Training 2025 Pre-Season

It's not that he's a tall - it's only rucks that take longer - it's that Curtin at this point is roughly where you expect a first-round draftee to be. He's got through year one, got a handful of games (not enough, but still), and had some moments that show he's a serious prospect moving forward.

The expectation next year is he tears up pre-season, converts that start into being a locked-in best 22 player, and puts up AFL average numbers in the bottom half of our lineup alongside showing flashes that he's still a serious prospect.
I don't blame Curtin for his lackluster first season (thanks Nicks) but I expect a top 10 draft pick to come in and perform well immediately. Maybe not completely dominating but not looking out of place. I've seen this happen with plenty of other top draft picks. I mean Max and Soligo weren't even top picks and they looked AFL standard from the start. Don't take this as criticism but I think this slow burn stuff comes from many years of watching a loser side and unconsciously lowering the bar. It's okay to expect more.

Not many 197cm kids come in and dominate year one. And it's a marathon, not a sprint.

Give him time, he's shown enough glimpses so show he'll be something.

I didn't expect him to dominate. I just don't agree that his first season was about par for a top 10 draft pick. I put that on our shitty coaches who played him out of position most of the year.

He can play anywhere, that was part of the problem. Also had an injury interrupted pre season.

He's a 197cm gangly kid, he did just fine

From 2023, Jed Walter got more games but less av disposals, Ethan Reid got less games and less av disposals.

From 2022, Cadman got more games but less av disposals.

From 2021, Gibcus got a full season and 1.5 more disposals per game, Mac Andrew got less games and 2.4 more av disposals. Sam Darcy took 2 years to do what Dan did this year alone.

I think sometimes our expectations exceed reality. These kids did fine once they found their feet.

Well not KPD, every man and his dog could see that, except for our coaching panel, wasted half a season on his development with that crap.
I've never got this KPD point.

The tallest player Dan has played on at AFL level was 191cm first gamer Logan Morris.

At SANFL level, he probably did end up on some of the bigger forwards out of necessity. But these were not exactly AFL quality KPFs. And the fact that he averaged 18 disposals a game (inc 31 v North) suggests that his role wasn't as a stopper. The SANFL best forwards are probably a good test for playing against AFL medium forwards.

Now, I can't say that the Crows coaching staff didn't see a 197cm running defender and think "wow, KPD". If they did, that's not his game. He's a hell of a lot more Nick Blakey than Jacob Weitering.

But he was actually being developed as a half back for the first half of the season (even if accidently so).

Why not ??

It's not exactly a stretch to say a 197cm kid who played a fair bit of junior footy as a key back, could play key back in the AFL

Love the concept that we continually draft rookies who perform fairly well in the KPD roles, and we are desperate for quality midfielders, and have been this way for YEARS so obviously we'd push Curtin into a KPD role, because it's the worst possible outcome.

Very AFC.

Im not saying he wont be a very good midfielder, but the kid is clearly capable of playing multiple roles behind and forward of the ball as well.

We have a pretty good record drafting 1st round KPD's previous to McAsey.....Talia and Lever go alright.

No he wasn't

We were developing him as the deepest tall defender playing on the opposition's stay at home key forwards until there was a public outcry

Then we moved him to HBF and later midfield/forward

Young players need stability while they find their feet and we didn't provide that whatsoever. Seemingly we had a new plan for him every 5 minutes. Pretty dismal effort from our coaching team overall. He showed a few good signs in spite of them, not because of them.

I'm hoping this Brisbane guy has a clue. I suspect he has.

I wonder if he'll be blinded by the reflection of Nicks' head as well though and lose focus in the moment as a result.

It's hard to make a strong point when there is a bright light shining in your eyes. Very distracting.

One soccer club in England has an AI camera set up to live streams their matches

In one game the camera kept mistaking the bald referee's head for the ball and there was just footage of him for the whole game

That's why we can't do video review work at our training sessions

The would be the end of both Matthew Nicks and Mathew Nicholls.

Except these are talls. We drafted Curtin to be a mid, right?
