but we would be a completely different club if we didn't draft him so I would still say #1
Enright
Stewart
Taylor - yes pick 17 but in the context of Egan getting a career ending injury it was a great piece of drafting
Blicavs*
Chapman
Johnson
Ling
Holmes
Dempsey

Not sure if Blicavs counts as drafted or not. Probably some guys we took very late in the draft pre 99 that I am overlooking. Obviously projecting a bit with the last two.

Each to their own…

I just see it as an introduction to the history of a football club they are now a part of. Most kids drafted probably have little idea on the history..probably lucky to know the guy presenting the jumper to them so its a bit of a glimpse into the story they have a chance to add to..

To no real suprise danger is captain again, Stewart vc

On SM-N986B using BigFooty.com mobile app
I guess stability is important but to me Stewart proved this year that he doesn’t really have the temperament for being a captain sadly with his onfiled display when the stress was running high when he was in charge

Personally I hope he learns something from that block of games to improve himself , otherwise I hope there’s a succession plan for captaincy after Danger that doesn’t include Stewart
