Training 2025 Pre-Season Training - reports, pics etc

There's an old story that during Judd's days at WC he should have given Rowan Jones half his Brownlow medal for all the blocks Jones did for Judd.

Don't think clubs think like that so much any more.
I watched Matt K do that for Crippa last season (2024). I believe that Lord was also doing that in the games he played.
Something that I will be watching for.

Goals assists avg per game for 2024:

Pendles: 0.6
Cripps: 0.5

Im not sure that is putting Cripps to shame. I also don't really think its fair comparing an inside vs an outside mid. But I get your general consensus that our delivery inside 50 is some of the worst in the comp (whether by design or otherwise).

It does seem to be an emphasis area from the training vision I am seeing already the preseason. Fingers crossed it translates! It's scary to think H and Charlie and co. are doing what they do with poor delivery. Imagine if we improve dramatically in that area!!

Pendles is about to turn 37 and you choose to do the comparison on that versus a prime aged Cripps. That is very close to politician like to confuse/muddle the point in one's own clubs favour.

Do a comparison at same age or do a comparison over their career and Pendles doubles the goal assists. And then take into account over his career Pendles has spent time at HB while Cripps has spent his whole career as a midfielder only.

Cripps is an amazing player, a stoppage king, a good leader but he is weak on vision and inside 50 kicking to a target. I would concede he has got better but that isnt saying much.

I don’t give a rats ass what comes from this

Cripps is better than pendles

Pendles is a champion and I couldn’t have more respect for him but Cripps is tough, great hands below his knees and he’s 6ft5. Don’t know how many players like that have come through in anyone’s lifetime let alone mine

Sign M Carroll now. I’ve seen enough in that footage to know he’s a footballer.

Both campos impressing in that footage too. O’Farrell looks a natural footballer - I really like the look of him. Jagga not sighted much but he’ll be there rd 1 no doubt in my mind.

I like all three of them. I personally love Saad/Charlie. I might just get to love TDK if he can burst out in 2025.

Agree with Walshy/Kennedy on kicking. I call out Cripps too because he has the juicy forward attacking mid role but doesnt have any inside 50 vision or great execution. But you cant have it all right. Cripps is great elsewhere like Walsh is.

Tough on Cripps but he has two brownlows and if i look him up vs another great in Pendles, he is put to shame on goal assists. One is a magician at kicking/vision inside 50, the other is a king at clearances.

I'm hoping we get an inside 50 visionary soon. Cerra in 2025 maybe!

Again - that used to be true. Cripps is actually one of our best kicking into f50 now.

Well that is grim if he is one of our best because as a midfielder role he was ranked ranked 140+ for disposal efficiency in 2024, and for the inside 50 kick which leads to goal assists 61st where even Mason Wood and Powell did better than him.

Nothing wrong calling him a dual brownlow medalist and champion player, but we dont have to pretend he is a good at inside 50 kicks and goal assists. He just isnt.

Of course, if we were talking stoppages and clearances that is another thing totoally!

Highlights improve but boy does it look sloppy. Looks like we're going with 'move it as fast as possible at all costs' approach. Will be interesting to see how this goes against real opposition who plan against us.

won a nice contest against DGB towards the end of that footage

From that footage you can already see Jack Ison is going to be a very good player. Has no fear, positioned well, marked and kicked well, as well as, tackling and applying pressure in the forward area.
Who is the No.48 at the end of the video going down after a contest and holding their shoulder?

Yeah Im happy to give him a spot. We dont have anyone young coming through for that 3rd tall defender role, so fills a need too.

I’ve summarised comments and some back and forth

Good start to pre season
Everyone came back in great shape
Big focus on power and explosiveness. Lot of gym work etc not seen by public
Campo twins very impressive
No injuries and everyone progressing
Jack will play defence, Kemp forward, Ollie HB are major changes
Wilson looking very good off HB. Runs hard. Cowan looks to have improved
Lemmey came back with some maturity and working well as a forward. Great battles with Weiters
O'Keefe matching up well in ruck
Jagga a real chance to play midfield round one. Mature beyond years
Williams starring as a forward. Has a real spring in his step. He an Motlop have a great combination
Lord is doing well but is still behind Cripps & Hewett
Cerra looks great
Binns has had an impressive pre season so far and will fight for a wing spot
Nick Haynes fitted in well. Calm and quiet type. Will play round one
O'Farrell is a classy player but nothing of him. Great skills
No decisions on SSP as all are doing well at this stage. White a bit of a favourite with teammates and coaches
Work been on taking game on and encouraging flair and risk
Voss has sat back on a lot of training. Different voices
McGovern Saad Silvagni Cottrell Fantasia Acres Durdin on modfied programs but expected to join full training upon resumption

Just a good solid start to pre season. Next 4 weeks will be about match sims and game style. First pre season game around Aust Day. Will really step it up. Feel as though there could be some surprises for Rd One if some players keep progressing

Not much significant or out of the box but positive signs

Merry Xmas everyone and I wish you all the best in 2025. Could be a big year.

Assuming this drill was 'kick it to a bloke in a different colour shirt' I'd say we're ****ing flying...
Believe it or not good teams actually try to defend at training... Intercepts/turnovers can be seen in either light.

Id much rather see turnovers and intercepts at training than the silky smooth end to end traffic cone drills we used to watch with SPS, Mullet, LoB, Boekhurst, Garlett and all the rest of them.

We looked a million bucks all pre season and then came out and got our arse handed to us every week because none of the players were used to pressure being applied to them by opposition.

Glad to see the Campos going well. I'm a big fan of Bens ball winning ability and from what I've seen both look to have added a yard of pace/agility from their u18s program which is great.

Both looked middling type athletes to the eye in their juniors so I think adding a bit more pop to their athletic profiles will allow them to impact more.

Lucas kicking will always be his 1 wood though, Ben probably make more use of a bit more athleticism in his game.

Thanks Soap.

C.Durdin & Fantasia REALLY need to get their as**s out of the modified group and into full training. Feel like they've been in there their whole career...

I like the look of Mots in the brief snippets of vision that I've noticed, his 2nd and 3rd efforts stand out .
It's like he's realised that talent alone doesn't work at this level.
Zak and Mots are going to be a lively combination next year. Will Durds be able to outwork Fog as the 3rd piece of the puzzle...or maybe Eli/Moir are the answer?

Thanks Soap. Any idea who is in the running to be the 'surprises' for round 1? Also i know you speak about it a lot, our skills and our kicking ability. Any comments on if we have upped our focus on this? In some of the vision we look very sloppy with our skills, especially our kicking.
