Thinking moving Ollie to the backline as a running rebounder will in itself improve the situation. He can be and indeed is, a very good kick when he can balance up.

Part of the running /sprint training he's been doing has focused on this issue - keeping balance and stride so he can better adjust for his movement.

Ollie in defence will be exposed by opposition teams. Will be taken to the last line of defence and is not great physically if exposed one on one.
On exposed form he played his best patches of footy there, has a willingness to take the game on and some Simpson-esque desperation when called upon.

Seems entirely premature to be writing him off as a defender

My avatar is the great Peter Bosustow. 😉

Dare I say the only sullying was by the previous incumbent. 😉
Great man Buzz. I had the pleasure of working with him some years ago, I often used to call from home after work given the time difference to Perth and when he cottoned on to this he would start every discussion with asking if my then primary school age daughter was around and if so they'd talk footy for 10-5 minutes before getting the phone back to me. He had obviously been told I was a blues man with a young blues-mad daughter because the first thing he asked me was her name whereupon he produced a copy of his mark of the year and signed it to her personally before we got down to business.

Sad to hear his cancer battles but he's fighting hard.

I haven't written him off. Just we need to be prepared to not leave him isolated in defence. Opposition teams will try and expose it that's all. Our defence especially the latter part of the season really struggled, especially in transition.

In those days in 1981 our regular spot at Princes Park was in the forward pocket between the Heatley Stand and the Pratt Stand - he took the mark of the year and from the side view I had it looked like he was riding an escalator - if the signed photo of the mark of the year is the version of my avatar - then I’m in that photo too.

Of those kicking efficiency stats I’d love to know how many easy ones we miss, reckon that order would change up quite a bit if you took out “risky kicks”

Kicking efficiency is a bit of a crock of sh! te I think. If you kick it 50m down the line to a contest they count that as an efficient kick. It's not about whether you found a teammate or not.

I remember seeing stats all through last season that we were one of the worst at transitioning all the way from defense to attack. Despite having the 2 best marking forwards in the game.

That would be no doubt due to game style but also incompetent kicking.

Kicking efficiency is complicated. Carlton's slow movement forward down the line and high up and under kicking from defence vs Hawthorn/Pies fast ball transition.

These transition plans impact kicking efficiency.

Individually on our players i think we are fine with kicking efficiency but suffer because of out stopage game and forced rush kicks. I do think Voss is building a game based to suit Cripps - our leader and best player. This leads to less efficient kicking stats. The stoppage game leads to less space and time and impacts a lot of our players.

So aside from the impact of our ball movement there are just a few players on our list who are weak on disposal naturally and one of those is Cripps. Every team has a player like Cripps.

Other than that, i think last year our defenders panicked a lot led by Kemp which also impacted our kicking efficiency in 2024. I'm glad he is moving out as his panic was starting to rub off on others. Our 2024 defenders like Kemp, McGovern and Young do panic and dont have the right defender profile/mentality.

Re. Cripps - I think that used to be true. He's actually one of our best kicks into F50 now. Walsh and Kennedy were our worst. Walsh is excellent around the ground but I always think "anyone but him" when he's kicking into F50. It's not just bad - he generally hits an opponent on the chest uncontested. It's horrific.

Note: I love Walshy.

All good, I'll drop the club an email.

"Dear Vossy,

Please be prepared to not have Ollie Hollands playing one-out in the goal square against Jesse Hogan.

Cheers,
Big Footy."

I like all three of them. I personally love Saad/Charlie. I might just get to love TDK if he can burst out in 2025.

Agree with Walshy/Kennedy on kicking. I call out Cripps too because he has the juicy forward attacking mid role but doesnt have any inside 50 vision or great execution. But you cant have it all right. Cripps is great elsewhere like Walsh is.

Tough on Cripps but he has two brownlows and if i look him up vs another great in Pendles, he is put to shame on goal assists. One is a magician at kicking/vision inside 50, the other is a king at clearances.

I'm hoping we get an inside 50 visionary soon. Cerra in 2025 maybe!

Goals assists avg per game for 2024:

Pendles: 0.6
Cripps: 0.5

Im not sure that is putting Cripps to shame. I also don't really think its fair comparing an inside vs an outside mid. But I get your general consensus that our delivery inside 50 is some of the worst in the comp (whether by design or otherwise).

It does seem to be an emphasis area from the training vision I am seeing already the preseason. Fingers crossed it translates! It's scary to think H and Charlie and co. are doing what they do with poor delivery. Imagine if we improve dramatically in that area!!

I'd just like to see our best pre season performing half backs selected first, whether that's Newy, Saad, Cow, Doc, Boyd, Oli or Billy.
It does seem like Voss is trying to find a suitable position for Oli in a area that we have already covered.

He might be the best of the lot...but just give me a great ball deliverer who is also sound defensively and fast.

Ollie still taking forever to get boot to ball in training. Ridiculous he and they can’t sort that most basic of skills out.
This is a real problem when playing high pressure tackling teams. They either get pinged for HTB or HB/kick to nobody.
Carlton better sharpen up and improve their fast Handball and foot passing skills if they want to be Top 4.

You can tell that elite hand and foot passing skills are a high priority at Collingwood ... as is tackling pressure.
Some Carlton players give it 100% whereas too often I see our players can't be stuffed and give half-arsed efforts at best as opponents run away.
