Plus I feel Lord will be a very good mid

He’s good, but I am not sure he’d be considered a strong big body midfielder at this point. I am more so referring to players like Lalor or Draper. Give it a few years and I’d say he will be there. Lord is close to there too.

I think Newman is excellent for the role currently. If it doesn’t work, really not much to lose except for switching him back to defence.

Ben is bigger then Draper. We currently have Cripps and Hewett so not sure we need another big bodied mid.

I think Newman inside is just some off season experimentation.

Unsure how much I agree with the first part, but if that’s the case then good.

Perhaps Newman is off season experimentation. Nothing to say either or. He is pretty elite in the backline, but if he transfers that elite ability to the midfield (which would not surprise me at all), he may be used as a dual position player next year.

Fair criticism isn't shit canning imo. Our small forwards have been a massive let down for numerous years now, I think it's fair that they're under the microscope
To be clear, constant bagging of a player who is 2 weeks past his 21st birthday, has had 1 full preseason in his career, missed 2/3 of last year with various injuries and turned up to this pre-season looking in great nick is fair criticism because he is only averaging a goal and 2.4 tackles a game to this point in his career in one of the toughest roles in modern football is “fair criticism”.

The thing we have really missed from the draft this year is a strong big body midfielder.

Newman on the wing works really well for that purpose. When you look at his stats, he is almost elite all around. Transfer that to the midfield and it would be incredible. Otherwise worst that can happen is that he is being top tier in defence again.
Newey the Mongrel is one of my favourite Blues, but isn't he a bit of a tortoise with good game reading skills?
I'd prefer to see Lord in the guts if his pre season running form continues.

I think for a player of Newman's age, experience and ability, there's only so much to be gained by training solely with the backline group. He's got that role pretty much nailed now. Makes plenty of sense to mix things up - both to keep him engaged and improving, and to add strings to his bow that we may or may not have to use....but are nice options to have.

100%.

Yes I think everything I've said about him is fair.

Not against NN lining up on the wing, had our best conversion to marks into fwd50 IIRC. Can kick a goal too (4 goals vs WCE at Marvel).

Agree with building up Lord in the centre square mix. Also see what B.Campo brings to the table.
Cripps - Cerra - Walsh - Hewett - Lord - BC as the mainstays with cameos by 20, 8, 6, 2, 4, 19, 17, 1, 4, 15 or whoever else can have a dip.

Nah, he's pretty slow....

Cerra's a big boy, Walshy ain't small, Hewett's as hard as they come, Cripps ok, he'a lightweight...

Not sure where you're coming from really...

Bit of freshening and changing up. I have no issue throwing him in every so often to mix it up

I hope its a sign of Voss being more flexible with the side and players roles

Burst player without the burst.

Whoever told him to put on that much muscle through his core and legs should never work in club land again.
I refute the supposition that a player with large muscle mass through the legs, and a core strength to support it can necessarily be disadvantaged on the score of pace or even agility. Sure, not going to have “dancing feet”, but straight line speed and ability to change direction to evade oppo players does not need to be compromised.

(First hand experience decades ago)

I have some reservations on Mots, but it more relates to mindset than physical attributes, aside from doing the necessary work to be fit enough for the game and role.

Name another great small forward that has his thick quad like physique?

Only one I can think of was Paul Chapman.

Other than that, the best small forwards are quick off the mark with the agility to avoid tackles. Motlop tends to try and barge through tackles/contact which fails most of the time.

I disagree, I think he has the right attitude, but his body isn't allowing him to execute.
